2 Fall Meeting Focuses on Zika Virus Update The Healthy Start Coalition of Hillsborough County s Annual Fall Meeting was held on September 9 at Stetson University Law Center in Tampa. The meeting focused on educating partner staff and community members on the Zika virus. Approximately 150 attendees learned from various speakers, including keynote speakers Ashlee Freemon and Dr. Robert Yelverton. Ashlee Freemon, an epidemiologist from the Florida Department of Health, provided an overview of current efforts to prevent, diagnose and treat the Zika virus. Dr. Yelverton, an OB/GYN for Women s Care Florida and a member of Healthy Start Coalition s Board of Directors, provided additional insight regarding Zika and its specific impact on women and infants. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) presented both the Healthy Start Coalition of Hillsborough County and the Healthy Start Coalition of Pinellas County with a check to support ongoing safe infant sleep efforts. 3 Healthy Start Finalizes Strategic Plan The Coalition is nearing the end of a lengthy community-based data-driven process to develop the Service Delivery Plan. This plan takes effect on November 1, 2016 and runs through October 30, It provides a comprehensive analysis of the current state of maternal child health in Hillsborough County as well as the Healthy Start service delivery system. and depression, alcohol tobacco and other drug use, short inter-pregnancy interval and maternal health. Key strategies will focus on implementation of intervention pathways during client services, expansion of social support strategies to include males and other family members, building collective impact in terms of expansion of community partnerships and addressing social determinants of health, addressing barriers to receiving services including medical care and family planning services, and addressing cultural issues and beliefs that impact utilization of family planning services and other supportive services. In the area of SUIDS, the following risk factors will be addressed: sleep position, sleep environment and bed-sharing. Strategies in this area will focus on the expansion of the Safe Baby program as well as social marketing messaging on safe sleep. Thanks to all of the community members who participated and donated hours of volunteer time to make this plan a success. Dr. Leisa Stanley, the Coalition s Associate Executive Director, lead the Plan Development Committee and strategic planning work groups through a final meeting on September 22nd to review and revise the key health indicators and community strategies for the plan. This plan will address prematurity and low birth weight and Sudden Unexpected Infant Deaths as the main risk factors for reducing infant mortality. In addition, additional research will be conducted during the plan s first year on fetal deaths and birth defects as emerging areas of concern. In the area of prematurity and LBW, the following risk factors will be addressed: maternal stress HSC Associate Executive Director Dr. Leisa Stanley reviews the Strategic Service Delivery Plan with input from Plan Development Committee members.

4 Healthy Start Coalition: Upcoming Trainings Interconceptional Care Training: 1 to 5 p.m. 2017: March 2, June 20 and September 14 Healthy Start Coalition of Hillsborough County offers this comprehensive curriculum based on the CDC s recommendations to conduct community education around interconception health care (ICC). ICC offers women information on personal wellness and the importance of being healthy prior to pregnancy to prevent poor birth outcomes. The newly revised ICC curriculum follows the U.S. Centers for Disease Control s required components on: Access to Care, Baby Spacing, Maternal Infections, Chronic Health Problems, Nutrition, Physical Activity, Environmental Risks, Mental Health, Smoking, and Substance Abuse. Safe Baby Training: 1 to 3 p.m. 2016: October 18 and November : March 8, June 14 and October 11 Safe Baby offers hospital and community-based education to teach parents about direct actions that they can take to protect their babies from the main causes of preventable infant deaths in Hillsborough County. Protective practices include how to choose a safe caregiver, prevent Shaken Baby Syndrome and promote safe sleep practices. The Safe Baby curriculum was developed by the Healthy Start Coalition of Hillsborough County based on American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations. Trainings are held at the Healthy Start Coalition of Hillsborough County at 2806 N. Armenia Ave. in Tampa. For more information or to register, please contact Nancy Hankin at nhankin@ hstart.org or Coordinated Intake and Referral Action Learning Collaborative Healthy Start Coalition of Hillsborough County was awarded a grant through MIECHV to participate in a 21 month learning collaborative to improve coordination and collaboration among community programs serving families with children 0-5 at both the state and local level. This Coordinated Intake and Referral Action Learning Collaborative is part of a statewide collaboration with seven other Healthy Start Coalitions throughout the state of Florida. The goal of the project is to link parents to the services and programs most appropriate to their needs and preferences. Community agencies working with families are partnering with Healthy Start Coalition to improve coordination of services. There are three workgroups within the collaborative: Family Engagement, Mobile App and Metrics. The Family Engagement Workgroup developed a survey to identify effective ways for to communicate with and engage with families in our community. The Mobile App workgroup is working on the development of a mobile app for both parents and service providers to identify the most appropriate services for families. The Metrics Workgroup created a survey for service providers to complete in order to develop common measures and collective data for the Healthy Start System of Care. Eight members of the learning collaborative attended a statewide meeting on September with other collaborative teams throughout the state. Representatives from the Healthy Start Coalition, Healthy Families, Parents and Teachers, Nurse- Family Partnership, Healthy Start and Federal Healthy Start programs attended. The team presented a poster presentation on each workgroup s progress.

