3 FORE WORD Greetings from STEPS Serve Train Educate People s Society was founded in 1993 at Srikalahasti in Chittoor district, Andhra Pradesh state and completed 22 years of existence in providing health services.the rapidly changing development scenario has placed more responsibility on STEPS. The progresses of the various programs are satisfactory. We are thankful to Andhra Pradesh Government departments, Andhra Pradesh Aids Control Society, Vasavya Mahila Mandali, Vijaywada, Global Giving. We are also thankful to Collector, DM&HO Chittoor district, Local Municipal and Revenue officials for the support and encouragement at several interventions. The development dialogue pursued enhanced capacity building through launching net work agencies for meaningful intervention. STEPS became member and developed network, partnership with number of International Organisations. The STEPS since 22 years conducted several free Medical and Health camps, Awareness camps, Training programs for women groups and support groups in the slums of Srikalahsti and surrounding villages. We are grateful to those from whom we have received support and recognition for implementing several health and welfare programs. STEPS continued its work in the field of health, mainly concentrating on HIV/AIDS, TB, Malaria, Filariasis, Cancer, Diabetes, other Infectious diseases and Human Rights. 4 About STEPS Serve Train Educate People s Society (STEPS) established in the year 1993 as a non-profit, non-governmental, voluntary organization at Srikalahasti a famous Pilgrim town in Chittoor District, Andhra Pradesh state, India. It is legally accredited with Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860 of Government of Andhra Pradesh. Registered under FCRA 1976 Ministry of Home Affairs, Tax Exemption under 12A and 80G (All contributions to STEPS are exempt under Section 80(G) of the Income Tax Department, Govt of India. Its head office at Srikalahasti has been working since 1993 with a commitment to rouse rural and urban poor, make them better living and participation in action for all round development. The president of STEPS who is a Medical Doctor acting as chief functionary. All programmes are headed by volunteers and development facilitators with participation and involvement of peoples committees. This NGO gives special emphasis on Medical and health aspects of those particularly preventive and curative health related programmes with a special focus on children, Adolescent girls and boys and Women with more specifically emphasis on strengthen and expand HIV/AIDS & Malaria clinical services, awareness and advocacy services, integrated child health and education to the needy. Vision The Vision of the society is to become centre of excellence in the field of medical and Health, Women empowerment, child development, Human rights and environment related programs through innovations particularly for the marginalized by engaging into partnership with national and international agencies Mission To provide better future to the most vulnerable women, children of those particularly deprived sections by protecting their health needs and rights particularly women s reproductive health providing education, environment and improving their living conditions with an integrated approach. 8 STEPS COMPOSITE TARGET INTERVENTION Supported By Andhra Pradesh State AIDS Control Society(APSACS) Implementing STEPS NGO Two Targeted Interventions one is in Srikalahasti, Thottambedu, Satyavedu, and Varadaiahpalem mandals, another Target Intervention in Nagari Nindra Pichatoor and Puttur supported by APSACS working with key population of Female Sex Workers(FSWs), Male Sex with Male (MSMs), by developing enabling environment and providing STI treatment, basic HIV care, Creating awareness about STI, HIV/AIDS Goal To contribute the reduce spread and impact of HIV in Andhra Pradesh through empowerment of key population to manage sustainable community level responses. 10 Introduction: Chittoor District is a one of the fast growing District among the Rayalaseema Districts in Andhra Pradesh with Special economic zones, industries, tourism, agriculture, real estate and other business. The district has vulnerable conditions such as unawareness on social problems and low level literacy rate and poor health & sanitary conditions. Extreme poverty is one of the major problems in this district. Agriculture is the main occupation of the people of the district. STEPS organization is involved in TI intervention since April, 2004 in Chittoor District. The Project has been operating with a goal to halt and reverse the epidemic in HIV/AIDS Infection among the HRGs in 4 mandals under STEPS Srikalahasti project. 12 Strategies and Components of TI : BCC (Behavior change communication): We have found that the strategy adapted under BCC was effective. where the Peer Educator communication abilities were inadequate. In the Current year we having the 9 Outreach workers and 36 peer educators in 7 sites with 73 hotspots for giving the outreach services. Peer Educator are meet the HRGs regularly at there hotspots to create awareness on STI, HIV/AIDS and project services. In this field visits PEs are distributing the condoms as per the demand of the HRGs. 20 Enabling Environment: Target Intervention is promoting the enabling environment to the HRGs to avail the services given by the Project and government to escape from the stigma and discrimination through advocacy meetings, legal awareness, legal services and adopting the social entitlements. TI is involving in the all the aspects of the community desires and needs. TI is promoting the community based organizations to bonding the HRGs to solve there issues with there own. 32 STEPS VMM TAP PROGRAMME About Our Lead partner Vasavya's activities reach all over Andhra Pradesh. During the last three decades under the dynamic leadership of Mrs.Chennupati Vidya, Former member of Parliament, VMM has grown as a pioneer service organization. Today VMM is extending services to more than 2,000,000 people, spread over rural and urban Andhra Pradesh. The Strategy of Vasavya is to work with a network of NGO'S as well as individuals, in a participatory way and to empower them to work towards a better Social, economic and cultural environment. The activities of VMM led by three dynamic personalities, Mrs.G.Rashmi Samaram, Graduate in Science, Trained at Birmingham University, U.K in Managing Rural Development, Sustainable Management. Mrs.B.Keerthi, Professional Social worker, Diploma in Social Development from Coady International Institute, Canada, Monitor and resource person for Government and NGO Sector. Dr(Mrs). P. Deeksha M.B.B.S DD, Medical Director PSH Certificate course on Family Physician as counselor on Torture survivors conducted by IMA & AK Sinha Institute. They are highly qualified with lot of experience in implementing the programmes. We are very much thankful to Vasavya Mahila Mandali for having confidence on STEPS by giving opportunity to work as implementing programmes. NGO partner in different

