2 Message from the Chairperson Greetings from STEPS The rapidly changing development scenario has placed more responsibility on STEPS. The progresses of the various programmes are satisfactory. We are grateful to the donors for the understanding and support we have received from them by way of funding. We are also grateful to the government departments from whom we have received support and recognition We are thankful to the International HIV/AIDS Alliance, Clinton Foundation, Vasavya Mahila Mandali, Vijaywada for providing funding and guidance. We are also thankful to Department of Health and family welfare, Government of Andhra Pradesh, Collector, DM&HO Chittoor district, Local Municipal and Revenue officials for the support and encouragement at several interventions. The development dialogue pursued enhanced capacity building through launching net work agencies for meaningful intervention. STEPS became member and developed network, partnership with number of International Organisations. On behalf of the executive committee I would like to record my appreciation of the diligence commitment of STEPS staff at all levels for their dedication and hard work during implementing different programmes. A special word of appreciation must go to CBO members for their whole hearted support for promotion of human development in different activities. 3 About STEPS Serve Train Educate People s Society (STEPS) established in the year 1993 as a non-profit, non-governmental, voluntary organization at Srikalahasti a famous Pilgrim town in Chittoor District, Andhra Pradesh state, India. Its head office at Srikalahasti has been working since 1993 with a commitment to rouse rural and urban poor, make them better living and participation in action for all round development. The president of STEPS who is a Medical Doctor acting as chief functionary and to share her responsibility one Executive Director has been nominated to facilitate administration and implementation of programmes. All programmes are headed by volunteers and development facilitators with participation and involvement of peoples committees. This NGO gives special emphasis on Medical and health aspects of those particularly preventive and curative health related programmes with a special focus on children, Adolescent girls and boys and Women with more specifically emphasis on strengthen and expand HIV/AIDS & Malaria clinical, awareness and advocacy services, integrated child health and education to the needy. Organization of women into groups and to promote grass root level initiation for their empowerment. Safe guards human rights in the form of equal rights for children, women, and adolescents with right to live with dignity and universal right on common resources with grass root level initiations. 3

4 Vision : The Vision of the society is to become centre of excellence in the field of medical and Health, Women empowerment, child development, Human rights and environment related programmes through innovations particularly for the marginalized by engaging into partnership with national and international agencies Mission: To provide better future to the most vulnerable women, children of those particularly deprived sections by protecting their health needs and rights women s reproductive health, providing education, environment and improving their living conditions with an integrated approach. We believe that good health, well being and access to affordable health services are fundamental human rights. Strategies: To provide medical aid in rural and urban slums and to organize the programmes of sanitation, health and maternity services and trains the organizers at the village level. To undertake disease control programmes like HIV/AIDS, Malaria, TB, Cancer, Leprosy To undertake environmental pollution control programmes, slum clearing programmes, tree plantation, agriculture, social forestry and nursery. To start vocational and income generation training canters and organizing self help groups in rural and urban slums to uplift poor community for their sustainable development. To organize orphan homes, child care canters, crèche canters, day care canters and street children programme and to start rehabilitation canters for the physically handicapped children. To collaborate with other institutions, associations and societies in India and Abroad interest in similar objects. Our Strategies for Change: If the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are to be met and sustained, we must rapidly move towards the goals of Promote gender equality and empower women (Goal 3), Reduce child mortality rates (Goal 4), Improve maternal health (Goal 5, Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases( Goal 6).We believe that if adequate opportunities are available, along with equal opportunities, people from socio-economically weaker sections of the community need guidance and support to utilize these opportunities effectively. 4

16 Identification of Key Populations: New identification of Key populations is the regular process in these interventions. When ever new KP enters in to sex work the Outreach staff will identify and brought forward to the project services. 22 Support Group Meetings Monthly formal support group meetings conducted in Srikalahasti and Puttur. During Monthly support group meeting created awareness to PLHAs on Health issues and nutrition values. Not only management staff and also by PLHAs who is under ART we used to tell this past history and present history Community Based Organizations Strengthened existing Community Based Organizations (CBOs) Akshaya Association (MSM CBO) and Sree Shakthi Sangam (FSW CBO). Member ship increased from 154 to 232 members in Akshya Association and from 194 to 273 members in Sree Shakthi Sangam. CBOs are actively involved in Project planning, Monitoring, Advocacies, and decision making. 13 CBO meetings conducted in all the sites. 22

