Sales Aid November 2017 Sanlam Severe Illness benefits What is Movember? Sanlam s Severe Illness benefits are comprehensive, marketable and flexible, but without compromising on our philosophy to always provide proper cover for our clients. Movember is a combination of the Australian-English diminutive word for moustache, namely "mo", and "November", and refers to an annual event happening all over the world. It involves the growing of moustaches during the month of November to raise awareness of men's health issues, such as prostate cancer and testicular cancer. The Movember Foundation runs the Movember charity event, housed at Movember.com. The goal of Movember is to "change the face of men's health." The charity refers to men as Mo Bros and encourages them to get involved. By doing this, Movember aims to increase early cancer detection, diagnosis and effective treatments, and thereby ultimately reduce the number of preventable deaths. Besides annual check-ups, the Movember Foundation encourages men to be aware of a family history of cancer and to adopt a healthier lifestyle. Sanlam 2016 Severe Illness statistics 52% of the severe illness claims admitted for males were for cancer. Of these, 10% were for prostate cancer and 9% for melanoma. 52% claims admitted for cancer 10% prostrate cancer 9% melanoma 78% of the severe illness claims were paid out to men aged 46 years and older. 78% 46 years and older Sanlam is a Licensed Financial Services Provider.
Statistics of prostate cancer incidence in South Africa According to the National Cancer Registry the following numbers of prostate cancer cases in men were histologically diagnosed during 2012: Group 2012 Number of cases Lifetime risk % of all cancers All males :19 18% Asian males 155 1:32 18% Black males :30 24% Coloured males 875 1:12 20% White males :11 15% Prostate cancer risk factors Research shows that men with certain risk factors are more likely to develop prostate cancer. These risk factors include the following: Age over 65 this is the main risk factor for prostate cancer. The older a man gets, the more likely he will develop prostate cancer. This disease is rare in men under 45 years of age. Family history one s risk of prostate cancer is higher if you have a father, brother or son with prostate cancer. Certain prostate changes men with cells called high-grade prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (PIN) may be at increased risk for prostate cancer. Certain genome changes research suggests that the risk for prostate cancer may be linked to specific changes on particular chromosomes. Having a risk factor does not mean that one will develop prostate cancer. Most men with any of the above risk factors will still never develop this disease. Source: Diagnosis of prostate cancer Caught in its early stages whilst still confined to the prostate gland, prostate cancer can be cured. Testing through a combination of a prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood test; digital rectal examination (DRE); and subsequent prostate biopsy; is currently the best available way to detect the presence of cancer. Early detection is the key to better outcomes and a potential cure of prostate cancer. Accordingly, it is recommended that men over age 50 (or 40 with a family history of prostate cancer) should talk to a doctor about testing for prostate cancer using the PSA test and DRE as part of their annual health check-up. It can be life-threatening to wait for symptoms to appear before seeking assessment. Source: 2
The Gleason score The Gleason score is used to help determine how quickly a tumour may grow or spread. It may seem confusing because with the Gleason system (the most common system used), there are both a grade and a score. The Gleason grade uses numbers 1 to 5. A number is assigned to two of the areas of the prostate that have the most cancer (based on biopsy core samples taken). This is because the cancer may look different in each of those two areas. Once those two numbers are determined, they are added together to come up with the Gleason score, which ranges from 2 to 10 What the Gleason score means: If the score is less than 6, the cancer may be considered to be well-differentiated or low-grade cancer. A score of 7 may be considered to be moderately differentiated or intermediate-grade cancer. A score of 8 to 10 may be considered to be poorly differentiated or high-grade cancer Source: Sanlam Severe Illness benefits The need for Severe Illness cover Should your client be diagnosed with a severe illness such as prostate cancer, all their energy will be needed to battle the illness and the last thing they should worry about is their finances. Which is why severe illness products are vital. Unlike income protection policies, medical aids and gap cover products, severe illness products provide cover for the various additional and often unexpected costs of being diagnosed with an illness. Extra costs at a time like this can include: Travelling expenses to treatment centres. Private nursing or alternative treatment not covered by a medical scheme. The cost of a wig, as hair loss is one of the possible side-effects of chemotherapy. Synthetic fibre or human-hair wigs cost between R400 and R4000; with the average cost from R1000 to R2000. Costs for relatives to come visit. Employing additional help to manage children and the home while a client is too ill to do so herself. An unplanned reduction in income if a client decides to delay returning to work in favour of a speedier recovery. The financial setback resulting from a client s decision to reduce working hours following a diagnosis, in an attempt to better manage the stress and fatigue that may come with cancer treatment. A person may also be well enough to work after a severe illness, but may not be insurable for between 3 and 10 years after such an illness. Severe Illness cover can help clients to put some savings in place for such a period of uninsurability. 3
Sanlam Cancer cover Because people are generally more concerned about the risk of cancer than the risk of any other disease, Sanlam offers cancer cover under a cancer-only benefit: the Cancer or Cancer Plus benefit. These benefits can be taken on their own to enable clients to directly address what concerns them most, but this same cancer cover is also offered as part of our Comprehensive Severe Illness or Comprehensive Severe Illness Plus benefits. Proper impact-based cover Sanlam s new Cancer benefit is an impact-based benefit that addresses the need for more affordable cancer cover while still properly covering your client. When designing the benefit we recognised that certain stage I cancers are very aggressive and can have the same significant impact on your client as another stage IV cancer. Unlike the cancer cover provided by competitors tiered benefits (i.e. benefits in the same price range that generally pay lower percentages for lower severities of cancer), our impact-based Cancer benefit does not merely pay according to the stage of the cancer. Instead, our Cancer benefit pays 100% for ALL stages of specified aggressive cancers, to ensure your client is properly covered when it matters most. Specified aggressive cancers: Oesophageal cancer Liver cancer Bile duct cancer Lung cancer Mesotheliom Pancreatic cancer Retroperitoneal cancer Omental cancer Mesenteric cancer Stomach cancer Tongue cancer Hypopharyngeal cancer These cancers have a poor prognosis even in their early stages. They tend to require aggressive initial treatments and immediate changes in lifestyle. Sanlam will therefore always pay 100% for these cancers, even when the more affordable impact-based benefit is selected. Plus benefits For clients who are less concerned about affordability and more concerned with getting the maximum possible payout, we offer our Cancer Plus benefit, which pays 100% for all severity levels of cancer covered by SCIDEP. The same applies to the Comprehensive Severe Illness Plus benefit. 4
Very comprehensive cancer cover Our Cancer and Cancer Plus benefits offer very comprehensive cancer cover and include: Cover for cancer, leukaemia, lymphoma and tumours. Comprehensive cover for early cancer, including cover for early cancer of all internal organs; early skin cancers with skin flap surgery; early prostate cancer; early female cancers. Wide cover for benign brain tumours. Catch-all cancer claim events providing even further peace of mind. The same comprehensive cancer cover is also provided under the Comprehensive Severe Illness and Comprehensive Severe Illness Plus benefits. Proper cover also for prostate cancer When designing our product we have carefully considered our client who is diagnosed with prostate cancer, as well as all the possible needs surrounding proper cover. We have then made sure that our product offering encompasses specific concerns related to prostate cancer. So, other than the general cancer events where prostate cancer is automatically included in all these definitions, we have also included various prostate cancer-specific claim events to the cancer and early-cancer cover provided by our Cancer and Comprehensive Severe Illness benefits. We have again made sure that we provide proper cover where it is needed. SPF368 11/2017 Sanlam is a Licensed Financial Services Provider.
