2 1817: Formal Deaf Education Begins in United States Laurent Clerc and Thomas H. Gallaudet founded the first permanent school for the deaf in Hartford, Connecticut, called The Connecticut Asylum for the Education and Instruction of Deaf and Dumb Persons. 3 1829: Braille Invents the Raised Point Alphabet Louis Braille, a man who had gone blind from an infected eye cut, adapted a code previously developed by the French army captain, Charles Barbier de la Serre. This code was originally used for soldiers to read messages in the dark without giving away their position. Braille simplified this code and published the first Braille book in 1829.

4 1907- Eugenic Sterilization Law in Indiana Believing that confirmed criminals, idiots, imbeciles and rapists was a hereditary problem, the Governor of Indiana passed an involuntary sterilization law in 1907 in order to strengthen the gene pool.

5 1929- Nazi Disability Euthanasia Known as Mercy Killings Hitler euthanized those he considered useless to society: people with physical disabilities, mental disabilities, and those who had mental retardation. Between 1929 and 1935, over 270,000 people had been euthanized.

6 1941- Rosemary Kennedy Lobotomized Rosemary Kennedy was born with intellectual disabilities. Her family paid for her to be privately tutored through all of her schooling years, but she only reached a fourth grade level. The family hid her disability from the public as much as possible. When Rosemary was 23 years old, she started displaying more assertive and aggressive behavior such as sneaking away at night from her convert school in Washington D.C. Her family feared embarrassment because of their political standing. Rosemary s father, Joseph Kennedy, was told that a new procedure, known as lobotomy, was available that would work to calm her. John allowed Rosemary to be lobotomized without informing her mother. The goals of the procedure failed, however, and Rosemary was left incapacitated for the rest of her life.

7 Willowbrook School Shut Down Willowbrook State School in Long Island, New York was an institution for individuals with disabilities. The school is known for it s deplorable and inhumane conditions. In 1972, 5,000 parents filed a class action lawsuit known as New York ARC vs. Rockefeller. The judge ruled that New York State needed to improve community placement for the residents of Willowbrook. Willowbrook started shutting down at that time, but the last resident left in 1987.

1988- Deaf President Now There were three candidates available for presidency of Gallaudet University, a college designed for deaf students, in 1988. Dr. Elizabeth Zinser was the first candidate.

8 1988- Deaf President Now There were three candidates available for presidency of Gallaudet University, a college designed for deaf students, in Dr. Elizabeth Zinser was the first candidate. She was hearing, did not know sign language, and did not have a background involving the deaf culture. Next was Dr. I Dean Jordan. Dr. Jordan was deaf and was, at the time, the dean of students at Gallaudet University. Dr. Harvey Corson, the third candidate, was also deaf and was a superintendent at the Louisiana School for the Deaf. Interestingly, the school had not had a deaf president it s entire 124 year history. The students were very excited about the possibility of having two deaf candidates running for the presidency. However, when it was announced that the hearing candidate was chosen for the position, the deaf students became outraged. The students took over the campus, locked the gates, and barred entry to all staff. The students demanded to have a deaf president, shouting Deaf President Now through the night. They won the fight and Dr. I Dean Jordan was then announced president of Gallaudet University.

9 2002- Expression of Remorse over Eugenics The Commonwealth of Virginia House of Delegates expressed regret over it s practices involving eugenics from 1924 and 1979.
