3 Why Young Learners Should View this Program? We all know that marijuana is a dangerous drug. Marijuana use has been proven to change the chemistry in a person s brain and is extremely harmful to young, developing brains. Marijuana is a drug that is illegal for recreational use in most places. It has been legalized for medical purposes. This has caused confusion among many people as to the safety of marijuana. Many people believe that legal means safe, but that is far from the truth. Let s Talk About Marijuana presents the serious dangers of smoking pot to young learners before they become subjected to peer pressure and the temptation to smoke their first joint. By providing a realistic view of marijuana and how it can damage their brains and bodies is a good first step toward helping them avoid this potentially harmful drug. Learning Objectives learn that marijuana comes from the cannabis plant realize that marijuana joints contains THC and hundreds of other dangerous substances recognize that marijuana changes the chemical balance in a brain understand that marijuana is an addictive drug realize that marijuana impairs a person s ability to concentrate and learn understand that marijuana is an illegal recreational drug Let s Talk About Marijuana Mazzarella Media, Inc. 3
4 Summary of the Video The video program is presented in a documentary style. The documentary begins by showing that marijuana comes from a cannabis plant. and that a substance known as THC is the chemical that causes The program talks about both the immediate, short-term effects and longterm effects of smoking marijuana and using marijuana products. Colorful graphics and diagrams of the interior of the body show the various organs and bodily systems that are affected by the presence of marijuana smoke consumption. The video explains that the symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath, and throat irritations can occur. The program explains the factors that influence young people to start smoking, and explain that marijuana is addictive. Students will come to understand that people who use marijuana have difficulty with their memory, find it hard to concentrate, and have problems learning. The documentary concludes by highlighting and reviewing the information presented in the video. Preview Questions What do you know about marijuana? Why do you think people smoke marijuana? 6 Interdisciplinary Activities Language Arts Have your students do research and write or give a report the pros and cons of the legalization of marijuana for recreational use. And have other students do research on the the medical marijuana industry and the use of marijuana in the treatment of various diseases. Language Arts; Creative Expression Ask your students to write a public service announcement about the dangers of marijuana. Make sure they focus on one or two facts about marijuana. Students can perform it in front of the class or record it on video. Creative Expression Have your students create a poster based on the negative effects of smoking marijuana. For example, Are you too smart? Smoke marijuana! Get lower grades. Encourage students to have fun and be creative. They can work individually or in small groups.
