3 Background (i) ENWHP: Programs for promoting health at the worksite (WHPP) reduce abseenteism and increase productivity. Healthcare at the workplace is a path for more competitive organizations, generating value for the company (VOI, reputation, talent retention) and financial returns (ROI)
4 Background (ii) IBV: The lack of ergonomic criteria when designing workplaces generates expenditures related to labour accidents, diseases (compensations, treatments and abseeteism), productivity losses and increased turnover
5 Background (iii) UC: Regular physical activity increases protection against suffering Non Communicable Diseases (cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, ), and activates the antiinflammatory system
6 Background (iv) TU/e: Motivation is the process that initiates, guides and maintains the behaviours focused on achieving an objective or a goal

8 Physical activity when working Physical demands at the workplace have changed Energy demands in nowadays s workplaces are far from what a healthy lifestyle requires Some tasks are related to MSDs (musculoskeletal disordes), which are among the most common occupational diseases in the EU, and the most important cause of long-term sick leave
9 EU physical activity Guidelines EU Physical Activity Guidelines (2008) are aimed to recommend actions for promoting physical activity that improve the general condition and benefits health One of these guidelines is specifically referred to promoting health at the worksite: Guideline 33 In their agreements, employers and trade unions should include requirements for the workplace which facilitate a physically active lifestyle. Examples : (1) Access to exercise facilities; (2) Availability of a physical activity professional for individual advice and instruction; (3) Support for workplacerelated sport participation; (4) Support for using cycling and walking as transportation to and from the workplace; (5) If the work is monotonous or heavy to the extent that it implies an increased risk of skeletal muscle disorders, access to exercises specifically designed to counteract these diseases; (6) A physical activity-friendly working environment
10 The fitwork project s aim (i) fitwork s vision is to improve European employees well-being, by implementing physical activity programs in companies, which are specifically designed to comply with the tasks carried out by workers at their place of work We need to combine two specific knowledges: Risk assessment at the workplace Definition of physical activity programs that counteract the risks derived from work demands
11 The fitwork project s aim (ii) Good practices for implementing physical activity programs are required in order to: Support occupational professionals to indentify exercises that are adequate for counteracting the ergonomic risks indentified in the workstations Physical exercises Programs Ergonomic risks Support physical activity professionals for defining programs that increase the workers endurance against the workplace demands A Worksite Health Promotion Program
12 What have we been doing? (from January 2017)
13 We have been Indetifying MSDs related to most common ergonomic risks detected in workplaces, and the physical exercises that have to be performed, for minimising the work demands effect on workers health Developing physical activity promotion plans, which include motivational aspects, in order workers perform physical exercises and adopt more healthy lifestyles, specially those who are sedentary or obese

19 Some conclusions 18 month project focused on promoting physical activity at the workplace A questionnaire for identifying success factors in promoting physical activity at the workplace, responded by 31 companies in 7 EU countries and Canada 2 pilot tests, performed in 2 different EU countries (Poland and Italy), with the participation of 45 workers during 24 weeks Participants were office workers and manufacturing workers A battery of physical exercises, apropiate for strengthening specific body parts, affected by ergonomics risks derived from certain work demands A good practices guide, written for supporting occupational and HS professionals interested in promoting physical activity at the workplace