34 TAP program Activities Apl-2014 to Mar Implementing the TAP Program in Venkatagiri and Pellakuru mandals in Nellore district supported by Lead Partner Vasavya Mahila Mandali, Vijayawada funding from,tb alert UK Providing services to the underserved communities who are infected and affected by TB, HIV/AIDS and Co-Infection in Andhra Pradesh. TAP Programme Activities Referrals to ICTC and DMCs During this year our staff members motivated and referred 436 TB symptoms suspected Peoples to DMC and 298 Community peoples were referred to ICTC & PPTCT centers in 2 Mandals. After starting of TAP program DMC and ICTC referrals increased. We are formation of Adult support groups, Childrens support groups, Grannies club To the End of this programme March-2015 to continue the referrals to support groups Activities: Awareness meetings 216 Awareness meetings at their target areas during Created awareness about TB, HIV & Co-infection and Nutritional food, personal hygiene and sanitation among the people at grass root level. Mass events Conducted 24 Mass Events at their target areas during this year.during these Events explained about TB, HIV & Co-Infection.Nutritional food and personal hygine and

35 sanitation and Health accepts to the Political Leaders, Teachers,Community People, SHG Leaders and Members,studentd,childrens have participated in this Events. Community Core Group Meetings Conducted 4 community core group meetings in their target areas. Political leaders, Area ANMs, Asha volunteers, Anganwadi workers, Teachers and SHG Leaders have involved in this group meetings. Because of the involvement of group members in our program activities, they are referring suspected persons to the testing centers. Cultural Shows Organized 6 Cultural Shows at Venkatagiri and Pellakuru mandals during this year. In this plays the participants prepared script to explain about the symptoms of TB, HIV and Co-Infection. Observational days STEPS conducted World AIDS Day, TB Day, Children Day, and Women s Day & International Candle light day. All the TAP staff participated in the programs. During these events explained about the importance of the day and the social responsibility of Community people. Adult support groups TAP staff motivated adults to form support groups. Till today 16 Adult Support Groups were formed 12 at Venkatagiri and 4 at Pellakur mandal. During monthly meetings explaining about the symptoms of TB and HIV, Health accepts social responsibility of group members and also how to refer the suspected persons to the testing centre. Children support groups 4 Children Support Groups were formed, 3 Support group at Venkatagiri and 1 group at Pellakur mandal. Conducted monthly meetings regularly. In this meeting they were explained about the symptoms of TB and HIV, personal hygiene the social responsibility of group members and also explained about how to refer the suspect persons to the testing centre.

