2 Introduction of the events: Filial Piety Report press release The Filial Piety Report is released on December 18th 2015, by Dr. XinQi Dong s PINE study team and the community and academic partners. Aimed to extend understanding of Chinese American family s wellbeings, especially caregiving and intergenerational relationships, 548 adult children were interviewed during the past two years. It illuminates the growing issue of caregivers psychological distress, caregiving burden, and intergenerational conflict. With filial piety being valued in traditional Chinese culture, caregiving burden in Chinese adult children are higher than other ethnic groups. More than half of the Chinese adult children helped their parents in performing daily activities necessary for living independently, nearly 3 in 4 experienced stress and burden in caring for their parents. At the same time, caregiving stress leads to family conflict and psychological issues. Over half of the Chinese adult children reported symptoms of anxiety, and 44% reported experiencing depressive symptoms. Approximately 87% of adult children agreed that community should share a great amount of responsibilities in taking care of older adults. Through the Filial Piety Report, our community has voiced our needs through the lens of caregivers. 3 春暉報告發佈 聚焦兩代家庭關係 繼松年報告之後 董新奇醫 生的松年研究團隊及合作夥伴 于 12 月 18 日發佈了春暉報告 針對華裔家庭贍老挑戰和兩代 關係 研究團隊在兩年時間內 採訪了 548 位成年子女 這份 報告反應了美國華裔老人及其 成年子女的健康 家庭照顧和 衝突等議題 在崇尚孝道的華裔社群中 華裔成年子女承擔了比其他種 族更高的老人照顧負擔 一半 以上的華裔成年子女為父母提 供日常協作 3/4 的受訪者有 贍老的負擔 同時 贍養老人 的壓力也引發了一系列家庭爭 端及雙方的心理問題 超過一 半的受訪者有焦慮症狀 另有 44% 的受訪者有抑鬱症狀 近 87% 的受訪者認為社會應該幫 他們分擔大部分照顧老人的責 任 成年子女通過這份報告表達 了訴求 我們希望 這份報告 能進一步的引導積極行動來為 華裔社區造福 查看報告全文可訪問 chinesehealthyaging.org/ pietyreports.html

4 Health Fair in CASL On Jan.25th, 2016, Dr. Xinqi Dong and his PINE study team, together with Chinese American Service League, Mercy Hospital of Chicago Center and Northwestern Medicine held a Health Fair for the Chinese community. Blood pressure check, glucose check and cholesterol check were provided, along with the health insurance information, health screening guidelines and health resources referral. Nearly one hundred Chinese residents attended the Health Fair. Please follow our WeChat for future events. 5 Feature on a Chinese Older adult 聚焦華裔老人 彭貞 書法家 北京書畫院院士 中華字經的作者 彭貞先生生于台灣 1997 年移民芝加哥 至今 受父親的影響 自 8 歲開始練習 書法 他集顔 黃 歐 趙 柳之精華 結 合 自 己 獨 特 的 書 法 壹 體 自 上 世 紀 九十年代起 彭貞先生多次獲得海內外 書法大獎 2010 年獲四國書畫 切尼斯 杯 金獎 彭貞先生創立的 中華字經 被中國教育部制定爲海外華僑必讀之作 品 2015 年 12 月 31 日至 2016 年 1 月彭 貞先生在芝加哥南唐人街希林藝術中心 舉行 書 詩 聯 文回歸展 展出書法 對聯 散文的作品 80 多幅 Zhen Peng, calligrapher, author of Zhong Hua Zi Jing Mr. Zhen Peng was born in Taiwan and immigrated to Chicago in He has been practicing calligraphy since he was 8 years old under the influence of his father. He built his own calligraphy style based on Yan, Huang, Ou, and Liu Styles. He has received rewards many times since 1890s both at home and aboard. He created Zhong Hua Zi Jing which was recognized as the mustread work for overseas Chinese by the Chinese Ministry of Education. The exhibition of writing, poem, couplet and essay of Mr. Zhen Peng was held in XiLin Art Center in South Chinatown from December 31st 2015 to January 31st 2016.

6 Staff Profile 員工介紹 滿曉燕 MBA 2015 年 12 月畢業于伊利諾伊大學芝加哥分校 (UIC) 獲工商管理醫藥管理方向碩士學位 此前于中國大陸從事呼吸及危重症醫學臨床工作多年 善于分析處理複雜疑難問題 愛好運動及交友 對于提高老年人群的健康狀況有著極大的熱情 Xiaoyan (Rose) Man Rose graduated from University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) in December 2015 in the MBA degree with the concentration of Healthcare Management. She used to work as a physician in Respiratory Diseases and Critical Care for many years. She has rich experience in senior patients medical care and health education. She is good at analyzing and handling problems in complicated and difficult situations. Her hobby is doing sports and making friends. She has the passion for the health improvement of aging population.