24 STEPS-VMM CLINTON FOUNDATION PEDIATRIC AIDS INITIATIVE PROGRAMME Implementing the Project in Srikalahsti supported by Lead Partner Vasavya Mahila Mandali, Vijayawada funding from Cliniton Foundation, USA. Providing services to the children who are infected by HIV. Areas covered 32 urban slums in Srikalahasti Municipality, Chittoor District, Andhra Pradesh. Total number of CLHAs reached - 11 Boys - 5 Girls - 6 Objectives Strengthen the support systems for children infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. Physical and mental health needs of the PLHA and their children need to be identified and dealt with. Poverty alleviation programs should be executed through the community based organizations. Community based organizations should ensure that the children are working in child friendly environments and not being exploited at their workplace. Orientation regarding foster family members. Constant support should be available to enhance the quality of care rendered to foster children. Monitoring mechanisms should be developed to ensure the quality of care rendered. Best Model of foster care practice should be identified and up scaled. Providing quality treatment for the CLHAs. 24

25 1. Out Reach Conducted field survey in Srikalahasti by the Project staff. The field staff met the Mandal Prajaparishath Staff, Urban Health staff, Municipal Councilors and staff, Self Help Group Members, Mahila Aarogya Sangam Members, ICDS Project staff, Anganwadi workers and explained the activities of STEPS VMM CHAI Programme and requested them to cooperate for the implementation of the programme. Once in week PD, PC and ORW conducting the home and school visits. VMM PO & STEPS Staff Home Visits 2. Nutritional support for CLHAS Awareness created for the CLHAS and their parents about the importance of Nutrition and explained about the preparation of low cost nutritional food. Each CLHA is provided Nutritional support on Monthly basis. They were given 5 Kgs rice, 2Kgs Dhall, 1 Kg Jagari, 30 Groundnut Protein Powder Box, 1 kg Raagi malt, 1 liter Oil, Milk powder and frouts. 26 3. Clinical Services: Dr.P.Prameelamma Project Director and Medical Director providing Clinical services to the CLHAs for Opportunistic Infections. Providing free medicines during the medical camps. Medical camp in rural slum areas 4. Educational support School bags, Books, Pad, Pencils, Pens, Uniforms and Geometric Boxes were provided by STEPS NGO. Distributing books to the Affected Children 5. Psychosocial support Reduced the self stigma by giving Counseling to CLHAs and their family members and involving CLHAs in recreational activities. STEPS VMM PD with HIV infected children 26

29 STEPS-VMM-EDC-FORMAL EDUCATION Supported By DEUTSCHE BANK, THAILAND Implementing the program in Srikalahasti and Thottambedu mandals supported by lead partner Vasavya Mahila Mandali, Vijayawada, funding from DEUTSCHE BANK, THAILAND. Providing Education Support, Encouraging the children to continue their education and providing the socio-economic support to children who are affected with HIV with the support of STEPS-VMM-EDC program. Selection criteria The children for this STEPS-VMM-EDC-Formal Education Programme were selected based on the following criteria. The children should come from infected families. The children will be selected from the families of a single parent and they will be provided with School fees, Books, 2 pairs of Uniforms, Stationary. Children support groups were formed by combining affected children with the general children Organizing recreational activities for the children and taking the children for picnics twice in a year. Encouraging the children to participate in all the activities and programs conducted by the organization. Required documents - Xerox copies of Ration card /VCTC Reports / ART monthly Reports/Death certificates of the parents/ children should be submitted. The identification of the stake holders was done with the help of ORWs in the field visits areas through HCBCS Project. 30 Formation of school support groups The students were encouraged to form school support groups. The school support groups consists of students from HIV infected and affected, Orphans and general population. Up to now 12 Support groups were formed. Up to now 120 visits were conducted and during this home visits explained to the parents of affected children about personal hygiene and motivating their children to attend the school regularly. Distribution of Science Apparatus STEPS VMM DB Programme have donated Scientific Apparatus for school children in M.H.School, Baskar Peta, Srikalahasti. The Teachers have received the apparatus from STEPS VMM staff. Now all the children were provided with necessary bags, books and stationary for attending the school. The affected children are participating in all the organization programs. With the formation of school support groups and continuous monitoring of their activities leads to the unity of the affected and general children. By providing socio economic support through the organization they are concentrating on studies to achieve their aspirations. 32

