Biomechanics of soldier movement apparatus methods for kinematics, kinetics and muscular activity evaluation in non-laboratory conditions Cygoń Krzysztof, Bednorz Roman, Maliszewski Jakub
Origin of the idea? Historically: Étienne-Jules Marey ( ) Thanks to his research that focused on gait and neuromuscular forces, as well as the physical education classes in school, he received a donation from French ministry of war and ministry of education. He received money along woth vlounteers (soldiers) for his study. Soldiers were supposed to perform verious exercises like gait and run around the lab with the pace given by electric beeper, as well as they carried the load of kgs to generate fatigue. The idea was to check their fitness and send to the units with similar generall fitness and strenght level.
Research made under Marey guidance were made by two researchers Demeny and lt. Andriveau. First of them was particulary interested in testing of his theories in the gimnastics for that he made movies of soldiers during various tasks.
Current state of the art Analysis: rilfe aiming line vs target Barrel movements Whole body movement (stabilometry) Trigger squeeze
Current state of the art Conclusions: Two different aiming strategies dependent on the target type (moving/fixed); Rifle movement can be slowed by a proper movement strategy. Fixed targets strategy -> Fixation. Moving target strategy -> Interception
Current state of the art Thesis: No one ever analysed the influence of posture and body position of the shooting outcomes.
Current state of the art Conclusions: No final conclusion about the first thesis, but the well-trained riflemen does not differ in terms of the angular position of the upper limbs
Question: How the COP change affect the accuracy? Current state of the art
Current state of the art Conclusions: Accuracy is improved when body weight is shifted forward.
Current state of the art Analysis: Muscle fatigue analysis with the use of different rifle mass and COM.
Current state of the art m. brachioradialis m. Biceps brachii m. Deltoideus anterior part Muscle of the supporting limb are contracted more, if the mass is shifted forward.
Current state of the art Thesis How different rifle design affect the grip; how the grip stability affect the quality of shooting. Conclusions: Different weapon construction (grips) affect muscle activity and weapon control during aiming; Accuracy is affected by the level of control over weapon.
Summary of the current state of the art Can those results be put into practice? All research were conducted in standarized environment. According to Zatsiorsky: Fixed target strategy -> Fixation; Moving target strategy -> Interception. Under what condition the shots are fired?
How can we improve? Future research Research conducted outside of the laboratory; Research that utilize military-grade weapons, not competitve ones; Research with live ammunition; Shooting not only towards fixed target, but also onto the moving one; Shooting not only in competition condition but also after some fatigue.
Research under new guidelines Assumptions: So far, to determine the grenade mass, only the distance and accuracy were considered. This time also checked how mass of the grenade affects the muscle activity and movement kinematics.
Research under new guidelines Conclusions: Higher mass equals higher muscle activity; Number of injuries is strictly linked with the shoulder joint mobility limitations.
Research under new guidelines Should we evaluate only those before mentioned parameters?
Research under new guidelines Summary: Portable systems should be used for research(imu/semg/insoles?); Research should be done outside of the lab; Tests, whether the trained shooter can make the efficient shot when fatigued, using the beat-to-beat of the heart momentum?
Research under new guidelines - goals Goals: Objective evaluation in conditions that refer as close to reality as possible; Guidelines for weapon ergonomy and design (length/mass/type); Setting the guidelines for screeing tests of military personnel to have tools for fast identifications of risk factors for human motor system; Implementation of novel training methods. And then we can say, that their trainings were bloodless battles, and battles become bloody exercises Flawiuss about Roman army
