I stood on the platform with the rest of the astronauts, holding my helmet under one arm. This is a long way from playing tennis, I thought to myself. I waved to the crowd below. Hundreds of people had come to say goodbye as we blasted off on the space shuttle Challenger. For me it was a dream finally come true. I had wanted to play professional tennis when I was younger.
