1 Ericksonian Hypnosis in the Treatment of Depression. Webinar. Please answer the following questions. Michael Yapko 1. The rate of depression has stayed roughly the same over the last half-century. 2. There is good evidence that children and adults can be taught preventive strategies for depression. 3. Each of the therapies for depression that are considered empirically supported place heavy emphasis on looking for historical causes for depression s onset. 4. Depression is 100% caused by genetics. 5. Depression can increase in prevalence as it moves from generation to generation. Bill Wade and Carol Kershaw: 6. Laughing gas has been used to change depressive states. 1
2 7. When brain states are the focus of intervention, the results are often better. 8. The clinician can activate the client s own placebo for healing. 9. By shifting brain states, depression often disappears, but the positive state must be conditioned. 10. Panksepp found that opioids are extremely good antidepressants. Carloyn Daitch: 11. People with depression often also experience anxiety. 12. It is normal to experience depression if you are older. 13. Hypnosis can increase optimism among depressed clients. 14. Hypnosis can alter cognitive, emotional, behavioral and physical responses that accompany depression. 2
3 15. Clients with depression often feel hopeless. Bill O Hanlon: 16. Focusing on talking about the depression can sometimes make things worse. 17. Learning new things and taking in new information can be difficult for people who are depressed. 18. There is a new hypothesis regarding depression that involves neurogenesis. 19. Depressed people tend to ruminate on the same thoughts. 20. Depression in not like a bad trance. 3
4 Steve Andreas: 21. Resolving Grief involves saying goodbye to the lost experience. 22. Full expression of the sorrow in response to loss brings resolution. 23. Thinking of a loss that is remembered as a positive resourceful present felt experience is the key to resolution of grief. 24. Sometimes depression can result from unresolved grief. 25. Grief turns into emptiness when it looks like a distant loss. Rob McNeilly. 26. Hypnosis can force an individual to resolve their depression. 27. Depression is identical for every client. 28. Solution hypnosis can help an individual to connect with the experience of their resolution. 4
5 29. Hypnosis can make depression worse. 30. Hypnosis is more effective when it is tailored to each unique individual. You have now completed the exam.
