So what does it all mean?
Conclusions 2016 those high schools that implemented Bigger, Faster, Stronger (BFS) program had fewer concussions SHS & KCHS High school and Volleyball programs without BFS or had numerous training room programs by multiple coaches more concussions, knee injuries and limited success Middle schools do not have certified weight training instructors or coaches Weight rooms and equipment found to be substandard, cluttered with numerous safety issues
Our BFS Story Mr. John Rowbotham, President of BFS
What is BFS? BFS 3 Keys to Success: 1. Supervision 2. Use Orientation & Warning 3. Unified Instruction
John s YouTube Video BFS In-Action John s YouTube Video: Be An 11 Inspiration
Lack of Unified Instruction Unified Instruction There does not appear to be a unified approach to instruction in this weight room Various teaching protocols for free weights, cardio machines and selector equipment Lack of unified instruction leads to student confusion, poor and inconsistent lifting and spotting techniques When students don t have a clear picture and understanding of how to lift with proper technique, and what a proper progression is, in regards to weight selection they tend to pick a weight that is heavier than they should actually be lifting leads to potential injury
W ww.presentationpro.com Weight Training Program Data Storage (Body of Evidence): There does not seem to be a unified form of student workout record keeping Some teams are using log books or weekly printouts, but not all Without recording the workout that place in the weight room, students do not have a way to see how they are progressing and teachers do not have way to truly evaluate students Record keeping is one of the most important thing in weight training The data that students can see over time in the weight training class can have a huge impact on their self confidence as well as their self worth Importance of Record Keeping
Equipment Maintenance Issues Equipment Maintenance: Undetermined any of the schools have all of the equipment maintenance information from equipment suppliers In certain locations equipment is broken and needs to be removed from the room Equipment is rarely if ever cleaned after use Multiple items found on the floor need storage devices
Supervision & Orientation Issues Limited visual support for proper technique, spotting, risks, dress code, etc. There is not a standardized orientation that all students/athletes go through prior to using the weight room Students are not required to sign a document stating they have been taught how to properly use all the equipment nor risks involved if equipment is not used properly Lack of visual support and reinforcement, something that needs to change, so students can see on a daily basis what is expected of them when utilizing the weight room
NMS Weight Room Concerns
NMS Weight Room Concerns Flooring: Room does not have non-slip rubber flooring safety issue Proper flooring Acts as floor protection & helps prolong life of equipment when it is dropped Very good for lifting and jumping *Must have rubber flooring*
Frayed or Broken Cables
NMS Weight Room Concerns Overall Impression of Room/Conclusions: Room is very limited in what it can offer due to the old and out dated piece of equipment that takes up half of the room Room is not conducive to training students for athletic movements like running or jumping It is important to train free weight activities even when the only resistance being very light, from a young age to build balance and stabilization Overall Grade of Room: C
NMS New Weight Room
NHS Weight Room Concerns Equipment Spacing: Overall spacing of the equipment in the room is very poor and dangerous No enough space for the 7-foot Olympic bars. There should be 2- feet of open space on each side for spotting, changing weights, etc. Numerous items on the floor including bars Multiple tripping hazards
Training Room Clutter/Broken Equipment
Overall Impression of Room/Conclusion: NHS Weight Room Concerns Room is in need of lot of updates Room is plenty big, but space is not being utilized Multiple pieces of equipment are not functional or efficient for training students Multiple items on the floor that should not be here Room lacking in proper quantity of belts, collars and items for storage Lacks some critical items for teaching beginners and young students Overall this is not an effective classroom Overall Grade of Room: C
NHS New Weight Room #1
NHS New Weight Room #2
TBA Weight Room Concerns Equipment Spacing: The overall spacing of the equipment in this room is pretty good Some of the equipment could use a bit more space on either side for people to load and unload plates There are some items on the floor that should not be there
TBA Flooring Issues & Tripping Hazards
