1 John McCormack was appointed CEO of the Irish Cancer Society in October John joined the Society in 1989 and was formerly Company Secretary and Financial Controller with the Society. John previously worked as an Audit Senior with BDO Simpson Xavier. In 1991, John founded the Irish Charities Tax Reform Group, which has lobbied successfully for the introduction of tax relief on corporate donations. John is a member of the following boards; Health Research Board, Alcohol Action Ireland, ASH Ireland, Medical Research Charities Group and the National Cancer Registry Ireland. John McCormack Irish Cancer Society One of John s key areas of interest is in men s health. In 2006, he led the launch of Action Prostate Cancer (APC) to complement the Society s already hugely successful Action Breast Cancer programme. Since its inception, APC has made great strides in cancer information and support for men. The Prostate Cancer Research Consortium (PCRC) was set up in 2003 with a grant from APC and has led to many research discoveries. In 2011, the Society launched a survey to discover men s experience of prostate cancer and treatment in Ireland. The results of this survey revealed that there is inadequate support and information on treatment and side-effects for men going through a prostate cancer journey. In response to this the Society has launched a prostate cancer patient charter, which is a gold standard approach to patient care. The Society is currently advocating on a number of issues that will ensure men have a more positive prostate cancer journey. John was also instrumental to the success of the Society s work in the area of bowel cancer, one of the most common cancers in Ireland. Following research on people s awareness of bowel cancer, the Society launched Bowel Cancer Awareness Month in April This campaign aimed to break down the stigma around talking about bowel cancer. A key issue for bowel cancer is that of people diagnosed with bowel cancer presented at stage 4. This clearly showed that early detection was a key issue around bowel cancer. In response to this the Society began to advocate for a bowel cancer screening programme. This campaign culminated with the Society offering the government 1million towards the implementation of a national bowel cancer screening programme. The government have committed to rolling out a national cancer screening programme for bowel cancer beginning mid This screening programme will pay for itself in 2-3yrs. Screening will see a 30 reduction in mortality after 4 yrs. John was central to the Society s leadership around the 2006 National Cancer Strategy. When the government launched the strategy it proposed a radically different approach for cancer care in Ireland. The Society supported the strategy, even though it meant making tough decisions, which brought about controversy. The Society also created new services to support patients. The Society launched Care to Drive, a volunteer driving scheme. The Society also took on the administration of Travel2Care, a fund provided by John is leading the delivery of the Irish Cancer Society s strategic targets. These targets currently centre around facilitating and supporting cancer research, eliminating tobacco use and ensuring that every member of the Irish public has access to the information and support they need. John is passionate about the importance of cancer research and the Society has made great strides, not only to fund cancer research but to bring researchers together and facilitate collaboration. John believes that the Society is in a key position to deliver this and are core to establishing research collaborations in Ireland. John is committed the Society s goals around reducing Irelands smoking population and the incidence of lung cancer and deaths that result from that cancer. 29 of the Irish population smoke and the Society is advocating for a government strategy to reduce this MBA from Dublin City University. John is married with three children and lives in Co. Dublin.
