2 Introduction In our recent healthcare disruption study, we asked providers which technologies they think would be most impactful in the coming years. While the majority of respondents indicated artificial intelligence and telemedicine were at the top of their list, there s still a lot of buzz around speech recognition. Speech recognition is not new technology. Despite the fact that it's an effective, proven tool that has improved the lives of countless healthcare providers, there's still a surprising number of individuals who think their organization will never adopt a speech recognition solution. That being said, we reached out to providers to see if we could get a better picture of where speech recognition is going. This report gives insights into the following questions: What are providers plans for speech recognition? Which vendors are being used most by our respondents? What are those vendors satisfaction scores? Why did respondents give the satisfaction score they did? What is the integration like to EHR systems? What is the replacement rate like? Which vendors are being considered most? Trended data from previous years on many of these questions. EHRs are not the only use case for speech recognition. In the coming weeks we will have new insights around speech recognition and how it relates to cardiology, radiology, and pathology. Another 14% have plans to do so. But that leaves a gaping hole of almost 25% who say they have no interest in deploying a speech solution. This is surprising given that the consensus is that speech recognition allows for a more streamlined process, and more facetime with the patients. 6 Ease of Integration While integration has certainly been an issue in the HIT universe, speech recognition technology doesn t appear to have that big of issue. A full 3/4 s of participants reported having a seamless integration between their solution and their EHR. That s pretty impressive. 75% Voice Rec needs to be more integrated and like a separate app. embedding voice rec into worklists, EMRs, PACS, etc will be the best long term workflow. -VP of IT We were using (Vendor) with Epic. None of us (25 providers) are still using it. I won't until it is seamless, which it currently is not. 7 Customer Comments It is the most accurate voice recognition system that I have used. - Chief of Emergency Department Reliable speech recognition functionality; ability to program EMR commands via voice - Chief Medical Information Officer It is clunky and takes time to edit after dictating. - Pediatrician I can talk into the microphone and it is fast in getting the words onto the paper. 8 Replacement Rates Speech recognition replacement rates We re not switching - 97% Leaving our current vendor To only have a 3% replacement rate says a lot about the speech recognition vendors. In our previous EHR Satisfaction report, we saw replacement rates ranged from 11-16%. 9 Reasons for Not Adopting Money is the top reason why some may never implement a speech solution. Accuracy was also a concern expressed, even by some currently using speech. But getting physicians to use it could be a challenge especially those getting close to retirement. 10 Conclusion So there you have it. The majority of physicians are using speech recognition with their EHR. But not yet to an overwhelming degree. There s still a sizable percentage who have yet to adopt and some are dead-set against ever using speech recognition to interact with their respective EHRs. One thing is for certain, speech recognition technology is getting better overall, and exciting new advancements such as NLP are on the horizon. That may alleviate some of the hesitation. Another factor is the millennial generation. They are comfortable with and have come to expect high usability tech in most aspects of their lives (personal and professional). If they re using Siri to text, write s, etc, the expectation may certainly be there to navigate solutions they use in their medical practice. In essence, tools that will streamline their processes will surely be embraced. The seeming challenge for Nuance is how they will adapt and evolve with the market and how long can they hold off an aggressive up-and-coming challenger like M*Modal, to say nothing about exciting new players like nvoq.