7 Health Knowledge Lower Respiratory Tract Infection Seniors are very vulnerable to respiratory tract infection, especially in winter and spring, which is due to weak immunocompetence, poor airway preventative capability and the invasion of the germs. Lower respiratory tract infection is the top infection for seniors, and often leads to death. In addition, Lung or respiratory tract infection can induce some complications, such as respiratory failure, heart attack, stroke, heart failure, gastrointestinal dysfunction, etc. Seniors may perform atypical symptoms when having respiratory tract infection. The common symptoms of respiratory tract infection include fever, cough (dry or productive), sputum, short of breath, chest distress, chest pain, and hemoptysis. However, seniors may only appear as drowsiness or lassitude without fever, cough and sputum, calling for a doctor visit as soon as possible. Another thing we need to be cautious about is that some heart disease has the similar symptoms with respiratory tract infection. For example, for some acute myocardial infarction and heart failure patients, they may have no chest pain and only show fever, cough, and short of breath. So it is very important to see a doctor and receive examination regularly and let her/him know your medical history. For those who have chronic diseases such as diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD), chronic heart failure (CHF), special attention should be paid to prevent the occurrence of the respiratory tract infection, because the infection can aggravate the original diseases, and even result in lethal outcome. It is critical to prevent the occurrence of the respiratory tract infection for seniors. Apart from healthy food, warm keeping, enough rest, and proper exercise, the preventive vaccinations like influenza vaccine, pneumovax can be helpful. 8 健康百科 呼吸系統疾病之下呼吸道感染 呼吸系統疾病是壹大類累及氣管 支氣管 肺 肺血管及胸膜的疾病 是老年人當中的常見病和多發病 尤其在冬春季節, 患呼吸系統疾病的老年人明顯增加 這與老年人免疫功能低下 氣道防禦功能減低及病菌入侵有關 肺部感染居老年感染疾病之首位, 常常是引起死亡的直接原因 另外, 由于感染而引起的並發症如心腦血管意外 心肺功能衰竭 胃腸功能紊亂等也是老年人死亡的常見原因 老年人患呼吸道感染症狀常常不典型 ( 年齡越大越是如此 ) 呼吸道感染分上呼吸道感染和下呼吸道感染, 这里主要指下呼吸道感染 常見症狀有發熱 咳嗽 咳痰 胸悶氣喘 咯血 胸痛等, 但是, 很多老年患者沒有發熱甚至咳嗽 咳痰症狀, 僅僅表現爲食欲 精神差, 嗜睡, 這也需要警惕, 及時去看醫生 有些心髒病和呼吸道感染有類似的表現, 如咳嗽 咳痰 胸悶 氣喘 胸痛, 而且心肺可以互相作用, 所以常常會被被誤診或者漏診 所以定期體檢讓醫生了解自己的病史及有症狀及時去看醫生也是非常必要的 有慢性基礎病的老年患者的呼吸道感染需要得到特別關注 對于糖尿病的患者, 感染會增加血糖控制的難度, 同時血糖如果控制不佳會導致感染難以控制, 並發症增多, 死亡率增加 平時血糖控制很關鍵, 要定期複查血糖, 控制好飲食, 如有感染及早去就醫 對于慢性阻塞性肺病的老人, 感染往往會使平時的咳嗽 咳痰症狀加重, 咳膿性痰, 出現或加重呼吸困難, 如果出現明顯的嗜睡或頭痛, 咳嗽咳痰突然減少要小心呼吸衰竭的出現及時就醫 平時要注意加強痰液的引流, 避免痰液阻塞氣道 慎用催眠鎮靜類藥物 對于有慢性心腎功能不全的老年人, 感染常常會迅速加重心 腎功能不全, 出現少尿 氣喘加重等表現 預防呼吸道感染對老年人尤其是有慢性基礎病的老年人尤爲重要 健康飲食 保暖 充分休息 合理鍛煉以及及時注射流感及肺炎疫苗是預防呼吸道感染的有效途徑 參考文獻 : European Respiratory Society and European Society for Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. 9 Health Knowledge Winter Blues VS. SAD The winter blues are very common for people living in the Chicago metropolitan area. You may experience a mood shift during the chill and gloomy days of winter, such as feeling lethargic or down, which does not impact your ability to enjoy life. However, if the winter blues become severe, spreading over your daily life, you may be experiencing Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), which is a recurrent type of depression associated with the change in seasons. The symptoms of Winter Blues: 1. General sadness 2. A lack of energy 3. Difficulty sleeping 4. Feeling less social than usual 5. Difficulty taking initiative The symptoms of SAD: 1. Sleep too much 2. Overeating 3. Mood that is down or depressed most of the day, nearly every day 4. Loss of interest in activities you typically enjoy 5. Withdrawing and isolating yourself from friends and family 6. Struggling to focus and perform at work or home 7. Feeling constantly fatigued and lethargic 8. Feeling hopeless about the future 9. Having suicidal thoughts If you have above symptoms, it is imperative to visit your primary doctor or a psychologist/ mental health counselor. Our PINE study also has a Depression Intervention Program to improve the mental health and welling-being of the Chinese community, you can get more information by calling Treatments for Winter Blues and SAD: 1. Sunlight: Getting exposed to natural sunlight can improve serotonin production and the overall mood. 2. Light therapy: Spending a prescribed amount of time looking at the light box with the white fluorescent bulbs to imitate sunlight. 3. Exercise: Taking moderate exercise of at least 30 minutes a day may boost your mood. 4. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT): Research shows that CBT is helpful for all types of depression. 5. Medication: Using antidepressants to manage the chemical imbalances associated with the winter blues and SAD. References: More Than Just the Winter Blues? 12 PINE Partner 合作夥伴 Asian Health Coalition 亞洲健康同盟 The mission of Asian Health Coalition is to improve the health and well-being of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) in Illinois through advocacy, technical assistance, education, and communitybased research. Asian Health Coalition was founded as the Asian Health Coalition of Illinois back in Up till 1999, it was run by a volunteer Board. In 1999, the agency was successful in getting a grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Cultural Affairs to hire its first full-time Executive Director.
