Characterization of the territory and delimitation of areas, where wild boar population is fairly constant (Tot No. 32 Areas) 8
Factors for the characterization of Areas we considered: fruit bearing chestnut woods, agroforestry areas in general, broad leaved and mixed conifer broad leaved woods, Mediterranean bush and cork oak plantations. 9
Estimated population of wild swine The presence of wild boar in Sardinia is estimated around animals: an average of 4 6 animals per kmq of land useful. 10

Situation 2011 During 2011, 3 outbreaks were detected only in domestic pig in the Municipality of Bono (District of Sassari): BONO: primary outbreak on (clinical symptoms; PCR e MALMQUIST TEST +); BONO: secondary outbreak on (clinical symptoms; PCR +; IFD +); BONO: secondary outbreak on (clinical symptoms; PCR +) All the secondary outbreaks were within the protection zone and were related to the first. 18

Multi Seropositives in 2011 Orgosolo (District of Nuoro): two pigs sero+ during repeated checks on the farm (after 21 days) NO positive virological test. Orune (District of Nuoro), two pigs sero+ during repeated checks on the farm (after 21 days) NO positive virological test. In these two cases for precaution all herd s pigs were killed. 20
Simple seropositives In 2011 two animals were detected seropositives without other signs of disease and virological laboratory tests were negative in: the Municipality of Dorgali (District of Nuoro); the Municipality of Arborea (District of Oristano). 21

ASFV SITUATION The epidemiological surveillance regularly performed didn t detect more positives No further spread of the disease has been detected around these last outbreaks The number of the detected outbreaks reflects the epidemiological situation of past years and confirms the favourable trend of the last five years
SITUATION IN DOMESTIC PIGS There is still a viral reservoir of ASF in the population of pigs on high risk area. Within this population, the virus is present endemically, and periodic epidemic peaks occur. The sporadic occurrence of primary outbreaks outside the high risk area, usually is followed by rapid eradication of the outbreaks without consequence in terms of viral persistence in the territory, if there aren t the typical factors of high risk area. So, in these case, we have to ensure timely and accurate measures, that get to effective extinction of the outbreak. 24
SITUATION IN WILD BOAR PIGS The situation in the wild boars, especially outside the high risk zone, is greatly improved: large infected areas were revoked for the absence of positive virological samples in wild boar. Only in the Centre Sardinia of Montarbu, Aritzo, Urzulei Baunei and Orgosolo Dorgali are confirmed the measures of the infected area. In the Infected Area of Orgosolo Dorgali is ongoing a program in order to increase veterinary checks on domestic pig populations reared in the wild. 25
CONCLUSIONS the seropositivity found in recent years occurs exclusively during: slaughter controls in familiar herd in areas of restriction. No seropositivity has been detected in slaughterhouse; This last finding demonstrates a high and historically validated health security of the pigs intended for the commercial circuit. 26
