Sadness Hurts Anxiety } Very Real Depression
Depression is a Topic in the Bible: Abraham (Genesis 15) Jonah (Jonah 4) Job King Saul (1 Sam 16) Jeremiah (the weeping prophet) Cain (Gen 4 depression because of guilt)
Depression is a Topic in the Bible: DAVID (Psalm 32:3-4 depression from guilt over adultery, Psalm 38:6,8) MANY OTHER PSALMS: 6, 13, 18, 23, 25, 27, etc = about 50!!!! ELIJAH 1 Kings 19 1 Kings 19:4 He prayed that he might die, and said, it is enough! Now, Lord, take my life, for I am no better than my fathers
Elijah - 1 Kings 19 Jezebel wanted him dead! He panicked: He focused on his enemies power and not God s power He focused only on his present circumstances He was physically exhausted
God Had a Plan to Heal Elijah! 1 Kings 19 to get him some rest & refreshment to get him a new focus: to see things weren t as bad as he thought to set some new expectations by showing Elijah that sometimes God is working in the still small voice not the Big Show of Power lastly, for him to be obedient and get moving to accomplish what God had called him to

Why is talking about Depression important on a Sunday morning?
Is seeking help a sign of weakness and how can it help?
Does all depression look alike?
Different Kinds of Depression Major Depression, also called clinical depression Dysthymia, or chronic depression, which is a low grade depression that occurs over a prolonged period of time
Different Kinds of Depression Atypical Depression Bipolar Depression Seasonal Affective Disorder Postpartum Depression PTSD
What are things to look for symptoms of Depression?
Symptoms? Difficulty concentrating, remembering details, making decisions Fatigue and decreased energy Feelings of guilt, worthlessness Feeling hopeless Insomnia, waking up early, excessive sleeping Irritability, restlessness Loss of interest in activities or hobbies Overeating or appetite loss Persistent sad, anxious, or empty feelings Uncontrolled tearfulness
Can Children be legitimately depressed?
What are common traps people should avoid when they are struggling with depression?
Traps to Avoid Rumination Self-medicating Skipping exercise Negative thinking Social withdrawal
Is there a link between Loneliness and Depression?
Is there a link between suicide and depression?
How should I respond to someone who tells me they are thinking about hurting themselves or they are suicidal?
Take talk about suicide seriously Specificity of plan ask questions: Lethality of proposed method Availability of method Proximity of helping resources (such as supportive friends and family) Call 911. Don t leave them alone.
SO WHAT?
SO WHAT? 2 Corinthians 4:8-9, We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; 9 persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; 16 So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. 17 For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, 18 as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.
NOW WHAT? How can you help someone? Pay attention to them. Show up. Help them not be alone. Live out Genesis 2:18 with them. Don t worry that you have the right thing to say. Your presence says a lot more than your words anyway. Accept them where they are. Don t judge them. Love them in & through their brokenness. Listen to them. Reflect back to them what you hear. Show them you care. Encourage them. Spur them on. Provide appropriate comfort. Give them a safe place to be and encourage them to talk. If they don t want to talk, just sit with them. If the depression persists, encourage them to get professional help.
NOW WHAT? How can you help YOU? Remember Philippians 4 (Pray, Praise, Dwell on the Positive, Practice) ALLOW GOD s WORD TO TEACH YOU/COMFORT YOU/GUIDE Draw Close! SURRENDER YOUR LIFE to CHRIST: Gal 2:20 20 I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
NOW WHAT? How can you help YOU? Seek Help Family, Community, Church If Necessary, a professional Counselor Medication is sometimes needed Shine Light in the Darkness **YOU ARE NOT ALONE!
NEXT STEPS: Take a Picture! 1. Talk to God more than anything 2. Talk to Somebody -Community Groups -WOMENS STUDY MONDAY NIGHT 7:00pm -MENS STUDY MONDAY NIGHT 7:30pm (Sat 7:00a) 2.
