3 Today s Concerns/Issues Adolescent Behavioral Health Issues have become a major concern in today s society Suicide/Self Harm, Trauma, Eating Disorders, & Substance Abuse Depression, Bullying, & School Shootings (several in MD already) The Joint Commission requires suicide screening for youth and strongly recommends assessment of other behavioral issues American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Psychiatric Association recommend universal screening for depression Behavioral Health Screening has been shown to lower health care costs Effective treatments are available but most behavioral health problem are undetected and therefore untreated

4 Suicide & Behavioral Health 600, ,000 suicide attempts annually (~35,000 successful) Over 90% of those attempting suicide have other mental health issues (depression, substance abuse, etc.) Suicide is 3 rd leading cause of death for ages % of youth who die by suicide have co-occurring depression Only 2% of adolescents with depression report receiving treatment Psychiatric disorders in primary care 16% depression 11% anxiety 9% eating disorder 6% sexually abused 5% suicidal thinking

5 Current 4 th generation Web tool (history in Appendix): Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model Self report in English and Spanish Scientifically validated and refined (references in Appendix) The BH-Works Solution Screen across 12 behavioral health domains in under 10 minutes Covers areas required or recommended by American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Psychiatric Association, and the Joint Commission. Modules to use in clinics, emergency departments, and schools Deployment team experienced with addressing the challenges: Where and when to screen What happens after the interview, where is the report, who receives the report? How to link screening to counseling centers Training available on how to talk about and assess suicidality, substance use, depression, and all other areas.

12 BH-Works History The Behavioral Health Screen is a validated instrument developed by Guy Diamond, PhD at the University of Pennsylvania to improve care of adolescents and young adults 2004: 1 st generation Windows Desktop/Web application for data collection/analysis in primary care offices 2007: 2 nd generation utilized the BHS, but created a 100% webbased version with Joel Fein, Pediatrician in the ED Began as a study in the CHoP ED (Children s Hospital of Philadelphia Emergency Department) and still in use today as a clinical tool 2010: 3 rd generation Guy Diamond leveraged web-based version and extended it to include additional screening domains Supported by Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) grant. Deployed to Primary Care offices across the state of Pennsylvania.
