4 Mindy and I are simply messengers for our educational partners: What s The Best Sweetener? Sugar Consumption in Canada Diabetes in Canada Who Gets Diabetes? The Cause of Diabetes Sugar (or carbs) is not the cause of insulin resistance Eating meat (protein and fat) Protein raises insulin in the blood Creating inflammation Increased insulin and inflammation blocks fat mobilization from the muscle cell Fat enters into the muscle cells creating more inflammation Fat in the cells block ability of insulin to drive sugar into the muscle cell Insulin resistance is caused by fat toxicity to the muscle cell** *Anderson, Haynie, et al *RTC Goff, Bell et al

5 Diabetes A global crisis There is a worldwide epidemic as Western eating habits spread The roots of type 2 diabetes remain in insulin resistance and pancreatic failure Blame for the current diabetes epidemic lies in an overall dietary pattern emphasizing meat, dairy products, and fatty foods, aided by sugary foods and beverages, not sugar alone A diet emphasizing vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and legumes and avoiding animal products helps prevent diabetes and improves management after diagnosis NIH-AARP Diet and Health Study was developed at NCI was conducted among members of the AARP aged years in areas of the U.S. A total of 500,000 completed the study, making it the largest study of diet and health ever conducted. Results: Meat consumption was associated with an increased risk of dying from cancer, heart disease and premature death in general The idea that eating sugar causes diabetes is inaccurate. Nonetheless, avoiding added sugars is a helpful step, and it should be taken in addition to a healthful plant-based eating pattern, not instead of it. After these results, the called for a major reduction in total meat intake University of Toronto July 2018 It s Time To Stop Debating and Take Action! A new study, conducted by University of Toronto, has shown improved health, and lowered risk of heart disease to be associated with a plant-based diet. Encourages the consumption of soy-based products in the place of meats and dairy Improvements in the cholesterol levels, blood pressure, and triglycerides Over half of participants were able to lower their cholesterol by 15 to 20 percent over a six-month period The largest managed care organization in the country 15,000 physicians Recently published a nutritional update for all of their physicians stating healthy eating is best achieved via a whole foods plant based diet Discouraging meat, dairy products, eggs, and all refined processed foods Plant-based diets are the nutritional equivalent of quitting smoking * *Dr. Neal Bernard, President of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine STRIKE SUGAR with TOSCA RENO lb/person Present day lb/person A GLUT OF SUGAR 5