TBA Weight Room Concerns Cardio Equipment/Selector (Cable Equipment: Cardio selector equipment appear to be in good working condition Need additional signage for cardio & selector equipment; explaining proper use and risks of improper use The selector equipment is not secured to the floor leads to equipment moving and potentially tipping
TBA Weight Room Concerns When students don t have a clear picture and understanding of how to lift with proper technique, and what a proper progression is in regard to weight selection they tend to pick a weight that is heavier than what they should be lifting leads to potential injuries Overall Grade of Room: C
TBA New Weight Room
SHS Weight Room Concerns Equipment Spacing: Overall spacing of the equipment in this room is very poor and dangerous Many of the items are too close together very dangerous
SHS Weight Room Concerns Equipment Spacing (continued): Limited space for 7-foot Olympic bars should be 2-feet of open space on each side for spotting, changing weights, etc. Some of the bars do not have enough space Numerous items on the floor that should not be there multiple tripping hazards
SHS Flooring Issues
SHS Weight Room Concerns Mirrors: One mirror in the smaller room set up in very dangerous position Leans against the wall not secured Broken at the bottom and very sharp
SHS Weight Room Concerns Free Weights/Plate Loaded Equipment: Racks and benches not secured to the floor very dangerous Lack of storage for bars, etc. Multiple bars are leaned up in the corner of the room Many plates and dumbbells on the floor Shortage of good collars to secure plates on the bars
SHS Weight Room Concerns Cardio Equipment/Selector (Cable Equipment): Lack of signage for cardio & selector equipment explaining proper use Lack of signage explaining risks of improper use Selector equipment is not secured to the floor leads to equipment moving and potentially tipping
SHS Weight Room Concerns Overall Impression of Room/Conclusions: This room has some serious safety concerns The equipment does not appear to be maintained consistently The lack of organization and structure in the room is a large concern
SHS Weight Room Concerns Overall Impressions of Room/Conclusions Continued: There are multiple items on the floor that should not be there The room lacks proper quality belts, collars and items for storage It also lacks some critical items for teaching beginners and young students
SHS Weight Room Concerns Overall Impression of Room/Conclusions Continued: The room needs some major changes as well as some equipment maintenance and a thorough cleaning The room has plenty of space to be effective just needs an overhaul Overall Grade of Room: C
SHS New Weight Room: Front Room
SHS New Weight Room: Back Room
KMS Weight Room Concerns Equipment Spacing: Overall spacing of the equipment is pretty good Concern#1: Some items on the floor that should not be there Concern#2: Inadequate spacing for 7- foot Olympic bars Some of the bars do mot have enough space Basic rule: 11-feet of space for each 7-foot bar gives you 2-feet on each side
KMS Weight Room Concerns Free Weights/Plate Loaded Equipment: Racks and benches are not secured to the floor very dangerous Racks are very old and do not allow users to get in the correct position while using the rack They are also limited due to inadequate bar catches and safeties Spacing of equipment can also be better to maximize the efficiency of the room
Old Racks & Benches
KMS Weight Room Concerns Overall Impression of Room/Conclusions: The room is a great size for the number of students Room is missing very important pieces of equipment for proper safety. Examples: Neck machine that helps prevent concussions Concerns regarding Supervision, Student Orientation and lack of Unified Instruction Lack of teaching/lighter equipment for beginners The space is adequate but the equipment is limiting Overall Grade of Room C
KMS New Weight Room
KCHS Weight Room Concerns Mirrors: Mirrors are positioned too low especially of a weight plate leaning against the wall One mirror that is unsecured leaning against a door very dangerous
KCHS Weight Room Concerns Free Weights/Plate Loaded Equipment: There are racks that space bars on the floor or stood up in a corner very dangerous Need for storage bar Spare bars are not secured to the floor or stood up in corner unsecured Multiple items have pads that should be replaced
KCHS Weight Room Concerns Overall Impression of Room/Conclusions: Overall spacing of this room is very good The room has a user friendly feel The amount of space is exceptional
KCHS Weight Room Concerns Conclusions Continued: Concerns in regards to Supervision, Student orientation, and lack of Unified Instruction Lack of teaching/lighter equipment for beginners Makes it hard to educate beginners without pushing them toward fatigue very quickly makes it hard to get a lot of practice with perfect technique Without a lot of work the room could increase it s overall effectiveness and safety Overall Grade of Room C
