3 NEWS Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care Ontario Helping Every Household Fight The Flu McGuinty Government Prepares For A Different Flu Season NEWS September 9, /nr-068 Ontario wants to help prepare all residents for the upcoming flu season, which will be a different flu season from previous years. This fall and winter, there will be two types of flu viruses circulating seasonal flu viruses and the H1N1 flu virus. Two flu vaccines are being developed against these viruses. The seasonal flu vaccine and the H1N1 flu vaccine will be made available this Fall. To ensure all Ontarians are properly informed about this flu season, beginning next week every home in Ontario will be receiving information in the mail regarding the vaccination programs, who to contact for more information, as well as tips on how to prevent the flu and stay healthy. For additional information on how this year is a different flu season, visit ontario.ca/flu. QUOTES I want to make sure all Ontarians have the information they need to flight the flu. I would encourage everyone to practise the precautions outlined in the flu brochure. If we all do our part, we can keep Ontario healthy. David Caplan, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care The fight against the flu begins with each one of us. I strongly encourage everyone to take the personal precautions we clearly spell out in this brochure to prevent the spread of flu in Ontario this autumn. Dr. Arlene King, Chief Medical Officer of Health QUICK FACTS Flu season in Ontario typically starts in October and ends in April. A seasonal flu vaccination will not protect people against the H1N1 flu virus. LEARN MORE Stay up-to-date online for developments of Ontario s flu campaign. Find out more about the two flu shot programs available this flu season. Find a flu clinic near you. 7 MEDIA ADVISORY Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care Note to Editors: Ontario Influenza Bulletin August 28, 2009 The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care has issued the latest edition of the Ontario Influenza Bulletin. Highlights on the H1N1 flu virus in the bulletin for the surveillance period of August 16 to August 22, 2009 include: For the surveillance period of August 16 to August 22, 2009: Overall, influenza activity in Ontario was similar compared the previous week. However, the rate of influenza-like illness (ILI) in patients seen by sentinel physicians is above what is expected for this time of year, particularly for those less than 19 years of age. More patients reporting influenza-like symptoms consulted sentinel physicians this week than the previous week. The majority of health units continue to report sporadic activity. Only one health unit reported localized activity. There are 4,053 confirmed cases of H1N1 flu virus reported through the integrated Public Health System (iphis) as of August 22, As of August 26: 23 deaths have been reported among confirmed H1N1 cases. 25 people who have the H1N1 flu virus were in hospital as of 8:30 a.m. on August 26, a number of whom have underlying medical conditions. 335 other people have been hospitalized and have since been discharged. A fewer number of hospitalized cases were reported this week compared to last week. One new death among cases was reported this week. Please note: The Influenza Bulletin provides information based on the surveillance period from August 16 to August 22, Case counts from the previous week are submitted to the ministry by public health units every Tuesday. Data on hospitalizations and deaths is submitted daily and therefore is accurate as of August 26 th. The Ontario Influenza Bulletin is available on the ministry website at: David Jensen, Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, ontario.ca/health-news Disponible en français

Through the 2008 Physician Services Agreement, the ministry and the Ontario Medical Association have jointly committed to ensuring timely access to ER services 24 hours a day, seven days per week. The Agreement includes an ED Collaboration Incentive fund of up to $14M, split evenly over the next two years (2009/10 and 2010/11). This initiative recognizes ER physician groups who meet established targets related to the following goals: Achievement by all ERs at hospitals in a LHIN of wait time targets. Targets are established by the ER/ALC Strategy Pay for Results program. For non-admitted CTAS IV and V patient visits, the target is currently 4.0 hours. Maintenance of 24/7 ER access, where none of the ERs in a LHIN closed for any period of time over the course of the 2009/10 year due to physician staffing issues.
