3 Paolo NESPOLI, IZØJPA Nespoli performed 2 ISS missions. In 2007 as STS-120 crewmember established 3 ARISS school contacts. In 2010 as ISS Exp. 26/27 member established 45 ARISS school contacts, and sets an ARISS milestone! Nespoli strongly supported at ESA the HAM Video project provided by AMSAT Italia, then manufactured by Kayser Italia. Nespoli will be ISS Exp. 52/53 member from May to October 2017.

4 School Selection Before the application window September November 2016, Stefan Dombrowski, ON6TI ARSPEX working group chairman sent an invitation to IARI Region member societies to publish ARISS School Contacts Call for Candidate Schools in their magazine as soon as possible. Selected schools can expect to benefit from an ARISS contact in the period September January 2018.

ARISS Europe Application Window 1 As indicated in the EuroSchools WG ToRs, the European schools apply for an event to be tentatively scheduled during the EU contact window 1 (Sept. 2017 Jan. 2018).

9 ARISS Europe Application Window 1 As indicated in the EuroSchools WG ToRs, the European schools apply for an event to be tentatively scheduled during the EU contact window 1 (Sept Jan. 2018). Any time applications can be accepted for contacts in July and August (Holidays period), provided enough slots are available. In case of slots available for European region in June 2017, the EuroSchools WG will propose to already selected Italian schools for contact window September January 2018 to anticipate their events during Nespoli mission, as happened for Pesquet mission in the previous selection window.

ARISS Europe Selection Window 1 Usually the EuroSchools WG agree to assign 60% of the total slots assigned to the European region to schools selected from the astronaut s country of origin.

The EuroSchools WG will select, from all the European requests received in the Application Window 1, schools to be scheduled as direct or telebridge events. Corresponding slots assigned to Italian schools for ARISS contacts will be selected by EuroSchools WG and ASI, based on upcoming specific agreement.

11 ASI Involvement ASI Educational Office agrees on the selection process in the European ARISS region, as well as detailed in EuroSchools ToRs. ARISS Europe selection will include the selection of the Italian schools interested in participating in an ASI-ARISS event as part of the upcoming educational plan for the 2017 Paolo Nespoli s mission. ASI and AMSAT Italia will decide how to select Italian schools among the list of the proposals submitted to ARISS Europe. The ASI-ARISS events will take place within Nespoli s mission, actually scheduled from May 29 to October 16, 2017.

12 LASI-ESA Educational activities to be approved As it is recalled under the ASI/ESA Arrangement, Paolo Nespoli s mission offers a great opportunity to raise awareness of the younger generations and the general public for scientific disciplines, and to demonstrate the potential of the International Space Station as a valuable platform for the educational and academic community. The ASI-ESA Education Plan, that is still to be approved by ASI Board of Directors, includes the following activities for the Paolo Nespoli s Mission: a) YiSS Contest (ASI) b) EXPLORA (ASI) c) SpaceChef competition (TBC - ASI) d) Mission X Train like an Astronaut (ASI/ESA) e) ARISS/HAM Video Contacts (ASI/ESA/AMSAT Italia) f) EPO Scripts (ESA/ASI) g) Working with Museums, Planetaria and Science Centres (ASI/ESA) h) AstroPi (ESA)

13 ARISS/HAM Video ARISS is the amateur radio contact with the ISS which is run by ARISS community in collaboration with space agencies that support the International Space Station (ISS) for crew time allocation. In addition, Ham TV has been set up in ESA s Columbus laboratory and in certain operational scenarios may be added to ham radio for space educational purposes, offering school children the chance to talk and see astronauts in space with simple equipment. Per ESA mission, ARISS-EU appoints up to 3 contacts for ESA, which do not have to undergo the standard selection process by ARISS. ESA and ASI agree to organize a minimum 3 the ARISS/HAM Video contacts for Italian schools, selected by ASI/ARISS. If other slot will be available for ARISS contacts during the mission, ASI will organize other ARISS events in collaboration with AMSAT Italia. The ARISS events will be organized by ASI in agreement with ESA and ARISS/AMSAT Italia for Italian schools only. The contacts can be conducted in Italian. During summer, since schools in Italy are closed, the contacts can be organized with Italian Schools in South America, Australia or South Africa. The target age range for ARISS varies greatly but ESA typically supports contacts between the station and children aged 8-16, however all ages are acceptable.

2017 Nespoli mission timeline Probably Paolo Nespoli will be operation aboard ISS for ARISS events from beginning June 2017. This month of the year is expected favorable for direct contacts.

In July is expected favorable for telebridge contacts, and then in August is again favorable for direct contacts, but this two mouths are summer period for north hemisphere of the world, then might be a good opportunity to organize ARISS events in summer camps or at host organizations in south hemisphere of the world, as in south America, south Africa and Australia. September will be expected favorable for telebridge contacts and becomes good to organize ARISS events with schools and in north hemisphere of the world. The last chance for direct contacts with Nespoli from schools in the north hemisphere of the world will be in early October.

16 2017 Nespoli mission ISS Call sign AMSAT Italia provided through the Communication Department of MISE (Ministry of industry) the special amateur radio authorization for any Italian ESA astronaut for HAM Radio contacts during their missions onboard ISS to use special call sig: IRØISS The special call sign IRØISS can be used by any astronaut when an Italian astronaut is onboard for contacts with schools in any country.

17 Ariss Team/s in Italy ARISS program is sustained in Italy by voluntary radio amateurs groups disseminated on national territory.
