1 Reformed Theological Seminary-Orlando PSY592 Addictions 3 Credit Hours January 12 16, 2015 Sharon A. Hersh, M.A., LPC Course Instructor Sharon A. Hersh M.A., LPC, CLC has been a therapist for over fifteen years and continues with an active practice that has an emphasis in addiction, relationships, adolescents, and personal transformation. She is an author, speaker, teacher, and certified life coach. She is the author of several books, including The Last Addiction, the award-selling Bravehearts, and her most recent book - Begin Again, Believe Again. She has written five parenting books including the award-winning Bible Study, Mothering Without Guilt. She is a frequent speaker and teacher at universities, seminaries, conferences, and retreats. Course Description This course is designed to engage students in an examination of substance abuse and addiction and the impact on the individual as well as the dynamics of family systems. The course will include an understanding of addiction as well as an introduction to different models of counseling. Students will have an opportunity to explore specific addictions as well as develop an integrated approach to recovery that includes biological, psychological, and spiritual categories. Classes will be in seminar format and will include lectures, readings, film, and discussion. Course Objectives Through class assignments, students will demonstrate the following: 1. Understanding of the problems of substance abuse including major signs and symptoms and appropriate methods of assessment, while uncovering personal assumptions and style in treating substance abuse. 2. Knowledge of various treatment modalities and applicability to specific addictions.

Students will learn to develop an integrated model for understanding addiction, using current literature (class texts, novels and other addiction literature, current research, film) and the Scriptures (including, but not limited to Romans 1:18-25, Ephesians 4:7-17, Exodus 13f). 4. Knowledge of treatment resources in the community for clients with substance abuse problems. 5. Students are asked to prepare a class presentation with an integrated treatment plan. 3 Course Requirements Attendance is mandatory for all five class days. Your final grade will be an average of the reflection paper, class participation, and final presentation. Missing class hours may result in the loss of a letter grade in the class. Reading: In order to fully participate in class discussion, students will complete required reading by the date specified on the Syllabus. At the end of the term, students will indicate on a Required Reading and Assignments form (provided in class) that they completed the reading. Class Presentation: Students will take a Step Four Personal Inventory (will be provided in class) and present to the class on 1/16/15 their understanding of substance abuse, treatment concerns, and treatment possibilities based on their own inventory. Paper: Due: 1/16/15: One-page reflection paper addressing the evidence, energy, or experience of addiction and personal assumptions about addiction (from class discussion, 12-step meeting, and reading). Course Policies 1. Grading Policy: Class Participation 25% Reflection Paper 25% Step Four Inventory and Presentation 50% 2. Grading Scale: A B C F 75 or below 3. It is expected that written products will be legible, professional in appearance, and error free. They are to be typed and double-spaced. APA guidelines are required for all papers. 4. No late papers accepted.

Hersh, M.A., LPC Campus: Orlando, FL Date: January 12-16, 2015 MAC Student Learning Outcomes In order to measure the success of the MAC curriculum, RTS has defined the following as the intended outcomes of the student learning process. Each course contributes to these overall outcomes. This rubric shows the contribution of this course to the MAC outcomes. *As the MDiv is the core degree at RTS, the MDiv rubric will be used in this Articulation (oral & written) Scripture Reformed Theology syllabus. Broadly understands and articulates knowledge, both oral and written, of essential biblical, theological, historical, and cultural/global information, including details, concepts, and frameworks. Significant knowledge of the original meaning of Scripture. Also, the concepts for and skill to research further into the original meaning of Scripture and to apply Scripture to a variety of modern circumstances. (Includes appropriate use of original languages and hermeneutics; and integrates theological, historical, and cultural/global perspectives.) Significant knowledge of Reformed theology and practice, with emphasis on the Westminster Standards. Rubric Moderate Minimal None Moderate Moderate Mini-Justification Student will articulate, through written work and classroom presentations an integrated Biblical, historical, and cultural perspective (both personal and in this field of teaching) details, concepts and frameworks for addiction. The focus is primarily on Addictions within the United States. Student will study three specific passages of Scripture, applying these passages to an understanding of addiction, circumstances that have impacted the student s life with regard to Addictions, and to how they will impact the lives of those they care for. Sanctification Desire for Worldview Winsomely Reformed Preach Worship Demonstrates a love for the Triune God that aids the student s sanctification. Burning desire to conform all of life to the Word of God. Embraces a winsomely Reformed ethos. (Includes an appropriate ecumenical spirit with other Christians, especially Evangelicals; a concern to present the Gospel in a God-honoring manner to non-christians; and a truth-in-love attitude in disagreements.) Ability to preach and teach the meaning of Scripture to both heart and mind with clarity and enthusiasm. Knowledgeable of historic and modern Christianworship forms; and ability to construct and skill to Moderate Student will be asked to look at their personal life through the lens of Addiction in a way that offers the opportunity for further transformation and a call to sanctification. Every category of addiction and recovery from Addiction is viewed with a desire to encourage the student to conform to the Word of God and lead clients to do the same. This class uses current film and modern-day stories about those who have struggled with addiction and found redemption. For those called to preach, this course will prepare the student to address relevant issues using Scripture as the final authority for all Truth. Through several classroom experiences,

6 Shepherd Church/World lead a worship service. as well as opportunities to share with classmates on a weekly basis, the opportunities to use brokenness as a context for worship will be reinforced. Ability to shepherd the local congregation: aiding in spiritual maturity; promoting use of gifts and callings; and encouraging a concern for non-christians, both in America and worldwide. Ability to interact within a denominational context, within the broader worldwide church, and with significant public issues. Student will be able to shepherd an individual or group of individuals who have struggled with addiction to experience transformation and be able to then help others who struggle. Since Addiction affects every family in America, the material in this course will equip the student to interact on a broad basis.
