Flu Vaccine School Immunisation Information Pack
All children in Reception up to and including Year 5 will be offered the flu vaccine in school. (Reception up to age18 in Special Schools) The School Age Immunisation Service cover the whole of Derbyshire, from Glossop down to Swadlincote including Derby City. Our service is delivered from: *All Infant, Junior, Primary and Special Schools *Community Clinics (Where required) As a service we are keen to build relationships with all schools to ensure the children have the opportunity to receive this vaccine.
The flu vaccine is in the form of a nasal spray. It is made up of specially weakened, whole, live viruses. It has been changed so it cannot reproduce in the lungs.the nasal spray does not cause Flu.
The initial results from using the Flu nasal spray vaccine are as follows
The vaccine will protect the children, their families and the wider communities (including teaching staff) from getting Flu. This will mean better attendance rates throughout the community for pupils, parent/carers and workers.
Some concerns may be raised over religious belief's and consenting to the vaccine. Below are statements provided from The World Health Organisation and Public Health England: For observant Muslims WHO Letter Reports On Islamic Legal Scholars' Verdict on the Medicinal Use Of Gelatine Derived From Pork Products From: IAC EXPRESS Issue Number 400 July 21, 2003 A letter written in July 2001 by the Regional Office of the World Health Organization (WHO) for the Eastern Mediterranean reported on the findings of more than one hundred Islamic legal scholars who met to clarify Islamic purity laws. The scholars met in 1995 at a seminar convened by the Islamic Organization for Medical Sciences on the topic "The Judicially Prohibited and Impure Substances in Foodstuff and Drugs." The topic is of interest to the immunisation community because some vaccines contain pork gelatine. In Islamic law, pork and pork products are impure, and observant Muslims do not consume them. Quoting from a statement issued by the scholars, the letter states the following: "The seminar issued a number of recommendations stipulating that 'Transformation which means the conversion of a substance into another substance different in characteristics, changes substances that are judicially impure... into pure substances and changes substances that are prohibited into lawful and permissible substances'." Consequently, the scholars determined that the transformation of pork products into gelatine alters them sufficiently to make it permissible for observant Muslims to receive vaccines containing pork gelatine and to take medicine packaged in gelatine capsules.
The following statements from representatives of the Jewish community may help parents reach a decision about having their child vaccinated: Rabbi Abraham Adler from the Kashrus and Medicines Information Service, said: It should be noted that according to Jewish laws, there is no problem with porcine or other animal derived ingredients in non-oral products. This includes vaccines, including those administered via the nose, injection, suppositories, creams and ointments. PHE 2014
In readiness for the Flu sessions may we ask that you: Distribute the consent forms and remind parents to return in a timely manner Highlight the date of our visit on the school website, newsletter and via posters displayed in school. On the day of vaccination the session will run smoothly if as a school you are able to provide the following- A member of staff to assist with organising the pupils on the day of immunisations and a runner to collect children if a large school. A room to accommodate the staff and children. A waiting area or corridor where the pupils can be prepared for the vaccine. Access to hand washing facilities. Access to school wi- fi to access the pupils child health records. Car parking facilities if possible, or at least a provision to drop off equipment required for session. All the above are recommendation s only, we are aware not all may be possible.
After the vaccination- The children will be given a sticker or stamp on their hand. Children will be able to return to their classrooms after vaccination to avoid disruption to their learning. Possible side effects- Blocked/runny nose Loss of appetite Sore muscles Headache Fever Feeling Unwell however these symptoms are rare. ( An information sheet will be ed to you that you can share with parents )
If you feel as a school you are unable to use this pack to educate the children about the Flu virus and why we vaccinate, we are happy to come and speak to the children in September before the Flu programme begins. NB- This is dependent upon staff availability. If you have any further questions or require information please contact the Teams- Repton Health Centre Askew Grove Repton DE65 6SH Clay Cross Hospital Market Street Clay Cross S45 9NZ (01246)

To obtain extra consent forms please follow this link.. For more information about the vaccine or to direct parentshttp:// If you are able to it would be helpful to use the following link to show the children a friendly cartoon sequence and the following four slides :
Flu is a virus that can give you a very bad cold and soon a team of nurses will be visiting the school to give you a Flu Spray. The Flu Spray is a special medicine that will help stop you or anyone close to you becoming poorly.
These are the uniforms that the nurses will wear when they come to school. The nurses will give you a piece of paper if a grown up has said they want you to have the spray. The nurse will need your piece of paper and will then ask you your name and how old you are.
The special medicine is given by squirting in both sides of your nose It does not hurt but it can be tickly, cold and a little wet. The nurses will give you a tissue to catch any drips.
After your spray you will be given a sticker or stamp on your hand as you have become a Flu Fighter!!
