From the President First and foremost I would like to thank each and every one of our Sponsors that have helped us to achieve our main objective in giving the local families a football club they can be proud of. Over the years that we have accomplished some great achievements and provided many avenues for the local children to have a base for there sporting lives. it is important to recognize that our success could not be achieved unless we had the generous support of the local businesses. It s that time of the year again and hasn t it flown. Already our team has started to train and the prospect of another year is nearly upon us. As is tradition we are in the middle of organizing our annual Xmas break up, that puts an end to all official functions for the year. It is a great time to get together reflect on the year s happenings and events and pass on our wishes for the New Year. Santa will again be there with treats for all the young ones with his sleigh being worked on at the moment, also for the older ones and not so old entertainment by the Doggies Duo, Scott and Chris for your listening pleasure. It s always the case that the more the merrier so put our date in your diary for Sunday 7 th December 12 4pm to make sure we can get there. Also important are the raffle tickets that everyone should have. With there being a cash prize it s very helpful for us all just before shopping time. For all those that can t attend I pass on my well wishes from my family and my extended family at the Bronx and hope to see everyone arrive back safe and sound after the Xmas break. Ken Gillett President North Heidelberg Football Club Local Hero Shane Harvey wins Northern Football League Best and Fairest North Melbourne s Brent Harvey may have scored 17 votes at the AFL Brownlow Medal count, but its his brother Shane who is the hero of the local sporting fans. Shane Harvey, Daniel Keenan and David Mitchell sensationally tied in the Northern Football Leagues Division One A Grade Best and Fairest for Shane was also awarded the NHFC's highest honor (The Schickert Medal) for Originally drafted from the Northern Knights Under 18 Development Squad, Shane played AFL for the Essendon and North Melbourne Football Clubs from The talented forward has proven that he still has the knack for finding goals, kicking 119 this season in the Northern League. Renowned for his pace and ability, Shane is most elusive player around goals I have seen NHFC Football Manager Shane Young said. Shane is probably the best footballer to come through the league in many years. He is not only a marvel to coach but a terrific role model to the younger players, Coach Paul Tilley said. My dad coached Shane s dad, Neil, to play football, so I grew up watching the Harvey family play the game. One of the positives about local football the players have a huge impact on the supporters. My son now watches Shane Harvey play for North Heidelberg he is both a talented player and is an inspiration to aspiring players Paul Tilley said. Congratulations to Dave Florance & Jarrod King for placing 2nd and 3rd respectively in the NHFC Best and Fairest for 2008.
Training for all Senior, Reserves and Under 19's players begins on Monday the 17th of November. Sessions will be conducted on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Coaches Round Up One of the misconceptions in the football world, (especially at North Heidelberg), is that a Footballer gets in shape by just playing or taking part in his chosen sport. If a stationary level of performance and/or consistent ability in executing a few limited skills is your goal then engaging only in football will keep you there. However, if you want the utmost efficiency, consistent improvement, and balanced abilities, North s footballers must participate in an almost year-round conditioning programme. The bottom line in sports conditioning and fitness training is stress. Not mental stress, but adaptive body stress. Footballers must put their bodies under a certain amount of stress to increase physical capabilities. Take Jason Dean and Ali Assi, some of the feedback I have received from long time North Supporters is that they are getting better and better every year. This stress must be introduced gradually over the preseason to prevent injuries and allow us to compete with footballers that may be more talented. Three types of players get about in the Northern Football League: One Two Three No real natural talent but works really hard. Will usually out last out player no two in the long run. All the talent in the world potential unrealised is such a waste. They have usually dominated in the junior ranks with out really trying, but when they come up against players no 1 or three, make excuses instead of realising that if they work hard they can achieve the same as no 3. Usually finish their careers earlier because of the lack dedication leading to injuries and lifetime trying to convince other people they could have been superstars but bad luck stepped in. These can be the people who constantly talk about themselves in a vain effort to receive the same adulation they received when natural ability was all they needed. If others will not talk them up they will. Talented and hard working Ali, Jordan, Boomer all superstars because natural talent and application = legend status. These players let their sporting prowess speak for themselves. No need to talk themselves up.
