Supporting Practices to embrace Patient and Public Involvement Colin Smith Patient and Public Involvement & Equality and Diversity Development Manager September 2015

Background to this work Contract requirement guidance 2015/16 Patient participation previously an enhanced service scheme. Core aims of that service incorporated in to the contract as a new contractual requirement from 1 April Primary Care Co-Commissioning What is Co-Commissioning? During 2015/16, WCCG sharing primary care Commissioning with NHS England 2016 onwards delegated commissioning by WCCG of Primary Care* 2 September 2015

Primary Care Co-Commissioning What is Co-Commissioning? During 2015/16, WCCG sharing primary care Commissioning with NHS England 2016 onwards delegated commissioning by WCCG of Primary Care* 3 September 2015

Previous work with GPs around PPI Members (GPs) Development Programme Community and Seldom Heard group visits 4 September 2015

So, what are we doing in Wandsworth to enable practices to fully meet their contractual obligation? Set up a small working group Identify who wanted help and the consisting of PPI team, Healthwatch, nature of that. Locality managers and Patient What could be offered to practices in Group Chairs to steer the work and support identify what could be done Develop a programme of activity that The immediate work was to carry could be realistically delivered out an audit of where practices currently are with PPG Underpinning this was the understanding that at the end of the day Practices are independent contractors 5 September 2015

The Audit what we did Consisted of 4 elements Locality Managers asked patient groups themselves about their practice groups A search was done on practice websites to find out what practices were reporting about their PPI Activity A survey to identify if practices would like help and what were their needs A final check by staff to fill in any blanks 6 September 2015

The Audit what it told us and what we thought it meant Of the 42 practices in Wandsworth (across 3 localities) Size of the group ranged from 5 to 5,500+, with people attending face to face meetings from 3 50 although most attendances were 36 have patient groups between Groups meeting ranged from monthly(2), 6 19 of the groups reported staff attending with weekly (1), bimonthly (5), every 2-3 months 16 having GPs in attendance (7), quarterly (6), twice yearly (3), Annually (1), Information not available (11) Most meet face to face with a small number being virtual 20 groups reported that they attended locality patient forums To advertise and recruit, groups/practices used posters s, website, s, flyers etc. 7 September 2015

Areas of support requested 15 practices did not respond to this questionnaire; of the rest: 6 do not want support around PPI Of the remainder: 7 said they found PPI problematic 13 would like to have a discussion with the PPI team 10 would like help in bringing patients together 11 would like help in developing an Action Plan 8 would like help I setting up a focus group 2 had other (not stated) help requirements 8 September 2015

What we think we can offer to support Practice Groups in response Developing a good practice guidance sheet (what works well with patient groups), that practices and groups can pick from to aid them. The offer of meeting practices over a working lunch to discuss Building a rapport and working relationship with practice groups How might action plans be developed Working with existing locality patient groups to get their feedback and for them to input into solutions. Identify training that can be offered to patient representatives in this area. How else can people link into the wider patient involvement in health agenda? What might aid recruitment and retention 9 September 2015

And finally This is all set against the background alluded to in the first slide 2. Practices should not limit engagement to only having a PPG. Practices should look to promote innovative forms of patient participation to provide accurate feedback from all groups, and allow a better understanding of patients and carer needs 10 September 2015