5 Inaugural Certified Safe Baby Training Held on August 30 The Healthy Start Coalition of Hillsborough County held its very first Certified Safe Baby training on August 30 in Tampa. The Certified Safe Baby Training is a social entrepreneurship project resulting from the business plan competition process offered in 2015 by the Children s Board of Hillsborough County. After winning second place in the competition, the Safe Baby team created the certified curriculum to create more Safe Baby trainers in communities throughout Florida and beyond to reduce preventable infant deaths related to unsafe caregivers, abusive head trauma, co-sleeping and unsafe sleep environments. A sold out class of 25 attendees spent the day learning how to teach Safe Baby from trainers from the Healthy Start Coalition. Certified Safe Baby Trainer Healthy Start Coalition of Hillsborough County To register for the next Certified Safe Baby Training, please visit com/e/certified-safe-baby-trainer-trainingtickets Safe Baby Presented at 15th International Conference on Shaken Baby Syndrome/Abusive Head Trauma (AHT) HSC Director of Community Outreach Lisa Colen and Community Outreach Manager Jessica Reynolds traveled to the conference in Montreal to present Safe Baby Plus: Integration of Developmental Screening into a Prevention Program on September 25th. Lisa and Jessica shared Safe Baby information and learned with professionals who are dedicated to the prevention of AHT throughout the world. They met with successful program creators Dr. Ronald Barr from the Period of Purple Crying program and Dr. Mark Dias from the Pennsylvania Shaken Baby Syndrome Prevention Program to share successes and challenges of implementing a broad-based prevention program. Lisa and Jessica have also been invited to speak at the American Public Health Association (APHA) Conference in Denver in late October.

6 Top 10 OB Practices in offering the Healthy Start Screen to Patients July Tampa OB/Exodus Tampa Family Health Centers Tampa General Hospital, Genesis Suncoast Community Health Centers OB/GYN Associates Women s Care Premier OB/GYN Partners OB/GYN OMNI Medical for Women Women s Health and Wellness 26 Dr. Atef Zakhary and staff of Omni Medical Center for Women Healthy Families Hillsborough is happy to announce their participation in a new enhancement service as part of Healthy Families Florida. During the 2016 Legislative Session, the Florida Legislature allocated an additional $1.9 million to Healthy Families Florida in order to expand and enhance services. At the direction of the Department of Children and Families (DCF), HFF developed a dual-model approach to enhancing the program. The purpose of the enhancement is to improve access to treatment for HFF participants experiencing substance abuse, mental health and domestic violence challenges. The model includes development of a family specialist program and a behavioral healthcare navigator program. HF Hillsborough applied for and received funding for a Behavioral Health Navigator position. The navigator does not provide direct clinical services to families. Instead, the navigator assesses the family s needs, develops a referral plan, coordinates referrals and conducts follow-up as HFF participants receive services from community providers. Healthy Families Hillsborough has contracted with Success 4 Kids & Families to provide this service. Gina Montijo, formerly a Family Resource Coordinator at Tampa General Hospital, was hired to fill this position. She will be working with four of the Healthy Families teams located in North Tampa and South County.
