6 Who Took the Survey in 2007? 234 People Total 2 out of 3 were women 2 out of 3 were Afro Am 4 out of 5 finished high school 3 in 4 were renters 15 took it in Spanish

12 More Satisfied with City Response to Blight* (trash, dumping, abandoned cars, weeds, neglected land or buildings) About 2 out of 5 people called the City to complain about blight. (Same as in 04) 65% of people were satisfied with the City s response. This is higher than in 04 (55%)

17 Reduced Blight Neighborhood Clean Ups Community Gardens Pedestrian Safety Bulbouts

18 Reduced Blight 143 nuisance properties were abated 16 homes were renovated through Rebuilding Together Oakland (RTO) 3 liquor stores stopped selling alcohol, 1 corner store is now selling fresh produce Cal Tech Toxic Waste Site was demolished Residents wrote letters to officials to clean it up State is ready to begin clean up with ongoing pressure from residents

19 Durant Park Renovation Friends of Durant Park Got permanent garbage cans and lighting from City Created architectural plans for continued improvement with community input 200+ people annually attend the Friends of Durant Park Halloween Party Other events held in park throughout the year

25 Views About Crime Fewer people in 2007 (34%) felt that the neighborhood was a safe place to live than in 2004 (45%) Over the past year, most people did not see a decrease in: crime/violence drug activity nuisance activities around liquor stores About 1 in 4 called the police to report crime Only 1 in 3 were satisfied with the police response to their call

27 2007 Oakland Youth Movement (OYM) Survey in West Oakland Youth wrote, gave & analyzed the survey Used some of the same questions as adult survey Filled out by 100 WO youth ages at various events OYM presents and talks about their own results
