2 Introduction Sonuç Health and beauty are always important. According to American Plastic Surgery(2012), there was an increase in the cosmetic operations of women and men. Psychosocial assessment begins with the initial meeting with the patient and significant indicators of a successful result. It should be known that why the patient choose cosmetic surgery.
3 Introduction In order to decide whether the patient is a suitable candidate for cosmotic surgery, teamwork and nursing approach are important.
4 METHODS This descriptive study was carried out to describe self esteem and social view anxiety in cosmetic surgery patients. It was conducted in Reconstructive and Esthetic Polyclinic of a University Hospital. Data was collected between March and June, 2014.
5 METHODS The study included 115 patients. It was approval by ethics committee. Official permission were obtained from the hospital. informed consent was receive from the patients.
6 Data collection The questionnaire consisted of three sections; These are; Patients characteristics (20 questions) Rosenberg self-esteem scale (with 10 questions) Social appearance anxiety scale(with 16 questions)
7 ROSENBERG SELF ESTEEM SCALE It was developed by Morris Rosenberg. Turkish version of the scale was conducted by Cuhadaroglu (1986). The scale consists of 12 sub-categories. The first 10 items of the scale was employed to measure self-esteem.
8 ROSENBERG SELF ESTEEM SCALE Increased scale score shows that low self-esteem. 0-1 points: a higher level of self-esteem 2-4 points: a medium level self-esteem 5-6 points: a lower level self-esteem
9 THE SOCIAL APPEARANCE ANXIETY SCALE (SAAS) This scale was development by Hart et.al (2008). Social Appearance Anxiety Scale (SGKÖ) has 16 items. Turkish version of the scale was conducted by Doğan. Increased scale points show that high appearance anxiety.
10 Data analysis Data was analyzed by SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Science 16) programme Median, minimum and maximum Mann-Whitney U test Kruskal Wallis test Spearman's test were used.
11 Results and Discussion Characteristics of patients In the study, majority of the patients are women (93 %) between age, 47 % of the patients are single while 45,2 % are married, Most of the patients (53 %) have children, Their incomes equal their expenses (69,6 %), Most do not smoke (70,4 %) and nor do they drink alcohol (77, 2 %) and Most (83,5 %) have not received a psychiatric treatment.
12 Correlation between Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale and The Social Appearance Anxiety Scale r p Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale(RSES) The Social Appearance Anxiety Scale (SAAS) -0,419 0,0001 There are meaningful correlation between the two scales (p<0,05). As the social appearance anxiety score increased, it seems that their selfesteem decreased.
13 Patients who admitted to cosmetic surgery, there were relationship between their self-esteem with their physical appearances. When their self-esteem decreased, they went for cosmetic surgery. (Crerand ve ark. 2008; Kamburoğlu ve Özgür 2007)
14 Average scores of Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale and The Social Appearance Anxiety Scale Scale points n Mean Median Minimum Maximum Standard Deviation RSES score ,17 22,00 11,00 38,00 4,28 SAAS score ,15 28,00 16,00 68,00 11,59 RSES average score SAAS average score 115 2,22 2,20 1,10 3,80, ,82 1,75 1,00 4,25,72 Looking at the average score of the Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale, we can see that the patients have a medium level of self-esteem.
15 Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale and Social Appearance Anxiety Scale Scores according to the Patients Characteristics There is a significant difference between the genders in terms of social appearance anxiety scale score (p<0,05). The social appearance anxiety of males is considerably higher. A study stated that 56 % of the females and 43 % of the males are not generally satisfied with their physical appearance (Haas ve ark. 2008).
16 Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale and Social Appearance Anxiety Scale Scores according to the Patients Characteristics There is difference between age groups in RSES scores (p<0,05). It was noticed that the self-esteems of the patients over 50 were higher than the other age groups.
17 Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale and Social Appearance Anxiety Scale Scores according to the Patients Characteristics There is a statistically significant difference between marital status (p<0,05). The self-esteems of the widows were found to be higher than the others.
18 Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale and Social Appearance Anxiety Scale Scores according to the Patients Characteristics There is a statistically difference between the diagnoses in terms of Rosenberg self-esteem score (p<0,05). The self-esteem of the patients with deformity were found to be higher compared to other diagnosis.
19 Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale and Social Appearance Anxiety Scale Scores according to the Patients Characteristics It was reported that individuals generally choose cosmetic surgery to attain the change their appearance, to regain their earlier appearance, to avoid the social labeling ageing creates. (Crerand ve ark. 2008; Rankin ve Mayers 2008).
20 Conclusion Nowadays cosmetic surgery demand has increased therefore it is important to identify patients unsuitable for surgery. When patients assessment in terms of psychological and they prepare to cosmetic the surgery, operation success can be increased. Psychosocial assessment skills of nurses should be increased.
