1 Adriana Castillo PREGNANT APENDECTOMY When I lived in Colombia sixteen years ago, I was in the hospital when I was four months pregnant because I had diarrhea, a fever, a stomachache, and I was vomiting. So I went to the hospital with my husband. After many tests and examinations the doctor said, You have appendicitis and you need surgery right now. My husband and I were scared. We wanted our baby but I needed to be stay safe too. After two hours we decided I should have surgery.

2 That Sunday early in the morning, I had an appendectomy with only local anesthesia. Surgery was delayed two hours, but during surgery the doctor told me, Everything is fine. My husband and I were worried and we wanted to see that the baby was fine. Then the doctor told us that he would need to take an ultrasound to show that all was well. Two days later, they took my baby s ultrasound and everything was fine. Also in this ultrasound we saw that our baby was a boy. Today my son is sixteen years old, and I m very good. Thank you, God! 3 Phuong Chau MY TERRIBLE DAY In 2001, I had an accident. I was riding my motorcycle on the street, when I saw a truck coming too fast. I stopped and waited for the truck to stop, but the truck didn t stop. I rode my motorcycle fast, but it was too late the truck hit me and my motorcycle. I fell down. My foot started bleeding and it was burned. My neighbors saw me fall down and asked me, Are you OK? I was so scared. I didn t know what happened to me.

4 They went to my home and told my sister and my brother. When my sister and brother came, I was crying. I said, If I m not lucky, I ll never see my family again. They took me home. My two legs were very painful. My sister put some medicine on my legs. It hurt a lot. After a couple days, my leg felt better, but I couldn t ride my motorcycle for one month. My brother brought my motorcycle to get fixed. After one month, I could ride my motorcycle, and my foot didn t hurt. But it has a scar. My father didn t want me to go out the day my accident happened because at this time of day a lot trucks came from the small town to the city. But I had something to do, so I rode my motorcycle and got in an accident. This was a terrible night for me, and the next year, my father died. I was so sad when I remembered what my father my said. But in the results we couldn't see any problem. After that, the doctor sent me to do a CT scan. The morning I went to the CT scan, I had to go to the toilet. My stomach hurt a lot. After one minute I felt better but I saw a small stone in the toilet. Later I went to the CT scan. They saw something like cancer in my bladder. After two days the clinic called and said, "You need to come to the clinic as soon as possible."

8 I went to the clinic. The doctor looked very worried and he told me I had cancer in the bladder. I was surprised. A little bit later, I told him before I went to the CT scan I saw a stone. Maybe the stone injured my bladder. But he was still worried. He sent me for another test. After two weeks, the results came back. The doctor gave me good news. He said everything was normal. I told him I fell down and hurt my left foot. My father took me to the hospital immediately. The doctor used disinfectant for my bleeding. He told my father not to worry. After a few days, my foot felt better. Now my foot is scarred.

She fainted before she finished speaking. I was scared. The restaurant manager and some other people came and helped. Somebody called 911. I pressed between her nose and mouth. Some people rubbed her hands. After less than a minute, she woke up.

12 After about five minutes, an ambulance came. They took her to the hospital. In the emergency room, the doctor looked at my daughter and asked me a lot of questions. After one hour, the doctor told me there was no problem and told me not to worry. My daughter fainted because she was too hungry and the weather was too hot. She had heatstroke. 16 The doctor helped me to fix up the bones. I was crying because it was very painful. After the doctor applied the medicine to my hand, it still hurt. About one month later my hand became better. My mom and father were scared. My father went down and started the car, and my mom held me and put

20 some ice on my butt, then we went to the hospital. The doctor gave my mom some bandages and some advice. Then we went home. I could not sleep this night. I was so tired and my burn still hurt. My mom put a bandage on my butt, and comforted me. After a couple of days, I felt better. I was so lucky, because I don t have a scar. But after this time, I m always careful about hot water. After I finished the I.V., I went back to school in the afternoon. My teacher and classmates asked me, Are you OK? When the people asked me that, I felt very good.

They gave me a lot of tests, like a blood test and an X-ray, CT-scans and an ultrasound. The next morning, the doctor told me I had a kidney

24 stone and gave me a prescription drug. Then we went the pharmacy, and I took a lot of medicine for about a month. But I didn t want to take a lot of medicine, so my friend helped me to call her uncle in Beijing. He is a famous doctor of traditional Chinese medicine. He told me to take some traditional Chinese medicine which could heal me in one week. I had a week of traditional Chinese medicine and got healed. Amazing cure! I exclaimed. TRUE OR FALSE? 1. I saw the doctor. She asked, What s the matter? I said, My stomach hurts. She touched it a few times and gave me some medicine. She told me to drink more water and don t eat junk food. I knew that he was stitching up my scalp. The man in white clothes scolded me. I cried and kicked. My mother held me tightly. I couldn t move. After half an hour, my mom said, Yes, we will go home. Many people ran rapidly and jumped into the swimming pool. After two minutes, my son was saved from the deep end of the pool. He couldn t breathe at that time. A hotel employee gave him CPR. After a while he started breathing but he didn t wake up. We took an ambulance to the hospital. He stayed in the emergency room for eighteen hours. I stayed outside to cry for eighteen hours.
