Herbal Formulation Worksheet Part 1: Intention Setting a) What is the intention of your formula? (i.e. your why for creating it, and your intended outcome) b) What symptoms or health condition are you aiming to address? Limit yourself to 3 things, and be as specific as you can. If you have more than one, then prioritize what is most important (or the root cause, and what you should address first) c) Is there a major body/organ system(s) that your treatment will be targeted at? Is your formula meant to act primarily on the mental/emotional or physical body? d) Are you aiming to remove/change a symptom of dis-ease, or nourish/strengthen the body to prevent disease from occurring? Will your formula correct a specific physiological imbalance, or have a more tonifying effect? It is more important to know what kind of person has a disease than to know what kind of disease a person has - Hippocrates
Part 2: Choosing Herbs & Actions a) Which herbal actions will best address your intentions in Part 1. Challenge yourself to brainstorm as many as you can! b) Of the actions above, choose 3-5 that would best address your formula s intention, and give at least 3-5 herbs which are examples of these major or primary plant actions. Herbal Action Herbal Examples Important considerations to help prioritize making top choices for your formula: Are any herbs listed more than once as examples of your primary desired herbal actions? Ie. do some herbs overlap with multiple desired therapeutic effects? Do any herbs which were listed demonstrate tissue specificity towards a body/organ system which your formula is addressing? Are normalizers or effectors more indicated in your formula, and can you identify which herbal examples would be considered which? Can you more readily rationalize a plant s place in your formula based on its traditional/folk usage or any current clinical research? Does the herb have any ecological/environmental concerns (i.e. can it be cultivated locally or sustainably?) What does the herb taste like? What would be its primary sensory classification? What does your intuition tell you might be the best herb for the formula?
Part 3: Building your Formula Most formulas consist of: A primary or lead herb An adjuvant herb(s) that enhance or complement the action of the leading herb An herb (called the excipient) that is used to increase bulk An herb (called the corrigent) used to improve flavour or tolerance a) Choose 3-5 herbs that you will include in your formula, and list them in order importance to your blend (i.e. what is your leading herb? adjuvant?). Ask yourself If you could only give one herb, which would it be and why? b) For each herb, give their part used for medicine (i.e. root, leaf, flower), major sensory classification (i.e. aromatic, astringent, mucilaginous, bitter & nutritive), and at least 2 major active constituents: Herb Part Used Sensory Classification Major Constituents Considering part used, constituents, and the sensory experience will help guide what form of herbal pharmacy will be the best choice for your chosen herbs. The medicinal properties of any herb is not just the sum of the actions of the various constituents present. The method of preparation can destroy or lose part of the whole, and much of the plant s healing power can be lost. c) Note the majority of parts used and consider how they might be best applied (Would your herbal choices make an effective tea if they were all roots and seeds?) d) Note the major sensory experiences that will be elicited from your chosen herbs and consider how they might be best applied. (Would 5 bitter herbs be effective in a tea? Would mucilaginous herbs be best able to coat & soothe when given in a tincture? Will you suggest an herb to someone having never tasted it yourself before?)