Definition of fitness Exercise scientists have identified nine elements that comprise the definition of fitness. The following lists each of the nine elements and an example of how they are used: Strength Power Agility Balance Flexibility Local muscle endurance Cardiovascular endurance Strength endurance Coordination the extent to which muscles can exert force by contracting against resistance (holding or restraining an object or person). the ability to exert maximum muscular contraction instantly in an explosive burst of movements (jumping or sprint starting). the ability to perform a series of explosive power movements in rapid succession in opposing directions (zigzag running or cutting movements). the ability to control the body s position, either stationary (eg a handstand) or while moving (eg a gymnastics floor exercise programme). the ability to achieve an extended range of motion without being impeded by excess tissue, ie fat or muscle (executing a leg split). a single muscle s ability to perform sustained work (rowing or cycling). the heart s ability to deliver blood to working muscles and their ability to use it (running long distances). a muscle s ability to perform a maximum contraction time after time (continuous explosive jumping and running through an entire game). the ability to integrate the above-listed components so that effective movements are achieved. Of all the nine elements of fitness the cardiac respiratory qualities are the most important to develop because they enhance all the other components of the conditioning equation. Agility In many sports agility is an important component required of your athletes. Agility is the ability to change the direction of the body in an efficient and effective manner and to achieve this they require a combination of: Balance Static balance Dynamic balance Speed Strength Coordination the ability to maintain equilibrium when stationary or moving (i.e. not to fall over) through the coordinated actions of our sensory functions (eyes, ears and the proprioceptive organs in our joints) ability to retain the centre of mass above the base of support balance under changing conditions of body movement the ability to move all or part of the body quickly The ability of a muscle or muscle group to overcome a resistance the ability to control the movement of the body in cooperation with the body s sensory functions, eg catching the footy (ball, hand and eye coordination). We can improve the athlete s agility by improving the component parts of agility (listed above) and practicing the movements in training.
Physical and motor fitness Physical fitness refers to the capacity of an athlete to meet the varied physical demands of their sport without reducing the athlete to a fatigued state. The components of physical fitness are strength, endurance, speed, flexibility and body composition. Motor fitness refers to the ability of an athlete to perform successfully at their sport. The components of motor fitness are agility, balance, coordination, power and reaction time. Preseason The above training must be introduced gradually. If a player starts preseason half way through the year, the sudden stress he is subjecting himself to will inevitably lead to injuries, which will put the player even more behind the 8 ball. When we train micro tears in our muscle result and we adapt. It is the adaptation to these tears over a period of time which allows us to progress. Coming in cold and trying to complete exercise at a level we are not ready for will lead to larger tears, or strains. Preseason is also a time when mental toughness is attained. The ability to push your self, (when everything in your body tells you to stop), repeatedly allows you to master your thought patterns, this puts you in charge not your brains weaker side. 20 injury prevention tips 1. Avoid training when you are tired. 2. Increase your consumption of carbohydrate during periods of heavy training. 3. Increase in training should be matched with increases in resting. 4. Any increase in training load should be preceded by an increase in strengthening. 5. Treat even seemingly minor injuries very carefully to prevent them becoming a big problem. 6. If you experience pain when training stop your training session immediately. 7. Never train hard if you are stiff from the previous effort. 8. Pay attention to hydration and nutrition. 9. Use appropriate training surfaces. 10. Check training and competition areas are clear of hazards. 11. Check equipment is appropriate and safe to use. 12. Introduce new activities very gradually. 13. Allow lots of time for warming up and cooling off. 14. Check over training and competition courses beforehand. 15. Train on different surfaces, using the right footwear. 16. Shower and change immediately after the cool down. 17. Stay away from infectious areas when training or competing very hard. 18. Be extremely fussy about hygiene in hot weather. 19. Monitor daily for signs of fatigue, if in doubt ease off. 20. Have regular sports massage. Paul Tilley Coach North Heidelberg Football Club
Jan Hancock and Faye Hare recognized in Sport and Recreation Victoria Awards for 2008 James Merlino, Minister for Sport, Recreation and Youth Affairs described the awards as the culmination of a state-wide search to find outstanding individuals, groups and organisations that are making an invaluable contribution to the sport and recreation industry in Victoria. "It is the tremendous commitment and effort of these people that keeps the spot and recreation industry in Victoria thriving, and helps Victorians to lead healthy and active lives" he said. Jan Hancock and Faye Hare were nominated for their contribution to volunteerism at the North Heidelberg Football Club. Read their story on our website Shelley Reserve gets a Facelift - Summer Seeding Program Banyule Council has allocated $180,000 for the conversion of seven sporting reserves to warm season's grasses including NJ Telfer Reserve, Montmorency Park, War Memorial Park, Beverley Road Oval, Warringal Park, Yulong Reserve and Shelley Park. The conversion process, which commenced in November 2008, will heavily reduce the amount of water needed to sustain the grounds during summer. Once the warm season grass is established, we will see the water useage for these ovals reduced by approximately 75 per cent over the next few years, said Nick Ellis, Sport and Community Liaison Officer. Council will also need to transport water to the ovals and have installed rainwater tanks for storage at each sporting ground, he said. The following work will be completed as part of the Summer Seeding Program: 1. Grounds will be mown short (10-12mm) and sprayed with coliseum (couch) to retard the existing cool seasons grass. 2. Approximately 1-2 weeks later, the line planting will begin followed by heavy irrigation. 3. Grounds will be irrigated by either mains or tank water (A grade recycled water) in accordance with stage 3a water restrictions. 4. After the line planting process has been complete surface conditions will be irregular, however safe for play. Please take care and be patient during the early weeks of the ground conversion process. 5. There will be follow up maintenance work conducted after the line planting process including rolling of the grounds, fertilisation and regular irrigation will continue throughout the summer period. The Summer Seeding Program is a joint partnership between Council and the State Government through the Drought Relief for Community Sport Program. For more details refer to
