1 C1 Qu2 DP2 High levels of preventable chronic disease, injury and mental health problems - Diabetes Hey Guys, The third area that we are going to look at today is diabetes. NATURE OF THE CONDITION Diabetes is disease that affects the bodies ability to take on glucose from the bloodstream and use it for energy. It is caused by the pancreas malfunctioning, which can lead to insufficient insulin levels. Insulin is the hormone responsible for the regulation of blood glucose. There are three types of Diabetes: Type 1: this generally presents early in life and a person who suffers from it will require insulin injections and must monitor their diet and exercise. Type 2: generally presents later in life and is closely related to poor diet and lack of exercise. This requires medication Gestational Diabetes: occurs during pregnancy and must be closely monitored. The long term effects of diabetes can include vision problems, kidney disease and is a strong link to CVD. EXTENT OF THE PROBLEM The problem is that diabetes is the fastest growing disease in the world. This is generally linked to our diets. With this being the case, the age at which we are diagnosed is now decreasing and becoming younger and younger. RISK FACTORS AND PROTECTIVE FACTORS With diabetes we have modifiable and non modifiable risk factors. And Non-modifiable risk factors include: - being over 55 years old - Over 35 and ATSI - family history
2 The Modifiable risk factors include: - being overweight - having gestational diabetes - Having CVD - high blood pressure - poor diet The protective factors that we know of include - maintaining a healthy weight and diet which includes low GI foods and not over consuming meals (E.G. have smaller meals) - physical activity and low amounts of alcohol Because the prevalence of diabetes is growing so rapidly, these protective need to be promoted as much as possible to lessen the likelihood of diabetes and curb this issue in our society. SOCIOCULTURAL, SOCIOECONOMIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL DETERMINANTS Again we look at the socioeconomic, sociocultural and environmental determinants of health to understand the areas that affect the nature of the problem. The socioeconomic determinants can include being from a Low SES area. People in these areas are more likely to have a poor diet, drink excessively and be overweight due to low physical activity levels. Also there is less awareness of health promotion and prevention strategies due to lower levels of education. The Sociocultural Determinants can include - the fact that it is socially acceptable to binge drink - Australia s ageing population - Not managing time effectively leads to poor choices in diet and exercise levels We also need to consider the Environmental Determinants: People in rural and remote areas as well as ATSI have less access to medical services. The increased levels of technology use and fast food advertising are also issue.
3 GROUPS AT RISK The groups at risk of diabetes include - the elderly, - ATSI, - people living in rural - and remote areas and low SES areas. As you can see, all three conditions we have explored in the past 3 videos have similar determinants of health and groups that are at risk. This is why we suggest you consider diabetes to be your ONE other condition. If you prefer to choose another condition, such as respiratory disease, injury or mental health problems and illnesses, be sure to follow the syllabus required format, like we have, which is: - the nature of the problem - the extent of the problem, i.e. the trends - the risk factors and protectors of the condition - the sociocultural, socioeconomic and environmental determinants - and groups at risk to developing the condition
