1 FIBER-SPLINT ML (MULTI-LAYER) of POLYDENTIA SA APPLICATION OF FIBERGLASS RIBBONS IN PERIODONTOLOGY Introduction Fiber-Splint Multi-Layer (ML) is the product leading the second generation of splinting materials offered by Polydentia SA. If products of first generation as for example Fiber-Splint have been successfully introduced into the market since 1989 with a monolayer fiberglass strip, the new product consists of 6 layers already sewn together one over the other. Thus, the individual layers no longer have to be applied onto each other, saving significantly valuable chair time. At the same time the new multilayered version maintains its traditional flexibility, offering an absolutely reliable method for splinting and general reinforcements of temporary bridges. Fig. 3: Measuring of the lenght A rubber dam has been placed in order to isolate the operative field. The necessary length of the fiberglass ribbon is measured, in this case using a dental floss. Fig. 4: Preparation of dental surfaces The lingual surface is etched, coated with primer and bonding agent (Fiber-Bond, Polydentia). At the same time, the fiberglass ribbon will be impregnated with Fiber-Bond outside of the oral cavity. 2

3 Fig. 5: Clip & Splint autoclavable clips The fiberglass ribbon has been positioned with Clip&Splint, but not yet light-cured. The ribbon perfectly fits to the lingual surface of the involved teeth by adhering into the interdental spaces thanks to the application clips. Light-cure. Clip&Splint are supplied with the product and are autoclavable. Fig. 6: Finalisation with composite flow The hardened fiberglass ribbon is coated with a layer of flowable composite in order to get a smoother surface and for general protection. It is visible that the oral hygiene has been easily kept using interdental brushes and sticks in the inferior anterior sector. 4

5 Conclusion Fiber-Splint Multi-Layer (ML) provides a comfortable and reliable solution for all kind of treatments with dental splints. The aesthetic results are excellent, granting full comfort to the patients and enhancing their self-confidence. The technique is time-saving and cost effective. The manageability is also optimal: no special scissors are required and the fiberglass ribbon does not fray while cutted. Fiber-Splint ML offers therefore an easy to use, reliable and biocompatible alternative to metal splints. 5
