12 Glove Use If it is wet and it is not yours, wear gloves! Change contaminated gloves Hands can become contaminated due to tiny punctures in the glove material or during glove removal WEARING GLOVES DOES NOT REPLACE HAND HYGIENE!
13 Standard Precautions Most essential precaution Applies to ALL patients Proper hand hygiene Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Gloves, gown, mask, protective eyewear, and face shield to prevent direct contact with patients blood or body fluids Bloodborne pathogens: Hepatitis B & C and HIV
14 Transmission-Based Isolation Contact, Droplet, and Airborne Private rooms or cohort patients with same infectious agent Patient should only leave room when necessary Notify receiving unit if patient is going for a procedure SBAR report inform isolation status, infectious organism, infected site Terminal cleaning upon discharge, post-procedural
15 Contact Isolation Precautions Transmitted through direct or indirect contact Strict hand hygiene Wear gloves, gown when entering the room During patient transport, contain environment Designate equipment use or disinfect thoroughly Examples: C difficile, Lice (Pediculosis), Impetigo, Major decubitus ulcers, MDROs (MRSA, VRE, Acinetobacter baumannii, etc), RSV, Scabies, etc
16 Droplet Isolation Precautions Transmitted through direct contact with respiratory droplets or indirect contact with recently contaminated surfaces/objects Wear a surgical mask when entering the room and gown/eye protection when working within 3 feet of patient During transport, patient wears a surgical mask Examples: Epiglottitis, German measles (rubella), Influenza, Mycoplasma pneumonia, Mumps, Neisseria meningitidis, Pertussis, etc
17 Airborne Isolation Precautions Transmitted by airborne droplet nuclei Place patient in negative pressure room. The double doors must remain closed at ALL TIMES except when entering and exiting the room Wear N95 respirator when entering the room During transport, patient wears a surgical mask Examples: Tuberculosis, Chickenpox (varicella), Measles, Disseminated Herpes zoster (varicella-zoster), SARS, etc
