1 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY REPORT TO: Trust Board DATE: Tuesday 4 December 2018 AGENDA NO: 2.1 AGENDA ITEM: Healthcare Worker Flu Vaccination Best Practice SPONSOR: Julie Cooper, Director of People PREPARED BY: Linsey Clements, Head of Staff Health and Wellbeing and Engagement PRESENTED BY: Darryn Allcorn, Chief Nurse Purpose The purpose of this paper is to presents Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust s (NDHT) self-assessment against the best management checklist for healthcare worker vaccination as requested by NHS England in its letter to Chief Executives dated 7 September 2018 to the Board. Link to Strategic Objective(s) Decision Approval Receive Ratify This paper supports delivery of the following strategic objectives by assuring Board members that NDHT is able to give public assurance that we are providing NDHT healthcare workers the opportunity to receive a flu vaccination and we are supporting the ambition for the NHS to have 100% of healthcare workers with direct patient care vaccinated against seasonal flu. 1. Support individuals and communities to have more influence Key Issues The following key issues should be noted: The Trust Board are committed to achieving the overall ambition of 100% of front line healthcare workers being vaccinated The Board champion for flu is Darryn Allcorn, Chief Nurse and Peer Vaccinator All Board members have been offered the flu vaccine and this has been publicised Equality-Related Impact The Trust is committed to an inclusive NHS that is fair and accessible to all; to upholding the principles of human rights and equality of people who use our services and of those who work in them. 3 Healthcare Worker Flu Vaccination Best Practice Management 1. Purpose 1.1. This paper presents NDHT s self-assessment against the best management checklist for healthcare worker vaccination as requested by NHS England in its letter to Chief Executives dated 7 September Background 2.1. It is the ambition of the NHS for 100% of healthcare workers with direct patient care to be vaccinated against seasonal flu. In order to provide public assurance NDHT is doing everything possible as an employer to protect patients and staff from seasonal flu we have completed the attached self-assessment which outlines our commitment to this ambition. 3. Checklist 3.1. Attached is NDHT s completed self-assessment. 4. Conclusion and recommendations 4.1. It is concluded that as a Trust we are able to give public assurance that we are providing NDHT healthcare workers the opportunity to receive a flu vaccination. Page 3 of 5

Board members were offered the flu vaccination and this was publicised in the Chief Executive Bulletin October 2018 Flu group membership includes representatives across the Trust A8 Flu team to meet regularly from August 2018 Face to face meetings throughout the year and telephone conferences weekly within the flu campaign. B B1 B2 Communications Plan Rationale for the flu vaccination programme and myth busting to be published sponsored by senior clinical leaders and trade unions Drop in clinics and mobile vaccination schedule to be published electronically, on social media and paper This was publicised in the Chief Executive Bulletin 31 5 October 2018, on payslip leaflets and a Flu Quiz with prizes to those who take part Available on BOB,Twitter and on payslip leaflets B3 Board and senior managers having their Chief Executive Bulletin October Trust Secretariat Page 4 of 5

5 vaccinations to be publicised 2018 B4 B5 B6 C C1 Flu vaccination programme and access to vaccination on induction programmes Programme to be publicised on screensavers, posters and social media Weekly feedback on percentage uptake for directorates, teams and professional groups Flexible accessibility Peer vaccinators, ideally at least one in each clinical area to be identified, trained, released to vaccinate and empowered Occupational Health Nurse attending inductions in October, November and December to provide vaccinations to new starters On screensavers and BOB, peer vaccinator posters in all areas. Published weekly in Chief Executive Bulletin and on front screen of BOB as jab-ometer and against local Trusts. Discussed at flu group 34 peer vaccinators across the Trust, received either face to face training or e- learning package. Supported by Occupational Health team to vaccinate. C2 Schedule for easy access drop in clinics agreed Early bird at NDDH on shift hand over at 6.30am. Drop in clinics provided at sites across the Trust during October. More targeted provision during November. C3 D D1 Schedule for 24 hour mobile vaccinations to be agreed Incentives Board to agree on incentives and how to publicise this Peer vaccinators on a range of shifts available at NDDH. Incentive to have jab and vote for money towards Trust projects. Breakfast pastries to those having their jab at the start of the campaign. Incentives for peer vaccinators to provide vaccinations.
