1 2011 BASES ANNUAL STUDENT CONFERENCE INTEGRATIONS AND INNOVATIONS: AN INTERDISCIPLINARY APPROACHTO SPORT AND EXERCISE SCIENCE Speaker profiles Keynote speakers Dr Ken van Someren, English Institute of Sport Ken is the Director of Sport Sciences at the English Institute of Sport. He is a BASES Fellow and has held HPSA (Physiology) since 2006; he has held positions on the Division of Sport and Performance committee, which he chaired from An ex-intentional kayaker himself, Ken has supported the GB Flatwater Canoe & Kayak Team through three Olympic cycles and has worked with a wide range of other individual and team sports. Ken s research interests include exercise-induced muscle damage and recovery strategies; physiological determinants of sports performance; and methodological issues in physiological assessment areas in which he has published widely in peer-reviewed journals. He holds honorary research positions at Kingston University and St Mary s University College. Dr David Stensel, Loughborough University David completed a BA (Hons) degree (Sport Studies and History, 1986) and a PGCE (Physical Education and History, 1987) at West London Institute of Higher Education (now Brunel University) and then studied at Loughborough University where he obtained his MSc (Physical Education and Sport Science, 1988) and PhD (Exercise Physiology, 1993) degrees. David worked in Singapore for six years (1993 to 19 99) as a Lecturer in the School of Physical Education at Nanyang Technological University before returning to the UK in September 1999 to take up an academic position in what is now the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences at Loughborough University. David teaches and researches within the area of exercise physiology. His primary interest concerns the relationship between physical activity and health. He is co-author (with Professor Adrianne Hardman) of the textbook Physical Activity and Health: The Evidence Explained, which is now in its second edition. David's research is focused in two main areas: 1) the influence of exercise on cardiovascular disease risk factors; 2) exercise and appetite regulation. David has obtained research funding from the British Heart Foundation, the Ramblers' Association, Pfizer Global Pharmaceuticals and Walk England.
2 Professor Scott Fleming, University of Wales Institute, Cardiff Scott Fleming is Professor of Sport and Leisure Studies at the Cardiff School of Sport, UWIC, where he is the school s Director of Research. He is also an Honorary Research Fellow at the Asia- Pacific Centre for the Study and Training of Leisure, Zhejiang University, China, and an Associate Member of the Centre for Children and Young People s Health and Well-Being, Swansea University. A former Chair of the Leisure Studies Association, Scott s research interests are concerned broadly with the sociology of physical education, sport and leisure cultures, though some of his most recent work has been more interdisciplinary (embracing history, philosophy and psychology). He has a longstanding interest in research ethics and has co-edited two collections of essays, Ethics, Sport and Leisure: Crises and Critiques with Alan Tomlinson [1997], and Ethical Issues in Leisure Research with Fiona Jordan [2006]. Scott is one of three Managing Co-Editors for Leisure Studies and serves on the Editorial Board of Sociological Research Online. He is also a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the Journal of Hospitality, Leisure, Sport and Tourism Education. His other published work includes New Leisure Environments: Media, Technology and Sport (with Ian Jones [2003]) and Masculinities: Leisure Identities, Cultures and Consumption (with John Horne [2000]). Dr Brett Smith, Loughborough University Brett Smith, PhD is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Sport, Exercise & Health Science at the Loughborough University, UK. His theoretical and empirical research interests concern the psycho-social dimensions of disability, health, and wellbeing; narrative inquiry; and the development of qualitative research methods and methodologies. His research has been disseminated through numerous journal articles, invited keynote presentations, talks at national and international rehabilitation hospitals, policy events, and conventions with user-group organisations. Brett serves on several editorial boards and is Associate editor of Psychology of Sport & Exercise. He is Editor of the journal Qualitative Research in Sport & Exercise and co-editor (with Cassandra Phoenix) of the forthcoming book, The world of physical culture in sport and exercise: Visual methods for qualitative research (London: Routledge). Dr Truls Rastaad, Norwegian School of Sport Sciences Truls currently holds the position of Associate Professor in Exercise Physiology at the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences, Oslo. Following the completion of his PhD on the recovery processes and adaptations to high volume strength training, Truls has continued to publish widely in the areas of muscle physiology, adaptations to training, sports nutrition and the physiology of team sports; namely soccer and handball. He is also a consultant at the Norwegian Olympic training centre.
