Introduction As Chair of YoungMinds it remains a privilege to work with an energetic and committed team of staff, volunteers and trustees who share a passion for achieving our mission. Sarah Brennan, YoungMinds Chief Executive, and her team have been extremely effective in advancing our policy work by nurturing excellent working relationships with Ministers from all political parties, key government departments, professional bodies and associated organisations. Youth Engagement work is central to YoungMinds and the launch of the exciting new campaign, YoungMinds Vs, received much media coverage and support. It continues to go from strength to strength with young people mobilising across the country, attracting both celebrity and policymaker support. Working with and helping parents is also crucial to improving children and young people s mental health, services and family life. This year, we commissioned an external evaluation of the Parents Helpline, which revealed what a lifeline this service is for families and the difference it makes. We are hopeful that our new fundraising campaign will secure its long term future. There have been gains in children and young people s mental health, but this is an important election year. My thanks go to everyone supporting YoungMinds work. Please keep helping us to ensure we can continue transforming the lives of thousands of children and young people across the UK. Carole Easton Chair of YoungMinds Mission YoungMinds mission is to improve the emotional resilience and mental health of children and young people throughout the UK by informing and actively engaging with children, young people, parents, carers, policymakers and professionals. Until I found out about YoungMinds...they gave me a voice and spoke about things that were on my mind. Since the beginning of year eleven, I felt pressured to have the top grades and to be the best. If I didn t, I would be a failure. It got me down. I would self-harm to deal with the stress. I can now breathe a little bit better knowing that people do relate to me. I am so grateful that a charity like yours exists, willing to help young people like me. A 17 year old girl 02 03
Making young voices heard Youth Engagement YoungMinds is the voice for young people s mental health and wellbeing. We work in partnership with young people, pushing their experiences to the forefront of policy making in children and young people s mental health and delivering meaningful and transformative participation in CAMH services across England. Here are just some of the ways young people are making a difference: young advisors led research into how young people could be more involved in the work of the British Psychological Society and presented their findings at a national conference. a group of young people are shaping a participation strategy for NHS England for the involvement of young people in the design of CAMH inpatient services. the development of a Mental Health Young Leaders course. helped develop a young people s participation group in mental health research at Durham University. As a mental health campaigner I was excited to get together and work with an organisation whose purpose is to do everything that I am passionate about; support people and tackle stigma head-on by challenging pre-set perceptions. Only by tackling stigma will we ever truly implement change... Moving forward I cannot wait to continue to work with YoungMinds as I really feel like I have found an organisation who stands for the same thing as me. As I said it s amazing how much you can change, or learn, in a short space of time. Tom, London Vs Activist Change UR Mind, a local mental health youth board for the North East, supported by YoungMinds, celebrated after picking up the Health and Wellbeing Award at this year s National Council for Voluntary Youth Services (NCVYS) Young Partners Awards. The group also launched an anti-stigma campaign called Labels are for Products Not People which focuses on raising awareness around stigma and mental health. Young people s talents and experiences are essential to everything we do at YoungMinds. We know that our campaigning, fundraising, communications and training are more effective when we deliver them hand-in-hand with young people who have lived experience of the issues we are working on. We would like to thank each and every one of the 5,600 plus young people who have met with Ministers, led high profile projects, campaigned, organised events, trained practitioners, took part in focus groups and surveys, gave interviews, and helped other young people to find their voice this year. YoungMinds will continue to give you the opportunity to share your views, shape the direction of and be an important visible and vocal part of our organisation. Our skills and experience in engaging and consulting with young people, helps organisations across the country. In 2013, YoungMinds launched YoungMinds Vs, an ambitious youth campaign building a mass movement of young people fighting the pressures that contribute to their poor mental health and putting young people themselves at the heart of decision making about their own care, their services and mental health policy. So far, 23,000 individuals and 341 organisations have shown their support and joined the campaign. After consulting with over 5,000 young people they told us that the