33 NFE LITERACY PROGRAMME This program was conducted to create awareness about the importance of education to the HIV infected and affected families. Motivated them to send their children to school and providing tuition fees and the necessary support to continue their education. Provided educational support to 10 affected children and arranging remedial classes to the children to continue education with out break. Activities The children of the infected families were identified by the ORW during their field visits. The Project Director, Project coordinator and CCG during their field visits met the family members and giving counseling for sending their children to the school. The awareness created among them about the importance of education. Explained about supportive services of the organization to the families. Motivating children to join in the coaching center and paying the necessary fees for the coaching through STEPS VMM EDC NFE Programme. 24 affected children below 16 years were admitted in the VEDHA COACHING CENTER at Srikalahasti. Regular monitoring of the program is conducted by the PD,PC and CCG. Project Director with NFE Children Out come Now the children are coming regularly to the NFE institute and studying well. By providing necessary support to the NFE children by the organization all of them developed interest in education and attended the school regularly. All the 20 children have passed with good marks. The children of NFE are actively participated in the other programs of the STEPS organization. Through the NFE children will join for formal education programs at schools and colleges. NFE - VOCATIONAL TRAINING CENTER Conducted this program to improve the economic status of 25 women and empower women/adolescent girls through vocational training for improve the livelihoods of the low income families by providing training in Tailoring. The selection of the members for the vocational training was based on The level of education 5th - 10th pass or fail The children from HIV/infected/single parent/double parent orphan families. 33

34 The program was started from January members have attended the vocational training. The duration of training program is two hours per day in 6 months STEPS VMM DB NFE Vocational Tailoring Training Program (Non Formal Education) Out come Through the vocational training the participants learned the Embroidery, Tailoring and Arya work. Now the trainees can stitch their neighbors and own garments By enhancing and developing their skills, they started establishing their own business and start earning money which leads to their poverty reduction, women empowerment. COMPUTER TRAINING 10 members attending Computer Training program in C.S.Computer Training center. After the training they will be more benefited. Computer Training Program Out come Prashanth, Hemalatha, Harika, Saikumar and Sk.Roshini have 6 months Computer training from 1st June, The students developed their computer skills. After completion of this course some of them are joining in DTP and computer centers to work on part time basis. 34

35 STEPS URBAN HEALTH CENTRE STEPS Society is running urban health centre in the slums of the Srikalahasti Municipality covering a population of funded by Dept of Health and Family welfare, Govt of Andhra Pradesh, INDIA. The leaders of the MAS are member in the UHC advisory which will frame working guidelines and suggestions for function of the Urban Health Centre. 39 MALARIA ERADICATION PROGRAMME Malaria is prevailing in most of the villages surrounding Srikalahasti. DR P. Prameelamma has surveyed Malaria prevailing areas and treatment was given to them and free medicines were distributed. Conducting free Medical camps in the malaria affected villages regularly and providing clinical services to them. Creating awareness in urban slums and rural areas to keep their surroundings clean and hygiene to prevent breeding of mosquitoes which causes Malaria. They were provided with mangala suthras and other requirements and providing food for all the people who attend this occasion. LEGAL ASSISTANCE AND COUNSELLING CELL FOR WOMEN STEPS in association with mandal legal literacy authority and local lawyers organized several legal literacy camps in its target villages with a special focus to provide legal assistance and knowledge to the deprived section. The President of STPES as a member of Lok Adalat, Srikalahasti have settled many cases by arbitration. Counseling services were initiated to guide, support and resolve the problems being encountered by the women at home like Violence, exploitation, gender bias, dowry death etc. The chief functionary of STEPS as a president of women vigilance cell, Srikalahasti solved many problems of women in different situations.
