Berlin Campus Supporting Language Development Across Cultures Young children develop oral language skills beginning before birth, as they process the language (s) of their environment, distinguishing patterns of sounds and storing them in memory. One and two-year-old children can learn more than one language if they have sustained, ongoing, engaging experiences that use each language. Teachers support English and Dual Language Learners needs by frequently interacting in these languages in order to optimally develop their language skills by using words, phrases, songs and rhymes. Rich literacy experiences, primarily through picture books shared and read, help support language development across cultures. 2 White City Head Start News Taking advantage during a break in the weather last week, Sue Johnson s PM2 class from White City expanded on their Farms theme to do a little beautification to the outside environment. 5 The Flu is here, and we want you to be prepared. According to the CDC: 1. Who should get vaccinated with the flu vaccine? Everyone 6 months or older need to get the flu vaccine. 2. When should I get the flu vaccine? Get the flu shot NOW! It is important to get the vaccine before it starts to spread. 3. Where can I get the flu vaccine? Doctor's offices, pharmacies, health departments, many employers, and some schools. 4. Do I need the flu vaccine every year? Due to the decline over time to your immune system, it is recommended to get the vaccine every season. Also, the flu vaccine is updated to keep up with changing flu viruses. 5. Does the flu vaccine work right away? The vaccine takes about two weeks to protect you from getting the flu. This is why it is important to get vaccinated early before symptoms appear. 6. What if I already have flu symptoms? 7 Safety tips: Kids in the kitchen Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking on the stovetop so you can keep an eye on the food. Stay in the home when cooking your turkey and check on it frequently. Keep children away from the stove. The stove will be hot and kids should stay 3 feet away. Make sure kids stay away from hot food and liquids. The steam or splash from vegetables, gravy or coffee could cause serious burns. Keep the floor clear so you don t trip over kids, toys, pocketbooks or bags. Keep knives out of the reach of children. Be sure electric cords from an electric knife, coffee maker, plate warmer or mixer are not dangling off the counter within easy reach of a child. Keep matches and utility lighters out of the reach of children up high in a locked cabinet. Never leave children alone in room with a lit a candle. Make sure your smoke alarms are working. Test them by pushing the test button. Thawing a Frozen Turkey If you are buying a frozen turkey, allow plenty of time for it to defrost. You can defrost the turkey in the refrigerator or in cold water. Never defrost a turkey at room temperature. Defrosting the bird in the refrigerator is the safest method, and also requires the least maintenance. Leave the turkey in its original wrapping and place it in a baking pan, breast side up. Allow 24 hours of thawing time for every five pounds of turkey. If you choose to use the cold water method, put the turkey, still in its original wrapping, in a large sealed bag to prevent contamination. Place the turkey in a basin or bath and cover with cold water. Change the water completely every 30 minutes. You should allow 30 minutes of thawing per pound. Undoubtedly this is a faster (though labor-intensive) method, but there is a risk of bacterial growth near the surface of the bird as the interior continues to thaw. Once thawed this way, the turkey should be cooked immediately. Handling a Raw Turkey From Butterball Foodservice Advice from the turkey experts: Make sure you use a separate cutting board and utensils for the turkey to avoid contaminating other foods. Be sure to wash your hands with hot, soapy water before touching anything else in the kitchen. Wash the cutting boards and utensils used for the turkey as soon as you are done with them. Use paper towels instead of cloths for clean up wherever possible. Stuffing the Turkey If you choose to stuff the turkey rather than cook it separately, stuff the bird just before it goes into the oven. Be sure to remove the giblets and rinse the turkey in and out with cold water first. Place the stuffing loosely into the turkey s cavity. Remember, you will need to allow a longer cooking time if the bird is stuffed. Cooking the Turkey People have different ideas about how to cook a turkey. So long as you roast the bird at a minimum of 325 degrees until the thickest part of the inner thigh registers 180 degrees on an instant-read thermometer, you will be fine. The breast meat should register 170 degrees, and if the bird is stuffed, the stuffing must reach 165 degrees. See diagram for approximate cooking times. Out of the Oven Once out of the oven, allow the turkey to rest for at least minutes to allow the juices to settle. The temperature of the bird will continue to rise. After carving the turkey, allow leftovers to cool slightly (but no more than an hour), then place in an airtight container and store in the refrigerator. Store leftover stuffing separately. Use within three days. Finally, for those moments of panic on the day, there is plenty of help available from various turkey hotlines.