following five issues were the ones that mattered to them most: Lack of access to help One-third of under 18s don t know where to turn to get help when they feel depressed or anxious. Sexual pressures Over half of 11 to 14 year olds had viewed online pornography with 4 out of 10 believing it has affected their relationships. School stress Bullying Half of all the children and young people polled had been bullied. Over half of the children and young people polled believe they will be a failure if they don t get good grades. Through the YM Vs project: 1000s of young people understand how to improve their mental health, take control of their emotional wellbeing and are active in their communities helping others. social actions projects have been launched with YoungMinds Vs Activists gaining local support for the campaign. 300 young people trained in campaigning, public speaking and leadership have: Influenced the local and national agenda around children and young people s mental health. Volunteered to join their local Healthwatch. Met with the Deputy Prime Minister. Submitted evidence to national government consultations including being quoted in the 2013 Chief Medical Officers Report. Held positions of authority, like being a Governor of their local trust. In the coming year, we are looking forward to supporting the ever increasing numbers of young people wanting to campaign online and in their communities for better mental health. Over Unemployment 40% of jobless young people have faced symptoms of mental illness* *Prince s Trust, ,000 passionate young Vs Activists have engaged directly with the campaign hubs in London, Leeds and Newcastle. They have hosted the campaign launches, been the public face of the campaign, formed YoungMinds Creative Advisors to plan and evaluate the campaign and taken action to #FightThePressure in a very wide range of ways including speaking at conferences; speaking in the media, event organisation, fundraising and much more
Helping young people online Launched in March 2014, HeadMeds is a unique website giving young people access to reliable information about the 21 most common mental health medications. It includes information about potential side effects and when young people should go and get help. It gives answers to some of the difficult questions they may have but might feel uncomfortable asking their GP like, Will it affect my sex life? Can I drink with this medication? Will I gain weight?. Real life stories also give reassurance during a time which is often confusing, frightening and isolating. Co-created with young people, independent pharmacologists, child psychiatrists and GPs, HeadMeds provides much needed, straight talk on mental health medication. HeadMeds has been endorsed by the Royal College of GP s and the College of Mental Health Pharmacy and was funded by Comic Relief and the Nominet Trust, as part of the Innovation Labs Project. We have had an overwhelming response from young people, who particularly like the real stories. Teachers, CAMHS workers, support workers and the general young people s workforce have also told us that HeadMeds is really valuable as an accessible learning resource, helping them to better support young people going through the experience of taking medications. Taking medication for mental health problems is not just about taking a pill: it can be an emotional and physical roller coaster too. It s so important young people feel they are not alone, that somewhere, someone else has faced a similar battle, a similar whirl of emotion. They need to be given the facts: accurately, simply and in a way that makes sense. They need somewhere to go to understand the real impact on lifestyle on the areas of life that are separate to mental health, but link so closely to it. The areas that no one talks about, but everyone knows exists. HeadMeds does that and I am really proud to have been a part of making it happen. Sarah, Young Advisor for HeadMeds HeadMeds is great as there are things you don t want to ask your pharmacist, or support worker. It s young-people friendly and the videos are great it s so good to know you aren t alone and other people are in similar situations. 21-year-old, Lincolnshire 168k 57k page views unique users We want to add more medications, more real life stories and create a training course for professionals so they can learn about how to talk to young people about mental health medications
Effecting real change YoungMinds continues to be at the forefront of informing and shaping Government policy through membership of key influencing and policy creation bodies including: The Mental Health Taskforce Same Old...the experiences of young offenders with mental health needs The Ministerial Advisory Group on the Mental Health Strategy The Children and Young People s Health Outcomes Forum Children and Young People s Mental Health Intelligence Network and the Child & Maternity Intelligence Network both hosted by Public Health England The Joint Commissioning Panel Same Old... the experiences of young offenders with mental health needs The Children and Young People s Mental Health Coalition We Need To Talk Coalition Freedom of Information (FOI) For the last four years YoungMinds has conducted a Freedom of Information request into the budgets of local Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS). This work is vital to