Role title Directorate Reports to Job title(s) of direct reports Policy and Campaigns Assistant Communications and Engagement Campaigns and Public Affairs Manager N/A Our three values Freethinking Affirming Bright Inventive, Open, Bold, Fearless and Ready to challenge Trusts and Respects, Supports, Inspires and Makes a positive impact Expert, Focused, Shows Passion, Energy and Leads the way Overview of directorate The Communications and Engagement Directorate aims to engage with the public and those affected to keep breast cancer at the forefront of people s minds and on the agenda, raise awareness of Breast Cancer Now, influence policy practice and change behavior. The Directorate is responsible for five areas - Digital Engagement; Brand and Communications; PR and Celebrity; Policy and Campaigns and Public Health and Information and is made up of around 55 posts. Purpose of the role To support the policy and campaigns team to deliver specific tasks and projects including the delivery of activities and events. To assist with the campaigning work of the organisation. To support the public affairs work of Breast Cancer Now, and assist with engagement with politicians and relevant policy makers, including the All Party Parliamentary Group on Breast Cancer. To carry out research to support the development of our evidence-based policy positions and recommendations, as required and with the support of the policy team.

2 Key accountabilities Daily political monitoring and support, carrying out research and advising the wider team on relevant issues. Working with the Policy and Campaigns team to provide support to the All Party Parliamentary Group on Breast Cancer, the Breast Cancer Ambassadors, and other supportive elected representatives in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Support and undertake engagement with women directly affected by breast cancer, their families, health professionals and other relevant stakeholders, to inform our campaigns, policy, and public affairs work. Conduct relevant research to support the development of evidence-based policy positions and develop policy expertise in specific priority areas, as directed by the Policy Manager. Draft relevant documents across your brief, including consultation responses, parliamentary briefings, position papers, blog posts, campaigns materials and so on. Support the team, with event and meetings organisation, travel and accommodation booking, etc. Working across the organisation Work closely and collaboratively with other teams and departments to ensure that the work of the team supports, and is integrated across, the organisation and that policy and campaigns information is communicated internally and through external communications as appropriate. Ensure that colleagues across the organisation are informed as appropriate about ongoing policy and campaigns work and serve as an internal reference point for information on policy positions and the external political, policy and health environment. Ensure that the charity s website contains relevant and up to date information about the charity s policy and campaigns work and draft articles and updates about key activities for the charity s publications. 3 Experience Person Specification We would like you to have the following experience: An undergraduate degree or equivalent experience Of organising events and keeping administrative records Of undertaking desk research with an overview of key research methodologies Of developing strong written arguments based on evidence Of campaigning for change, with a parliamentary or other focus Working with supporters/advocates, including interacting sensitively with people who are living with/have lived through distressing personal experiences Skills We would like you to have the following skills: Demonstrate excellent communication skills (verbal and written) including the ability to translate complex information into accessible language suitable for non-expert audiences e.g. politicians, policy makers, the public and people affected by breast cancer Organise your work effectively, setting objectives and prioritising your workload in a busy environment, working under pressure and at times to tight deadlines while delivering on longterm objectives Carry out desk-based research, analysing and interpreting data to a high level of accuracy Work well as a member of a team, with a wide variety of people Use Microsoft Office applications and the internet proficiently Excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to deal sensitively with patients and the public Attributes We would like you to have the following attributes: An understanding of the current political landscape Knowledge and understanding of UK parliamentary process and legislative systems Knowledge of key policy areas relevant to the charity, for example health, public health prevention or medical research policy Ability to build Knowledge of the NHS and health structures across the four nations of the UK Ability to work within the Charity Commission Guidance on campaigning and the Lobbying Act
