A lot of clients misunderstanding stress What s wrong with me? Am I going mad? Is it a sign of weakness? I feel I can never go back to my job client experience I can t face going back to the workplace Will I ever recover?
Not all stress is bad - we need a certain amount of stress to feel alive and stimulated In nature, episodes of stress are relieved by periods of inactivity healthy stress By working with our bodies natural systems we can deal with stress without being overwhelmed by it
biology of stress Stressor Cortisol shuts off stress reaction Adrenaline rapid response (seconds) Cortisol slower response (mins-hours) Adrenal glands
stress response early stage Adrenaline Cortisol Adrenaline produced rapidly Fight-or-flight reaction Cortisol produced more slowly Stress response terminated - feeling of exhilaration
stress response chronic stress Cortisol Adrenaline Stressors arriving in rapid succession Cortisol levels rise and remain high Stress response never fully terminated Feeling of exhilaration remains, but difficulties winding down or sleeping
stress response burnout stage Adrenaline Cortisol Adrenal glands fail to produce enough cortisol, so stress response cannot be shut down Adrenaline levels remain high Strong reactions to the slightest trigger (fear, anger, depression, panic attacks)
stress response - overview
what are the factors causing stress in your workplace? individual, deadlines, competition, overseas markets, regulation, customers, relationships, personalities, organizational pressures, global environment, audits & inspections, appraisals
what effects do you notice? physically, mentally and emotionally
physical effects of stress Heart works harder Increased blood pressure Blood clotting increased Memories related to stressor enhanced, other information treated as irrelevant Overworked circuits eventually burn out Closed down to conserve energy Closed down to save energy Liver function reduced Muscles atrophy Bone density reduced
Headaches Backaches Chest tightness Fatigue physical signs of stress Stomach cramps Breathing difficulties Bowel problems Loss of libido Sleeping problems
Depression Anxiety and panic attacks Aggression and angry outbursts Personality changes Relationship problems psychological signs of stress Making mistakes, concentration lapses Memory lapses, forgetfulness Alcohol abuse or other addictions Triggering of underlying conditions (eg. bipolar disorder, OCD)
Stress in the news 42% of organisations seen a rise in stress related absence The North West has highest rates of absence at 8.8 days per year 26% of organisations say that pulling a sickie is still a problem
While responding to stress is good... Its even better to create a resilient individual, team or organisation before stress occurs Commercial benefits to having a resilient organisation over and above dealing with stress from stress to resilience Staying ahead of the market place, being ready for new challenges, dealing with rapid change and agility
what makes us resilient? a short video clip -
0% Stress-related Absenteeism Figures Cheshire based International Pharmaceutical company The Resilient Specialists were invited to tackle the challenge of high stress related absenteeism figures Some key middle managers were off work due to stress-related illness Case Study There was a lack of awareness of the signs and symptoms of stress Nearly sixty middle and senior management went through our Resilience programme starting in the final quarter of To date not a single person including staff outside of the managers, has gone off sick with stress related illness. (August 2014)
Organisational profiling to understand the origins of stress and the potential for resilience Partnering with Senior Managers / Leaders to support culture change towards greater resilience How we did it Coaching for work and home life challenges, team strengthening, developing technical staff, and more Bespoke seminars developed to suit your specific requirements Workshops for individual and team resilience Backed by a team of 25 therapists at Hope Street able to tackle any personal or psychological issue
Unlike a training course, The Resilience Programme achieves its results when everyone from top management is engaged. We understand the importance It s not a quick fix or an easy solution, it s a journey towards culture change what this meant for the organisation We ll match your commitment From the results we ve achieved elsewhere we know what makes the programme work creating awareness, commitment from top management, being realistic, sustaining regularity, working with culture to promote culture change to remove stigma