keep up the pressure on government at both national and local levels to improve mental health services for children and young people. Research by Sarah Campbell Senior Lecturer, and Stephen Abbott, Research Fellow at The School of Health Sciences, City University London In partnership with the Transition to Adulthood Alliance Funded by The Barrow Cadbury Trust The Children s Charities Coalition for Internet Safety The T2A Alliance YoungMinds also contributes to other campaigns, policy work and guidance, responds to consultations and submits evidence to enquiries. This year that includes the enquiry into CAMHS by the Health Select Committee and the enquiry into Personal, Social and Health Education by the Education Select Committee. Funded by The Barrow Cadbury Trust, YoungMinds and the Transition to Adulthood Alliance in partnership with City University London launched an authoritative report that revealed that despite numerous reports, enquiries, policy documents, expert reference groups, working parties, consultations, white papers, Bills, Acts of Parliament and changes of government, very little has changed in the last 20 years for young people in touch with the criminal justice system with mental health needs. YoungMinds will continue to use this poignant report to influence policy and practice on this critical issue. In response to our research Norman Lamb MP, Minister for Care Services said: It s vital that children with mental health problems get support at the right time. YoungMinds is doing valuable work to highlight a crucial issue that mental health is often disadvantaged in local spending plans. We ve set out plans to improve care for young people and I would urge everyone to put pressure on local commissioners to make sure children s mental health gets its fair share. This year, our research revealed: of local councils in England have cut or frozen their CAMHS budgets since 2010/2011 of local authorities in England that supplied data have cut, frozen or increased below inflation their budgets this year (2013/2014) of NHS Clinical Commissioning Groups that supplied data had frozen or cut their CAMHS budgets between 2013/2014 and 2014/
Helping families in crisis YoungMinds helps families in crisis with honest, practical, trustworthy information available from our website, leaflets, booklets, telephone helpline and online advice. We are also working with NHS England to support the participation of parents and carers in improving mental health services for children and young people through YoungMinds Parents Say. I was at a point where I didn t know what to do anymore, I d exhausted my abilities as a mum. But the Helpline picked me up me and my family. They made me see that I wasn t going mad and that there was a way forward, we had a plan. I remember coming off the phone and thinking things would be good again and that I wasn t on my own any longer. In a recent external evaluation of the Helpline: saw positive changes as a result of our advice The award-winning Parents Helpline helped 10,161 families last year. Parents contact us because they are desperately worried about their child s behaviour, self-harming, severe anxiety, attempted suicide, eating disorders, panic attacks, phobias, abuse, depression and psychosis. would recommend us to a friend 1 in 7 parents said the Helpline was a lifesaver Parents also told us they felt less isolated, were reassured and didn t feel judged. Most said that the Parents Helpline gave them confidence to take action and gave them information they wouldn t have been able to access elsewhere. Highly trained volunteer advisors provide support, practical advice and guidance, over the telephone and online, helping parents to understand their child s behaviour and make positive changes. Families needing additional help receive support from our team of child mental health professionals through a free follow-up 50 minute telephone consultation. This is particularly welcome in a climate where it can be months before families get access to the advice of a mental health professional. The Parents Helpline is under threat of closure: Volunteer service delivery began in April 2011 This service is unique; there is no other service offering this vital support and there is no back-up. The following graphic demonstrates an ever increasing demand over the last 7 years with ever diminishing funds. 7 YoungMinds in the media YoungMinds uses the media to champion the cause of children and young people s mental health and thereby influence policymakers and funders to improve the help available. It also enables the public to understand the reality and importance of chilldren and young people s mental health, the lack of resources available and combats stigma. By generating powerful headlines and stories we put pressure on those in power to deliver change for children and young people. Here is just a small sample of some of the news stories we have contributed to this year. Self-poisoning is on the rise, according to the NHS BBC Radio 1 Newsbeat Unhappy teens need sympathetic ear Press Association Robbed of hope: Young with poor exam results fear scrap heap Metro The troubled teen epidemic Fabulous Magazine (The Sun) Children as young as five suffering from depression Daily Telegraph threat to Self-harm sites and cyberbullying: the rdian Gua children from web s dark side The Half of