1 Preparing for your prostate biopsy This leaflet contains information about how to prepare for your procedure and what to expect when you attend for your It is important that you read this leaflet carefully, even if you have had an ultrasound scan or biopsy before. If you are unable to attend your appointment, please telephone the department on Before you come to the department Is there any special preparation? YES. You will have been given a prescription for antibiotics. It is important that you take them according to the instructions provided with the tablets. If you take blood thinning tablets you will need to stop taking these before your procedure. 2 Can I take my prescribed medication? Please see the information above for blood thinning medication and high dose steroids. All other medications can be taken as usual. Do I need to bring anything with me? No. You may be asked to change into a hospital gown. Some patients prefer to bring their own dressing gown with them. Please do not bring any valuables with you. Can I bring a relative or friend with me? Yes, but we do not routinely allow friends or relatives into the scan room during the ultrasound examination. You will remain responsible for any dependants (such as young children) accompanying you to your The staff will not be able to look after them while you are having your procedure. When you arrive in the department Please go to the reception desk where your details will be checked and you will be asked to take a seat in the waiting area. You will be asked to remove your clothing and put on a hospital gown and your dressing gown if you have one. You will be given a property bag for your clothing and personal items. Keep this with you at all times. What happens during the procedure? A prostate biopsy is an ultrasound guided procedure where samples of your prostate are taken. The procedure is undertaken by a doctor who will explain the procedure to you. The doctor will be assisted by a nurse or a radiographic assistant. Please ask any questions that you might have. You will be given an injection of antibiotics (Gentamicin) into your buttock as part of the procedure. This is to reduce the risk of infection. To obtain the biopsy, an ultrasound probe will be inserted into your back passage to produce a picture which is used to guide a needle into your prostate. Following an injection of local anaesthetic, at least 10 small samples of your prostate are taken. Who will be present during the procedure? A doctor will carry out your procedure and may be assisted by a nurse or radiographic assistant. Student sonographers and other clinical staff undergoing training may be present in the room. If you would prefer them not to attend, please let a member of staff know at the time of your scan.

3 Are there any risks or side-effects involved? There are some risks associated with this procedure, which are: Pain - there may be some discomfort after the biopsy. Bleeding - it is common to get a little blood in your motions, urine or sperm. This is normal and should clear in up to 5 days (although the blood in your sperm may take longer to subside). Infection - this can cause a fever, flu-like symptoms or septicaemia. With the antibiotics you have been given, this occurs in less than 2% of biopsies. Retention of urine - difficulty passing water. Instructions about who to contact if you have any problems following the biopsy, are given on the following page. Is there an alternative to an ultrasound guided prostate biopsy? Your doctor has decided that prostate biopsy will be the most useful in your case. The examination will help your doctor to assess you more fully and plan any further treatment that might be necessary. If you would like more information about alternatives including not having the procedure, please speak to your doctor or the healthcare professional managing your care. What happens after the procedure? You will need to stay in the department for at least 30 minutes after the biopsy, firstly to recover from the procedure and secondly to pass urine before you can be allowed to go home. It is important that you are seen by as member of staff and tell them how you feel before going home.

4 DISCHARGE INFORMATION AND AT HOME ADVICE Following your prostate biopsy, you should rest for the remainder of the day and return to your normal activities gradually. You can eat and drink as usual. You can also drive, although you may prefer to have someone drive for you. There are 4 conditions that you should watch for: 1. Pain There may be some discomfort after the biopsy, this can usually be relieved by taking Paracetamol (follow the manufacturer s instructions and do not exceed the stated dose). If the pain becomes severe, or is not relieved by Paracetamol, please contact the Surgical Assessment Unit on for advice. 2. Bleeding Do not be alarmed if there is blood in your motions, urine or sperm. This is normal and should clear in up to 5 days. Blood in the sperm may take longer to subside (1-2 months). If there is a lot of blood in your motions or urine and it goes on longer than 5 days, or you pass any clots, please contact the Surgical Assessment Unit on for advice. 3. Fever/septicaemia If you have a fever with a temperature over 37ºC, or suddenly feel that you have developed flu within 10 days of the examination, please contact the Surgical Assessment Unit on for advice. 4. Retention of urine If you want to urinate, but are unable to do so after the biopsy, please contact the Surgical Assessment Unit on for advice. When will I get the results? The sonographer or doctor will not be able to tell you the results of your scan. The results will be sent back to the doctor or healthcare professional that referred you for your scan.