3 Dr Martin Roderick, University of Durham Martin spent several years at the University of Leicester before moving to Durham University in 2004, where he is a Lecturer of Sociology. His main teaching responsibilities at Durham relate to the sociology stream in years 1 and 2 of the BA Sport programme. Martin completed his Ph.D. examining the careers of professional footballers in 2003, which was subsequently published as a book: The work of professional football; A labour of love? He has been involved in research focusing specifically on the management of injuries in professional football. His current research interests concern the issue of risk, pain and injury in physical activity; the problems associated with work and careers in professional sport; and the inter-connections among family life, issues of work-life balance and athletic careers. With colleague, Dr Emma Poulton, he has recently edited a collection of essays which focus on 'Sport in Film'. Martin has presented research papers recently at the 2009 World Congress of the Sociology of Sport; the 3rd International Qualitative Conference in Sport and Exercise; and was a Keynote speaker at the 2009 BASES Student conference, where he spoke on the topic of sport science technology and its impact on elite athletes. Invited symposia speakers Dr Jacky Forsyth, Staffordshire University Jacky completed her PhD from John Moores University, where she investigated the effects of the menstrual cycle and circadian rhythms on exercise performance. Jacky is a senior lecturer at Staffordshire University, and is currently engaged in research projects on: contraception, bone health and physical activity; exercise and postnatal depression; sports (rowing) performance; and student employability in sport and exercise. Jacky is also an ex-international rower. Dr Caroline Dodd-Reynolds, Northumbria University Dr Caroline Dodd-Reynolds is a Senior Lecturer in Exercise and Health Nutrition at Northumbria University. Research focuses on paediatric energy and appetite regulation, with initial work suggesting a loose coupling between food intake and energy expenditure over the short-term in young females. Caroline is involved in a number of external consultancy projects evaluating physical activity-related intervention work taking place within the North East of England. Before moving to the North East, Caroline spent 4 years conducting her PhD research at the Children's Health and Exercise Research Centre, University of Exeter. Dr Joanna Scurr, University of Portsmouth Dr Joanna Scurr is a Reader in biomechanics and the Biomechanics Division Leader in the Department of Sport and Exercise Science at the University of Portsmouth. Joanna completed her undergraduate and postgraduate degrees at the University of Chichester (1999) and is BASES accredited for science support (biomechanics). Joanna s research interests are in
4 the area of breast health and she established a Research Group in Breast Health in This research group consists of five members, including research assistants and PhD students. This research group has three main functions; applied research, fundamental research and clinical support. Their research in this area began in 2005 with a major research project on the biomechanics of the breast and the effectiveness of sports bras at reducing breast motion. Their research in this area has grown, to now include collaborations with organisations such as the NHS. The Research Group in Breast Health has achieved over 350,000 worth of collaborative funding, journal publications, national and international research presentations and international media coverage, including television and radio. Professor Ken Green, University of Chester Ken Green is currently Professor of Applied Sociology of Sport at the University of Chester, where he has been since Prior to joining the University of Chester, Ken spent eight years teaching PE in the South East, the Midlands and the North West of England, including one year in teacher education. Ken is currently editor of the European Physical Education Review and Professor II in Physical Education at the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences. His research interests focus primarily on the Sociology of Physical Education. Professor Alan Nevill, University of Wolverhampton Alan Nevill is the Research Professor in the School of Sport, Performing Arts and Leisure, University of Wolverhampton (specialization in biostatistics applied to health, sport and exercise sciences). He is also the Editor in Chief of the Journal of Sports Sciences. His main research interests involve investigating, analysing and modelling data recorded in sport (in particular association football), exercise and health sciences. He studied for his BSc (Hons) in Mathematics at Loughborough University, completed his PhD in Statistics at the University of Bradford. He is Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society and, in the past, has been Chair of the local Group of the Royal Statistical Society in Birmingham and Merseyside. Alan has recently been a consultant statistician to Chelsea, Wolverhampton and Leicester City Football Clubs. Dr David Tod, University of Aberystwyth David received his Bachelor and Master of Physical Education from the University of Otago, New Zealand, and then worked for several years at the Waikato Institute of Technology, New Zealand, as a lecturer and consultant. David has consulted for a wide variety of sport teams and athletes from club to international level. He began his PhD, entitled Service-Delivery Expertise in Student Sport Psychologists at Victoria University, Australia in 2002, which he completed in February He began his post at The University of Wales, Aberystwyth in April David s rese arch interests revolve around professional practice and development in sport and exercise psychology, mental preparation for performance, psychological aspects of strength and conditioning.
5 Mr Vinny Webb, Rugby Football League Vinny has been involved in rugby league as a player and coach for over 30 years. Following a successful playing career, which included representing BARLA and a stint as a professional player with Rochdale Hornets, Vinny started his coaching career with the hugely successful Woolston Rovers. Vinny s coaching credits include several years as head coach of the Great Britain Students side, which included tours of Australia (1999, 2003) and New Zealand (2000), guiding the BARLA national team to glory in the Emerging Nations Tournament, Georgia national rugby league team coach and recently acting as coaching advisor on the England Women s tour to New Zealand. Vinny has also held the position of scholarship manager for Warrington Wolves, where he was responsible for developing players and coaches in the club s junior set-up. Vinny is currently Head of Coach Education for the Rugby Football League (RFL), and in December 2009 was awarded the prestigious UK Coaching Award for Coach Educator of the Year for the individual who had made a significant contribution to the development of coaching in the UK through delivery of effective education programmes. Dave Rotherham, Rugby Football League Dave Rotherham is currently National Player Development Manager for The Rugby Football League. His role is to work with professional clubs to ensure that the multidisciplinary approach to player development is delivered throughout their programmes in order to produce talented athletes who will go on and represent England. Prior to this Dave has 20 years of teaching and coaching experience. On graduating from Brunel University in 1990 he taught Physical Education at two inner London Comprehensive Schools. In 1995, upon retirement from playing professional rugby league, Dave began his coaching career. He has coached at all levels of the game; as an assistant head coach in Super League with London Broncos and St Helens, Championship head coach with both Whitehaven and Workington Town and assistant head coach to the Scotland national team.
