7 Expectations of WVHS Athletes ACADEMICS FIRST Eligibility Checked every week on Thursday morning. Must be passing 5 classes. Fall eligibility Eligibility is based on 2 nd Semester grades of previous school year. MUST have passed 5 classes.

8 Expectations of WVHS Athletes Make and keep commitments, and follow rules of school, athletic code, and team during their high school career. Be coachable. Have a positive attitude. Be tobacco, alcohol & drug free. Set realistic and challenging goals. Demonstrate good sportsmanship at all times, in an out of season. Have a good work ethic. Be a leader and a positive role model.

9 Expectations of WVHS Parents Notify coaches of ANY injury or illness that our staff may not be aware of. Be Positive- Being on one of our high school teams is an accomplishment. Be Supportive- Nothing can erode teamwork faster than athletes doubting the capabilities of their coaches. Communicate fairly and openly with our coaching staff. Be a good role model- Demonstrate positive behavior and sportsmanship as a fan. Read, understand, discuss, and MOST OF ALL monitor the Athletic Code of Conduct. Attend pre-season meetings. Learn the rules of your particular sport. Encourage commitment and positive values

10 ISSUES NOT APPROPRIATE TO DISCUSS WITH COACHES Other athletes Philosophy- Play Calling Playing time Team or individual strategy. Do not attempt to confront a coach before or after a practice or contest. These surprise meetings rarely accomplish anything and do not promote resolutions. Call or ask the coach for a time to meet.

11 ISSUES THAT ARE APPROPRIATE TO DISCUSS WITH COACHES Concerns about academic eligibility. Concerns about behavior. Various ways to help son/daughter improve. The treatment of your son/daughter.

12 PROCEDURES & LINES OF COMMUNICATION TO FOLLOW 1. Communication between player and coach to resolve problems or conflicts. 2. Communication between parent and coach to resolve problems or conflicts. 3. Communication between athletic director, parents, coach, and athlete to resolve conflicts. 4. Communication between principal, athletic director, and parents to resolve conflicts.

13 Code of Conduct Substance Use or Possession Violation of the Athletic/Activities code of conduct if a student possesses, uses, distributes, or sells illegal drugs. In addition, if a student attends a party or gathering where alcohol or drugs are present or being consumed he/she would be violating the code of conduct. Voluntary Admission/1 st Offense Student may admit to a violation only one (1) time during his/her career. Must occur with the first 24 hours following the rules violation. The student may be required to attend an education program and/or may be suspended from 1 or more contests/events. **Voluntary admission is not applicable if authorities respond to a gathering where alcohol or drugs are present and report to school officials.**

14 Code of Conduct Substance Use or Possession (cont.) 1 st Offense: Suspended 40% of athletic/activity scheduled competition. If student completes an assessment program from a professional agency, suspension is reduced to 20%. During suspension, the student may practice but will NOT participate in contests/events. If student does not complete the suspension, the penalty will continue into the student s next activity. 2 nd Offense: Suspended for one calendar year from participating in all school activities. Before reinstatement, the student must provide evidence of completion of a required program. 3 rd Offense: Student will NOT participate in a school activity for the rest of his/her high school years until submitting substantial evidence of rehabilitation to seek reinstatement.

15 Code of Conduct Hazing/Harassment/Bullying **Hazing includes any humiliating or dangerous activity expected of a student in order to join a group regardless of that student s willingness to participate.** UNACCEPTABLE AND NOT TOLERATED at WVHS!! Students involved in this type of activity may be suspended from athletic/activity contests/events or removed from their teams permanently. If a student is unsure of an appropriate behavior or practice, a building administrator can clarify.

16 IHSA DRUG TESTING POLICY Required signature on athletic registration Random drug testing throughout the school year. Randomly select 12 individuals. Test is administered during any of the 3 seasons. WVHS has NOT been tested recently. Athletic Department anticipates it will happen this school year.

