1 Small bowel MRI This leaflet contains information about how to prepare for your MRI scan and what to expect when you attend for your appointment. It is important that you read this leaflet carefully, with the MRI Scan leaflet, even if you have had a scan before. If you are unable to attend your appointment, please telephone the department on What is an MRI scan? MRI means Magnetic Resonance Imaging and this system uses a large magnet and a computer to produce pictures of your body. The examination is painless. The results of the scan will help your doctor to diagnose your condition/decide on any necessary treatment. How long will it take? You may be in the department for 1-2 hours. The scan usually takes between 20 and 60 minutes. You may be asked to stay for 30 minutes after the scan if you have been given an injection. Please note, we endeavour to keep to appointment times, however you may be delayed if an emergency arises. If so, we will keep you informed of the estimated delay time. Before you come to the department Is there any special preparation? Yes. For this examination to be successful it is important that your bowel is as clear and well prepared as possible. The following low residue diet must be followed for the 2 days before your examination. During the low residue diet do not eat anything with fibre. Two days before the examination Breakfast: Lunch: Supper: One or two slices of white toast or bread with a scraping of butter or margarine. No marmalade or jam. White fish or chicken and boiled potatoes, no vegetables. Clear jelly. OR White bread with chicken in a sandwich. Clear jelly. Same as lunch. You can drink as much fluid as you like. Try to drink extra clear water, squash or fizzy pop. You may also suck boiled sweets or mints. continued

2 One day before the examination Follow the meal plan on page 1. At 8am, dissolve the contents of the sachet of Klean-Prep in a litre of water. Drink over 1-1½ hours. Please be aware that Klean-Prep may cause loose bowel motions. For other possible side-effects see page 4. The evening before the examination Drink clear fluids only overnight. Stop eating and drinking at midnight and have nothing else until after your examination. IMPORTANT Before you take the Klean-Prep, telephone the MRI Department on if: You have been admitted to hospital as an inpatient since you were referred for this examination. Your condition has worsened so that you are significantly dehydrated or having difficulty in swallowing. You have any other concerns regarding the laxative preparation. Diabetic patients only If you have not received an appointment between 9am and 10am please contact the MRI Scan Department as soon as possible. Those on medication should bring the medication, and something to eat for after the scan. It is important that you do not enter the scan room with anything metallic. Eye make-up may need to be removed as some types can interfere with the scan. You will need to remove any jewellery, piercings or other metal items. Please do this before attending for your scan if possible. We may not be able to perform your scan if you cannot remove these items. Do not take credit cards, mobile phones or hearing aids into the scan room as the magnetic field can damage them and stop them working. Do I need to bring anything with me? No. You should avoid bringing valuables with you to the department Drug patches will need to be removed. Please bring a new one with you. Can I bring a relative or friend with me? Yes, but we do not routinely allow friends or relatives into the scan room during the MRI examination. You will remain responsible for any dependants (such as young children) accompanying you to your appointment. The staff will not be able to look after them while you are having your scan. 2

3 Additional needs If you have any additional needs (e.g. need a hoist) which are likely to affect your examination, please contact the MRI Scan Department on WARNING Please note there can be a risk in entering a strong magnetic field. You MUST contact the department on if any of the following apply: You have EVER had metal in your eyes You have a pacemaker, an artificial heart valve or aneurysm clips You have joint replacements or metal implants (including cochlea implants) You are pregnant You are over 18 stones in weight You require an interpreter (the use of family member or friend is not appropriate) Failure to contact the department about any of the above can result in substantial delay and/or a wasted journey. When you arrive in the department Please go to the reception desk where your details will be checked and you will be asked to take a seat in the waiting area. You will be asked to remove your clothing and put on hospital clothing (a top and trousers). You will be given a property bag for your clothing and personal items. Keep this with you at all times. During your scan, your belongings will be placed in a locker. You will be given a drink of Klean-Prep. This litre of fluid must be drunk quickly over minutes (approximately one cup every 6 minutes). This causes the small bowel to swell, which makes the image of the small bowel clearer during the scan. Once you have finished the drink, you will be taken to the scanning room. What happens during the MRI scan? The scan is undertaken by a radiographer. If you have any questions about the examination please do not hesitate to ask one of the staff. It usually takes approximately 30 minutes on the scanner. You will need to lie still while a radiographer takes the images. As we need to take pictures of your blood vessels we will need to give you a small injection in your arm. You may get a small bruise at the injection site. You may also be given an injection of Buscopan to relax the bowel. This helps to make the scan images clearer. You will be asked to lie on the scan table head-first. The table will then move into the scanner. It is important to lie still during the examination so that the images are not blurred. 3

4 The scanner makes a loud knocking noise. Earplugs or headphones will be provided. Some patients may experience a warming sensation during the scan, if you become uncomfortable please inform the staff immediately. The computer, which operates the MRI scanner, is in a separate room to keep it away from the magnetic field. This means that during a scan the radiographer or assistant practitioner will also be in this separate room. He or she will be able to see, hear and speak to you at all times during the procedure. There is a 2-way microphone within the scanner so that you will be able to talk to the staff. The staff will also be able to see you on a monitor and will provide you with an emergency buzzer. Who will be present during the scan? The radiographers will carry out your scan and may be assisted by radiographic assistants. Student radiographers and other clinical staff undergoing training may also be present in the room. If you would prefer them not to attend, please let the radiographer know. What happens after the scan? You will be able to leave the department after the scan. However, if you have had an injection you may be asked to wait minutes before leaving the department. You may return to your normal activities and eat and drink as normal You may experience blurred vision so we recommend that you do not drive for approximately 20 minutes after the examination. When will I get the results? The radiographer performing your scan will not be able to tell you the results. The results will be sent to the doctor or healthcare professional who referred you. You will be given advice on how to make a further appointment for the results Are there any risks or side-effects involved? MRI is a very safe procedure. There are no known side-effects associated with being exposed to the magnetic field and radio waves of an MRI scan. There are no risks from the magnetic field itself, but there are risks in taking metallic objects into the field. Some patients may experience a warming sensation during the scan, if you become uncomfortable please inform the staff immediately. All patients are asked a series of questions before their scan to eliminate these risks. See Warning box for details. Klean-Prep Klean-Prep may cause loose motions for a day or two. Klean-Prep can also cause nausea, and/or a feeling of fullness in your stomach and bloating, abdominal cramps, vomiting and soreness of the bottom. Rarely people are allergic to Klean-Prep and may get an itchy skin rash (nettle rash or hives). Any side-effects should not last long. Buscopan Buscopan can cause some dryness of mouth and blurring of vision. These side-effects have usually worn off by the time your scan has finished (15-20 minutes). 4

5 Injection of dye This dye that is given can have some side-effects such as, tingling, headache, nausea in 1% of patients. Very occasionally 1 in every 250 patients (0.4%) may experience a rash or flu-like symptoms. Is there an alternative to a small bowel MRI? Your doctor has decided that a small bowel MRI scan would be the most useful in your case. The examination will help your doctor to assess you more fully and plan any further treatment that might be necessary.
