1 BORDET DEPARTMENT RADIATION ONCOLOGY The Radiation Oncology Department has been providing patients with high quality, tailored radiation oncology care for the last 60 years in a multidisciplinary setting using all the equipment available : CT, linear accelerators, brachytherapy, radiosurgery, stereotaxic. The department maintains an active research agenda in close collaboration with other units of the Institute which is organized as an integrated cancer centre. The Department also provides comprehensive training schemes for graduate and undergraduate students. Research axes & Expertise The main area of research is related to the development of new radiation approaches for patients. The main area of expertise is oncology and radiation physic. The unit has 4 linear accelerators providing classical irradiation from 2D, to 4D radiotherapy including IMRT and VMAT (rotational IMRT). An accelerator is in an operating theatre to perform intraoperative radiotherapy. A gammaknife unit allows to do radiosurgery. Furthermore, different brachytherapy techniques are available. This requires to have all the facilities to do the dosimetry and calibration of the different equipment. Application fields Intensity-modulated radiotherapy - VMAT Image-guided radiotherapy Radiosurgery stereotatic ablative RT Brachytherapy Intraoperative radiotherapy / partial breast irradiation Radiation physics 4 D + deep inspiration breath-hold Combined modalities exist with chemotherapy, targeted biological therapies, immunotherapies and surgery. Major projects/partnerships/collaborations New Bordet Partnerships/collaborations with Lille. Partial breast irradiation is a therapeutic area under development, using different approaches. The latest techniques developed rely on intraoperative electron beam irradiation enabling full radiation treatment to be delivered at the time of surgery. Individualised treatment and image-guided radiotherapy. This research aims at individualising treatment not only according to the physical and anatomical aspects of a tumour but also in relation to its radiobiological characteristics (proliferation rate, intrinsic radiosensitivity), i.e. through PET-CT monitoring.
2 The Department comprises 70 staff members who conduct over about 2400 new treatments per year. 6 radiation units and 1 afterloaders are available in this unit. 3 BORDET NUCLEAR MEDICINE AND RADIOTHERAPY The Nuclear Medicine Imaging and Radionuclide Therapy Department is located within the Jules Bordet Institute, a dedicated comprehensive university cancer hospital located in the heart of Brussels, capital of Belgium, and part of the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB). The available diagnostic systems include a PET-CT, a SPECT-CT, and a dual-head SPECT camera. Two dedicated hospital rooms are available for isolation of patients receiving radionuclide therapy. Research axes & Expertise The ongoing research activities mainly focus on the use of PET-CT for molecular imaging in clinical and translational research in oncology. The department is also playing a pioneer role in the development and clinical implementation of new targeted radionuclide treatments in oncology. Particular emphasis is put on the development of companion imaging techniques ensuring accurate patient selection and dosing based on predictive dosimetry models using radiopharmaceuticals mimicking the therapeutic agent s bio-distribution (theranostics). Application fields Current applications Internal radioembolization (SIRT) of liver tumours using Yttrium-90 labelled resin microspheres Radioimmunotherapy of CD20-positive lymphoma with Y-90 rituximab Radium-223 for treatment of osteoblastic bone metastasis in prostate and breast cancer patients Lutetium-177 octreotate for systemic treatment of well or moderately differentiated unresectable and/or metastatic neuroendocrine tumours Major projects/partnerships/collaborations Within the ULB environment the department is closely collaborating with a nearby Cyclotron Unit (Hôpital Erasme, Brussels) and a state of the art small animal imaging facility including micro-pet, -SPECT, -CT and bioluminescence imaging (CMMI, Gosselies). The department is involved in multiple academic and industry driven multicentre trials on the development and validation of molecular imaging biomarkers for assessing and predicting cancer treatment efficacy and patient outcome, mainly in lymphoma, breast and colorectal cancer. In 2012, the department performed more than 3500 SPECT-CT and 5000 PET-CT studies, and about 150 radionuclide treatments. Address: 121 boulevard de Waterloo, BE-1000 Brussels person: Pr Patrick Flamen, Head of the Department, patrick.flamen@bordet.be Phone:
4 INSTITUT BORDET The department of radiation oncology is a training centre for radiation oncologists, radiation physicists and oncologists in the different fields of radiation oncology. It is directly related to the ULB. The Service of Nuclear Medicine, Unit of Lymphology, headed by Prof Dr Pierre Bourgeois, has an expertise in scintigraphic examinations of the lymphatic system as i.e. in the realisation and interpretation of the Sentinel Lymph Nodes technics, the investigations of the Edemas,... Training description Department of Radiation Oncology (DRO) The department allows physicians to be trained in radiation oncology. This requires a 5-year programme including internship, teaching courses at the faculty and at a national level. At the end of the programme, they may obtain the academic and professional title of radiation oncologists. The department of radiation physic may train physicists and engineers in the field of radiation physics with the possibility to perform their final work to obtain the title of radiophysicists. This is done in close collaboration with the faculty of the ULB. Technologists and nurses in training may spend also time within the unit to see the practical aspect of radiation oncology; The degree level at entry depends on the speciality from student to MD Service of Nuclear Medicine (SNM) - Unit of Lymphology The Service and Unit allows physicians, technologists and nurses to be trained in the investigations of the lymphatic system. These trainings are open to interested MD who are non specialist in Nuclear Medicine, such as vascular surgeons, plastic surgeons, angeiologits, phlebologists,... The training is organized as a one week program including: Review of the basis (anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology of the lymphatic system), basis of the lymphoscintigraphic exams, methodologies for each exams and/or for each indication, presentations of normal and abnormal exams with their interpretations in relation with the clinical data, discussions of the therapeutic and prognostic implications of these exams, presentation of other technical investigations of the lymphatic system with discussion of their advantages, drawbacks and limitations. Technologists and nurses in training may spend also time within the unit to see the practical aspects of these exams. These departments are part of the Institut Bordet build in the 30 s. It gathers more than 45 scientists and MD. Each year > 10 MD and/or physicists are trained in the DRO while the SNM organizes at least one training each year.
