Established program of research/ Impact on the field My research has focused on two subjects in modern British history, alcohol and progressivism. My last three books as well as two of my articles have stressed the role of
3 progresslvlsm as a key catalyst for British social reform in the years My publications portray gender, age cohort, class and geography as key factors that shaped drinking behaviour since the early twentieth century. Overall, I have published nearly 1000 pages in peer-reviewed journals and with peer-reviewed academic book publishers since promotion to full professor in July, 1998, primarily in presses with international distribution. Manchester University Press, the third largest university press in the UK, is publishing my fifth book, now in press. I have explored diverse dimensions of drinking alcohol, from public anxiety over maternal drinking and women's drinking habits to changes in the physical layout of drink premises and drinking as a factor shaping national identity. Related to this interest has been progressivism, the movement in the late nineteenth century US which expanded into an Anglo-American cultural exchange. In three books, I have linked alcohol consumption with brewers' efforts to influence drinking habits. Most recently, I have extended my interest in the symbiotic Anglo American relationship with a projected sixth book in which I shall investigate how the US roadhouse crossed the Atlantic and, after being sanitized, became transplanted in interwar England. For this current project, I am co-operating with a geographer, Dr. John Law, making this a truly Anglo-American exchange. Northern Illinois University Press has awarded us a book contract (See Supporting Material). My impact in these fields can be measured in different ways: the quality of my three books, book reviews and publishers of my books and my articles. I have published books with Palgrave Macmillan and Manchester University Press/Palgrave Macmillan, two international presses with established reputations as publishers of first-rate British history. Manchester University Press is the third largest university press in the UK. Northern Illinois University Press is a small but distinguished press specializing in the history of alcohol. Likewise, my articles have appeared in some of the most respected journals: Business History, Sport History, Cultural and Social History in Britain, and Historie sociale/social History in North American. These books and articles, together with international conferences, invitations to write book reviews in the leading journals, election as President of the Alcohol and Drugs History Society, and member of the Advisory Board of the Drugs and Alcohol series, all underline the importance of my work.
