2 The Landscape 1 in 10 Minnesotans meet the criteria for substance use disorder. Only 10% of these individuals who need treatment receive it. Barriers -- Stigma, fear, inadequate health insurance, can t afford co-pays Move from acute care to disease management Treatment is only part of recovery 23.5 million Americans in recovery

4 Recovery Recovery is a process of change whereby individuals work to improve their own health & wellness and to live a meaningful life in a community of their choice while striving to reach their full potential. 5 Recovery Community Organization (RCO) Independent, grassroots, non-profit organization led and governed by the recovery community. The sole mission of an RCO is to mobilize resources within and outside the recovery community to increase the prevalence and quality of long-term recovery from alcohol and other drug addiction. Public education, advocacy and peer-based recovery support services are strategies through which this mission is achieved.

10 Why Peer Based Support Works The Helper Principle People with high vulnerability, severity, and complexity and low recovery capital don t fare well w/o sustained support Improve social supports Peer relationships are natural, reciprocal, and enduring (vs hierarchical, commercialized, transient) 92% of MRC recoverees felt more in control of their recovery as a result of peer based recovery support services (Wilder Research 2014)

14 Recovery Coach Personal guide and mentor for individuals seeking to achieve or sustain long-term recovery from addiction, regardless of pathway to recovery Connector to instrumental recovery-supportive resources, including housing, employment, and other professional and nonprofessional services Liaison to formal and informal community supports, resources, and recovery-supporting activities

15 Recovery Coach Focus with Recoveree Builds on individual s strengths and capacities Shares recovery responsibility between individual, family, and community Identifies, locates and connects recoverysupportive resources Addresses high-severity addiction and lowrecovery capital Recognizes hierarchy of needs