36 Grannies club One Grannies club were formed at Venkatagiri. Conducted monthly meetings regularly. In this meeting they were explained about the symptoms of TB and HIV. the social responsibility of group members and also explained about how to treat their grand children. Formation and running of Health Forum One Health Forum were formed at CHC-Venkatagiri. Conducted Half yearly meetings regularly. In this meeting we explained about our program activities and also discussed with advocacy issues and reach our target to Health Forum Members. District level PAC meetings Conducted District Level PAC Meeting at District Officers, Nellore. In this meeting we explained about our program activities and ask suggestions from District level Government Officials to develop TAP program. Networking meeting with NGO/CBOs/PHPs at mandal level Conducted Networking meeting with NGO/CBOs/PHPs at District level. PD Dr.Prameelamma explained about our program activities and requested their feedback and suggestions for effective implementation of TAP program. Review meetings with district & state TB and HIV officers Conducted Review meeting with district TB and HIV officers at DTCO Office, Nellore all the STEPS TAP staff participated in the meeting. They gave briefing about the activities and performance during the year. The district officials gave some suggestions to improve the TAP program activities in two mandals.

42 Global Giving-Lymphatic Filariasis (LF) Disease Treatment Providing treatment,medicines to Filariasis patients with the support from donors from USA through Global giving. Beneficiary Filariasis patients and the slums which require immediate health attention are identified. selected 20 deserving Filariasis patients for treatment and 4 slums for conducting health camps. Patients for treatment and slums for conducting health camps were selected based on the following criteria: At present 3 Health Workers and 1 medical Officer are involved in providing treatment and awareness services to LF patients. We have developed Individual Recording Form and Individual Follow-up Form. In Individual Recording Form the LF sufferer s name, sex, age, address and Health Worker s name will be recorded. In this form the Health Worker will record the body part which is attacked with Filariasis and intensity of the disease. In Individual Follow-up Form each LF sufferer will be followed up monthly to find out any acute attack have occurred and how many have occurred in a month, there have been any wounds, skin damage or swelling, there have been an improvement in condition. For each Lympatic Filariasis patient we have kept separate file. During beginning of every month, each patient will be provided with drugs for 30 days. STEPS NGO organizing medical camps for Filariasis patients. The Health Workers are visiting the houses of patients once in 15 days and monitoring their health status.

43 Malaria Prevention, Treatment & awareness Malaria is prevailing in most of the villages surrounding Srikalahasti. Organizing free Medical camps in the malaria affected villages regularly and extending clinical services to them. The District Health authorities have nominated STEPS President in the committee to supervise the activities of malaria eradication programs in this area. Creating awareness among people in urban slums and rural areas to keep their surroundings clean and hygiene to prevent breeding of mosquitoes which causes Malaria. Cancer, Diabetes Screening and awareness Organizing Cancer awareness and detection camps, diabetes screening camps in the slums of Srikalahsti and surrounding villages. Identifying the people suffering with Cancer and diabetes and referring them to referral hospital for treatment. LEGAL ASSISTANCE AND COUNSELLING CELL FOR WOMEN: STEPS in association with Mandal legal literacy authority and local lawyers organizing legal literacy camps in its target villages with a special focus to extend legal assistance and knowledge to the deprived women. The President of STPES as a member of Lok Adalat, Srikalahasti have settled many cases by arbitration. Counseling services were initiated to guide, support and resolve the problems being encountered by the women at home like Violence, exploitation, gender bias, dowry death etc. The chief functionary of STEPS as a president of women vigilance cell, Srikalahasthi solving problems of women in different situations and giving necessary guidance and legal assistance.