e) What is known about the pharmacology of the major constituents in your chosen herbs? (i.e. what do we know about the biochemistry, mechanism of action, and/or solubility? Are your major constituents and/or medicinal properties going to be extracted readily into water, or will they need alcohol?) f) Decide on the form of herbal pharmacy that would be best application of your herbal choices (e.g. tincture, infusion, powder/capsules, topical, as food etc.) g) Take a moment to make a final decision on your choice of herbs. Do you feel good about your blend? Is anything missing or superfluous? Part 4: Safety a) For each of your chosen herbs, you should be able to answer the following questions: What are the possible signs of toxicity or an adverse reaction? If someone took too much, or had a negative response to the herb, what might they notice or feel? Does the herb have any known contraindications? When should you absolutely NOT use it? (note: these can be relative, or absolute) Are there any known interactions (drug or herbal) you should be aware of? If so, would they warrant avoidance, or monitoring alongside? Could co-administration potentially be beneficial? Are the interactions theoretical or absolute? Note that many of the concerns around herbs & safety are hugely theoretical (no evidential basis exists) and only in rare cases do adverse effects occur. However, First, do no harm should be taken seriously, and a sound herbal practitioner should always be aware of potential side effects, and err on the side of caution, especially in severe disease states or especially sensitive constitutions. Part 5: Dosing Principles a) Establish what would be the daily therapeutic dosing range for each of your chosen herbs, followed by the maximum daily dose, or quantity of herb wouldn t not want to exceed in a day. You may or may not use these numbers in your final formula, because as we combine herbs together, we harness the power of herbal synergy to amplify one herb s healing potential, however it s an important step in learning about the quantity of herb that is needed to ensure an adequate therapeutic effect. If you re formulating a tea, decoction, or powder use grams (1 tsp = approx. 3-5 grams). If you want to be certain, use your scale to measure exactly how many grams 1 tsp of each herb is first. If you re formulating a tincture, use mls, and ensure to also note the correct tincture ratio & percentage. For Example, Stinging Nettle leaf
Tea: 2 tsp/cup, 3-6 times per day, OR 6-10 grams/cup 3-6x/day = could take up to grams/day! For tincture: 5 ml, 3x/day (1:5, 30%) = could take up to 15 ml/day of this ratio strength Herb Therapeutic Dosing Range Max Daily Dose There is a synergy at work that acts to create a therapeutic whole that is more than the sum of its parts - David Hoffman What you want to take away from this exercise above is a general sense of which herbs can be given safely in larger quantities than others. These are the herbs you should consider including either as your leading herbs or excipients (bulking herbs) within the formula. b) Go back to considering your treatment intention, and before putting your blend together ask yourself a few more dosing questions How often, when, or what time of day will the herbs be taken? Morning, around meals, before bed? How long do you think the herbs will need to be taken to produce your desired effect? Is your blend meant to be taken in higher doses more acutely? In lower doses long-term? How will you know if the formula is working?? What signs and symptoms do you expect to see change that will tell you you ve made an effective formula? c) Decide the amount of final herbal product you are going to dispense. This will be slightly different for infusions vs. tinctures. For Tinctures: Common dispensing options are 50, 100 & 250 ml brown amber bottles. Tip: I generally like to start with 100 ml, as this is usually enough to ensure that by the time it s finished there has been some improvement in symptoms, without any adverse events. It s also a good time to check in again with the client, and refill, or change the formula if necessary.
1 tsp = 5 ml, therefore o A 50 ml bottle = 10 tsp doses o A 100 ml bottle = 20 tsp doses o A 250 ml bottle = 50 doses So, How many days will your tincture last if you dose it once, twice, three times a day? o A 100 ml bottle dosed as 1 tsp 3x/day = ml/day o Divide your total # mls (in this case 100 by the total # mls you will dose each day) o 100/ = à this is the # of days you will be able to give the herbs at your chosen dose. Is this going to be enough to produce your desired effects? If not what needs to be changed? For Infusions: Common dispensing options are 25, 50, and 100 grams, however this will greatly depend on your chosen herbs and their parts used for medicine. Note: I always encourage weighing out 5 grams of each of your chosen herbs individually before deciding on a total amount to dispense or blending your herbs together (roughly 25 grams total but this isn t that important yet). This is a fantastic visual learning opportunity, and will allow future infusions to be formulated quicker, and guard against making generalizations in regards to herbal quantities that make poor tasting teas (e.g. though well intentioned, it s very easy to overdo it with some herbs like lavender, licorice, peppermint etc.) and it will not always be the case that your primary or leading herb will be in the greatest quantity! A well chose excipient is often very important for a well-balanced herbal infusion. Mix your herbs around and get a feel and a smell for your blend. Now is the time to tweak amounts if you feel the need, adding a little more of an herb if desired, and noting the amounts added. Once you feel good about the quantities of each herb, if you re able, make a single cup using an approximation of 5 grams total per 1 cup water (may be slightly more or less depending on your herbs). Infuse 15 minutes. Take a final opportunity to tweak herbs/amounts Once pleased with your blend, confirm the total # of grams you have combined together. Now weigh 1 tsp and/or 1 Tbsp of your combined blend (this is usually around 2-7 grams, but again, will depend on your chosen herbs) Calculate how many grams you ll need to dispense total for a minimum 1 week supply at your desired dosing protocol. o For Example: if your dose was 1 Tbsp, 2x/day, and 1 Tbsp for your blend weighed a total of 4 grams o 4 g x 2 Tbsp = 8 g/day x 7 days = minimum of 56 grams