children and young people in YoungMinds poll of 2, to 25 year olds had been bullied and more than half said they would end up being a failure if they did not get good exam grades YoungMinds, 2014 Every day, we hear ab out the unprecedented toxic cli mate children and young pe ople face in a 24/7 online culture where they can never switch off. 8 Helping professionals achieve more for young people The impact of multi-disciplinary training YoungMinds is leading the field in training and consultancy to improve the mental health of children and young people. We help strengthen planning, clarify priorities, increase knowledge and skills and improve services. Our offer includes: comprehensive understanding of the latest research, the policy context and evidence-based best practice a range of effective tools and techniques endorsed by practitioners on the ground insights and perspectives from young people, who are experts by experience, about effective services. Commissioned training total: Over participants trained over 237 days/197 courses* Open access training: 345 participants over 30 courses* Cumbria case study In the current climate of cuts, job losses and an ever changing commissioning landscape, local area partnerships face significant difficulties in effective communication, relationship building, identification of available resources and working systemically to achieve the best outcomes for children and young people. YoungMinds were commissioned by Cumbria County Council and their partners in the local children and young people s health system to deliver a bespoke training support programme. The aim was to improve the confidence and competence of staff in working to promote children and young people s mental health and emotional wellbeing and support children and young people experiencing mental health problems. YoungMinds has risen to this challenge and is working closely with local area partnerships across the UK, providing much needed specialist training and consultancy. The programme focused on six key areas: Feedback from training participants: *Figures cited relate to 31/3/13 to 1/10/14 say it s relevant to their work would recommend to a colleague rate us as good or excellent Moving On A three year project focusing on supporting the mental health of Looked After Young People through delivering training to the professional sector, funded by Comic Relief. The 6 day programme delivered to 12 multi-disciplinary teams revealed common problems, promoted trust and relationship building and enabled ideas, tools and skill sharing. The training was very well received, one of the most beneficial aspects was the multi-agency approach and the opportunity to learn from and understand other agencies. Also having the training delivered by a well-respected and experienced organisation was important. YoungMinds worked with us to design the training course and were able to not only support us in ensuring we had the most appropriate content, but deliver the training professionally and very competently to a mixed audience. 9 Practical help for schools YoungMinds supports schools, staff and pupils in a variety of ways and this is an important and growing area of our work. Schools have a key role in developing children and young people s emotional resilience by being able to identify problems early on and enabling access to help. Research also demonstrates the strong links between emotional wellbeing and academic attainment, behaviour in school and attendance. school staff members trained over 47 days. Academic Resilience Beating the odds for better results, is an approach for schools devised by Lisa Williams and Professor Angie Hart and adopted by YoungMinds. Through BOND s commissioning support work, it was identified that schools had specific support needs around developing a whole school response to building resilience amongst pupils to improve attainment. YoungMinds website has published a new resource to address this need, Academic Resilience Beating the odds for better results. It offers free, practical resources and tools to help everyone in the school community step up and support pupils academic resilience. It also identifies where YoungMinds can offer schools additional help to make it happen. YoungMinds website section for schools received over 387k page views and over 296k unique page views. Haringey case study A whole school approach to emotional wellbeing Building on the successes of the YoungMinds in Schools project, Haringey Public Health, as part of the London Healthy Schools programme, commissioned YoungMinds to deliver bespoke training to school staff. The Haringey senior staff have adopted a whole school approach, so far enabling 127 professionals in 21 primary schools and 70 professionals in 9 secondary schools to be trained to identify and support vulnerable children and young people in building resilience. An excellent course very thought provoking, I was impressed with both the knowledge and delivery style of the trainer. Participant from a primary school Commissioning Support in the future YoungMinds has begun working with Durham, Hertfordshire, Lewisham and Bedfordshire to develop the Academic Resilience approach across the whole system, in partnership with Public Health, the Local Authority and schools as well as continuing to talk about the approach at conferences around the country.
