Problem: here is a disconnect between federal and state laws regarding legal marijuana use. Ci2zens are now forced to decide which laws to obey or disobey. ANALYI MARIX olu.on: he best answer is to pass legisla2on that allows state marijuana law to exist in harmony with federal law. Reward: A candidate that brings this popular issue to the forefront of their campaign will gain voters in a previously untapped market.
RENGH trengths 9 tates have marijuana Laws on Nov. 8 Ballot 54% of Americans support legal medical marijuana Marijuana vo.ng brought more men to 2012 Colorado elec.on 2014 Florida medical marijuana vote doubled the number of young voters 63% of Republican millennials support laws 77% of Democrat millennials support laws $6.7 billion legal marijuana industry bringing tax revenue, new business and jobs.
RENGH RENGH 9 tates have marijuana Laws on Nov. 8 ballot drawing new voters. 5 states for recrea2onal and 4 for medical. 25 states and the District of Columbia currently have laws allowing marijuana in some form as of May % of Americans support allowing medical marijuana upport is at 62 % among adults under 30, 56% among those aged 30 to 49, 49% among those aged 50 to 64 Marijuana vo2ng brought more men than women to 2012 Colorado elec2on. Polling shows rump does be6er with men. $6.7 billion legal marijuana industry brings tax revenue, new business development and jobs. Millennials 63% of Republican millennials and 77% of Democrat millennials support medical marijuana laws. Millennials that supported Bernie anders are not excited to vote for Clinton so may support rump if he adopts posi2on of federal law working with state laws to allow medical marijuana. aking a strong medical marijuana stance will help rump shore up millennial support. Florida 2014 Florida medical marijuana vote doubled the number of young voters. Law did not pass but it s2ll mo2vated young people to vote. Law failed by only 2% Floridians are gexng a second chance he Florida Medical Marijuana Legaliza.on Ini.a.ve, also known as Amendment 2, is on the Nov. 8 ballot as an ini2ated cons2tu2onal amendment. Medical marijuana advocates have put even more effort into gexng out the vote in November.
EAKNEE eaknesses upport may turn off Republican base and Evangelicals upport may be seen as pandering for votes rump has already said he would leave it up to the states so media could call this a flip-flop
EAKNEE EAKNEE upport may turn off Republican base and Evangelical Chris2ans that don t tradi2onally agree with benefits of medical marijuana. upport may be seen as pandering for votes since this posi2on would go against normal Republican candidate opinion. rump has already stated he would leave it up to the states so media could call this a flip-flop which could overshadow his support for federal law conforming with state laws. GP Plaaorm Republican delegates and leaders at the Na2onal Conven2on voted against adding medical marijuana to their plaborm. Reasons for this decision were based on unsubstan2ated claims that there was no quality research on benefits and risk. Addi2onally, some delegates were concerned that it causes schizophrenia or that the pro movement was funded by George oros. Evangelical Chris.an Views Results of a new survey conducted by the Public Religion Research Ins2tute show that 50 percent of Chris2ans aged said they favor or strongly favor allowing recrea2onal marijuana use. hen you consider all Chris2ans, though, 54 percent are against allowing marijuana use while 39 percent support it. However, Evangelicals really have no where else to go considering Hillary Clinton s radical proabor2on posi2on.
PPRUNIIE pportuni.es African-Americans show high favorability for allowing medical marijuana use. Increased tax revenue. Decriminaliza.on will reduce prison popula.on. he idea that fewer African-Americans will go to prison for drugs may bring out their vote $141.8 billion in illegal industry can be converted to legal Posi.on change may bring in anders supporters Current marijuana businesses will be able to have access to banking and health insurance.
PPRUNIIE PPRUNIIE African-Americans have high favourability for medical marijuana use. Increased tax revenue can be used to fight back alley drug sales and outh American drug cartels. Federal support will allow marijuana businesses to open legal bank accounts and provide their employees with health insurance. Decriminaliza2on will reduce prison popula2ons and save money. $141.8 billion in illegal marijuana sales can be converted to profits to American businesses, more real jobs and increased tax revenue. rump s support for federal conformity with state laws would give Bernie anders supporters a reason to vote for him that they can then defend to other Democrats. Bernie anders upporters Feel betrayed by Democrat party Ac2vely campaigned against Clinton Federal support of state laws may be the key point to mo2vate them to vote for rump. African-American Voters A dispropor2onate number of African-Americans are in prison on pe6y drug crimes. Decriminaliza2on will reduce the numbers sent to prison. ax revenue can be used in poor areas for drug educa2on programs and job opportuni2es to help African-Americans rise above poverty. rump s support of medical marijuana reform will show African- Americans that he is not like the stereo-typical Republican and encourage them to give him a chance.
PPRUNIIE HILLARY CLINN PIIN Hillary s current posi2on is that more research needs to be done before the Federal Government should reform the medical marijuana issue. Her posi2on is commonly seen as a stalking horse for the pharmaceu2cal industry. Referred to Colorado and ashington as laboratories of democracy. Clinton claims to be holding out on forming her opinion un2l she has the evidence from the two states. tates are not laboratories but are governed by laws that, by nature, are not experimental. Hillary s Connec.on to Private Prisons Unlikely to advocate for decriminaliza2on considering her significant 2es to the private prison industry. Hillary s campaign benefi6ed greatly from from the fundraising assistance of some closely connected to the private prison industry. Her campaign disclosed that Richard ullivan of Capitol Counsel un2l recently, a Raleigh, N.C.-based federally registered lobbyist for the for-profit prison operator GE Group bundled $69,363 in dona2ons for Clinton in the 4th quarter, bringing his total for the year to a whopping $274,891. Clinton has made a policy change that she will no longer accept prison dona2ons directly to her campaign but has made no effort to prevent dona2ons to her super PAC s. pportunity rump can use Hillary s marijuana posi2on to flank her to the len. rump already supports lexng the states decide whether or not to allow medical marijuana. He should now extend his policy to ensure federal and state laws do not conflict which weakens the rule of law and forces ci2zens to choose which law to obey.
HREA hreats Bringing out the marijuana vote could help Democrats more than rump Marijuana is still considered a schedule 1 drug
HREA HREA Encouraging the marijuana vote could be helping the Democrats. Marijuana is s2ll considered a schedule 1 drug by the Federal Government. If crime and addic2on rates dras2cally increase the blame could be placed en2rely on rump - hindering his chances of a second term. Crime Crime in Colorado has risen by 7% since legaliza2on. Possible causes may be due to the newness factor and the type of people moving to the state specifically because of legaliza2on. Federal support may help stabilize the crime rate by decreasing the concentra2on of criminals coming to one state. Democrat Advantage Marijuana support is tradi2onally a Democrat strong-hold Democrats will use marijuana s schedule 1 status to say rump supports allowing other schedule 1 drugs like heroin, LD and ecstasy. Democrats may say rump is more interested in votes and tax revenue than he is in the safety and well-being of our children.
