Learners will also be given the opportunity to practice Urinary skills within the safety of a simulated learning environment. Unit Information It is expected that before the unit is delivered, the tutor will have read the Qualification Specification to ensure all conditions regarding Rules of Combination, delivery, assessment and internal quality assurance are fulfilled. Additional guidance is available below as Assessment Guidance for Learning Outcomes and Assessment Criteria in bold. This unit has 4 learning outcomes 1. Know the theoretical approach to Urinary 1.1. Identify the principles of care 1.2. Indicate anatomical structures in males and females relevant to Urinary 1.3. Identify the function of parts of the urinary system 1.4. Indicate the causative factors which determine the need for a urinary catheter 1.5. Identify the ethical issues surrounding Urethral of individuals 1.6. Indicate the adverse effects and complications during 1 of 5

2 2. Know how to perform Urinary 3. Be able to perform Urinary 2.1. Work as part of small group to practice male, female and suprapubic Urinary 2.2. Give support to others practicing Urinary 3.1. Communicate with the patient to: (a) obtain individual s valid consent for the procedure (b) confirm identity (c) allay anxiety 3.2. Gather the equipment and materials for the individual to meet their needs 3.3. Ensure the environment is suitable and that comfort and dignity of the patient is maintained throughout the procedure 3.4. Carry out Urinary following agreed procedures: (a) remove old catheter (b) ensure the genital area is socially clean prior to cleansing (c) check meatus for abnormalities and aseptically clean it (d) administer appropriate lubrication and anaesthetic gel (e) insert catheter safely, aseptically and correctly causing minimum discomfort to individual and record volume of urine drained (f) ensure catheter is in correct position before balloon inflation (g) inflate balloon (h) attach catheter to appropriate drainage system or catheter valve 3.5. Complete the procedure: (a) provide the individual with the necessary information and support (b) complete records accurately 2 of 5

3 4. Be able to work safely when carrying out Urinary 4.1. Check equipment and materials to ensure fit for purpose and safe to use 4.2. Follow health and safety measures relevant to procedure: (a) demonstrating knowledge of relevant protocols, procedures and guidelines (b) in accordance with company Infection Control Policy (c) washing hands (d) applying gloves and apron 4.3. Dispose of used catheter and associated materials and equipment safely Assessment Guidance Learning Outcome Parts: kidneys, ureters, bladder, urethra (male and female). Learning Outcome 2 Know how: this must take place in a supported training environment. Learning Outcome 3 Be able: Urinary must be carried out on a minimum of 10 occasions observed by a qualified supervisor. This will include a minimum of 4 within the workplace. 3.1(c) Allay anxiety: including giving relevant information, providing, addressing needs and concerns. Thank patient after the procedure. 3.4 Carry out: the procedures must be observed and carried out satisfactorily on a minimum of ten occasions. 4 Observation Performance Criteria PC1 Obtain equipment and materials for individuals that meet their needs 3.2 and the needs of local protocols and guidelines PC2 Apply standard precautions for infection prevention and control and take appropriate health and safety measures 4.1b, c, d PC3 Check equipment and materials to ensure that they are safe and fit 4.2 for purpose before usage PC4 Ensure that the environment is suitable for to take 3.3 place and that comfort and dignity are maintained during and post procedure PC5 Obtain the individual s valid consent for the procedure 3.1 PC6 Comply with the relevant protocols, procedures and guidelines 4.1a relating to Urethral, product failure, malfunction and serious harm caused by product usage PC7 Remove old catheter correctly and safely, check that the tip is intact 3.4a and observe the level of encrustation PC8 Ensure the genital area is socially clean prior to cleansing 3.4b PC9 Observe the meatus for any abnormalities and aseptically clean it for 3.4c insertion of the urethral catheter PC10 Administer the appropriate lubrication and anaesthetic gel following 3.4d manufacturer s instructions PC11 Insert the catheter safely, aseptically and correctly, according to the 3.4e manufacturer s instructions and local protocols, with minimal discomfort to the individual and record the volume of urine drained PC12 Ensure that the catheter is in the correct position using the 3.4f appropriate indicators before balloon inflation PC13 Inflate the balloon according to manufacturer s instructions 3.4g PC14 Attach the catheter correctly to the appropriate drainage system or 3.4h catheter valve and confirm that it is secure and functioning correctly PC15 Dispose of the used catheter and associated equipment and materials 4.3 safely and correctly PC16 Provide the individual and relevant others with the necessary 3.5a information and support PC17 Record clearly, accurately and correctly any relevant information in the ongoing catheter care records 3.5b Delivery Requirements Appropriate physical resources will be required in order to deliver and assess this unit.