18 Injury Care Protocol 1. Report the injury to your Coach. 2. Get evaluated by the Athletic Trainer. 3. Parent is contacted, if necessary. 4. Referral to a Clinic or Physician, when appropriate. Rest Ice Compression Elevation -The injured athlete is expected to be in the athletic training room for any required treatment as directed by Athletic Trainer. -Not all injuries require removal from sports. Many can rehab and participate at same time.

19 Concussion Management Concussions are treated and managed by Licensed Allied Health Care Providers. Each institution must have a set protocol for treatment and management. Click here IHSA Concussion Presentation

20 Health Care Providers: What licensed health care providers can provide clearance for an athlete to return to play in the same contest in which he/she was removed for a possible head injury? 1. Physicians licensed to practice medicine in all its branches in Illinois (MD/DO) 2. Certified and Liscenced Athletic Trainers (ATC) If one of above designated health care providers is not able to clear an athlete to RTP in the contest he/she was removed for a possible head injury, the student athlete can NOT return to play per IHSA Return to Play Policy.

21 Learn more about Concussion: Fact or Fiction Fact Studies show that less than 10% of concussions result in loss of consciousness. A concussion can be sustained by a sudden, violent movement of the head caused by an unexpected external force to the body. This does not need to be a blow to the head. You only need to check on a concussed patient periodically. Fiction You have to have loss of consciousness to have sustained a concussion. Concussions are only a result of a direct blow to the head. You need to wake someone with a concussion every 20 minutes. Any response to the pupils is indicative of a much more serious brain injury. If the patient and/or athlete is coherently speaking to you, there is no need to check their pupils. You need to check pupils with a flashlight to see if they are dilated or uneven.

22 Patient/Athlete May Experience: Please note: symptoms may not surface until 48 to 72 hours after the injury. Headache or pressure in head Dizziness Nausea or vomiting Blurred/double vision Sensitivity to light Difficulty concentrating Difficulty remembering/loss of memory Spots before eyes Sensitivity to sound Ringing in the ears Feeling in a fog

23 At Home Recovery Tips: Avoid loud noises (Music, TV, band practices, or listening to a music device) Limit texting, reading, video games, typing, or internet use. Avoid any over-the-counter medications (Advil, Motrin, Ibuprofen, Aleve) that may mask symptoms, unless advised otherwise by a physician. If you re a student: the school nurse, athletic director, administrator, and/or guidance counselor should be contacted to postpone any quizzes or exams that may be needed.

24 Return to Participation & Return to Learn or ADL (Activities of Daily Living) Protocol* After sustaining a concussion, the following protocol, or a similar, will be used to safely progress an athlete s return to participation, school and daily functions. This should be performed under the direction of a qualified medical provider. It is recommended that there be approximately 24 hours between each stage. Recovery is different for every person who sustains a concussion. Recovery time cannot and should not be predetermined until a post-concussion evaluation by a certified athletic trainer. This return to play protocol does not begin until the athlete is symptom free for 24 hours.

Low Exertion Increased Exertion Stationary cycling keeping intensity. Running while keeping intensity. Can add movement without symptoms. (30 minute max) High Exertion Non-Contact Practice Return to Play Sport-specific exercises. No headimpact activities. Full practice without contact may start along with progressive resistance training. Normal game play. Add coordination and cognition without symptoms. 26 ImPACT Testing Immediate Post Concussion Assessment & Cognitive Testing When? Baseline testing done before start of school Post Injury Test will be taken when symptom-free after exertion. Results will be compared to the athlete s baseline test or normative data. Who? All Freshman, Juniors, New/Transfer Students and High impact Sports. Or anyone student athlete who wants a baseline test. Baseline Tests good for 2 years. What? Tests verbal and visual memory, reaction time, memory, and impulse control.

28 *This protocol is implemented to promote compliance with: IHSA Return to Play Policy, IHSA Protocol for Implementation of NFHS Sports Playing Rule for Concussions, Illinois HB 0200, and City of Chicago Ordinance Concussion Injuries in Student Athletes in Chicago Schools (Ch Municipal Code of Chicago) which outline that athletes exhibiting symptoms of a concussion cannot return to play until cleared by an appropriate healthcare professional.
