5 International School of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology Paolo Mascagni EXCEMED live educational course: International School of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology Paolo Mascagni Early evaluation of fetal echocardiography April Siena, Italy Aim The prenatal diagnosis of congenital heart diseases is today very important in optimizing obstetrical and neonatal care. Fetal echocardiography requires the use of high resolution ultrasound equipment, adequate transducer frequencies and specific system settings that must be changed in real time to reach the best resolution in each patient and in each condition. Thanks to the advanced technological evolution of modern ultrasound equipment an earlier echocardiography can today be performed from the early second trimester (13-16 weeks) so as to anticipate the visualisation of the major cardiac structures. The normal fetal echocardiogram is targeted to visualise: visceral situs and cardiac position; four chamber view with two separate atrio-ventricular valves; aortic and pulmonary outflow tracts; two great arteries of similar size; evidence of the ductal and aortic arches. Doppler techniques (colour and power) can be used to optimize fetal heart images. The aim of this live educational course is to give a complete understanding of the ultrasound settings needed to perform good echocardiography. The most important scanning planes of the normal fetal heart (apical four chamber view, subcostal four chamber view, long-axis aorta, long-axis pulmonary artery, short-axis ventricles, aortic arch view) will be shown and explained from a clinical and diagnostic point of view. Some important rules and practical suggestions will be discussed. 3

6 Learning objectives By attending this live educational course the participants will be able to: Recognise the correct methodology to perform a good early fetal echocardiography Apply the rules to optimise acquisition of the correct images Evaluate the role of color/power Doppler in fetal echocardiography Target audience Physicians working in the specialist field of ultrasound and obstetrics who want to improve their knowledge and techniques. Accreditation An application has been made to the EACCME for CME accreditation of the EXCEMED International School of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology "Paolo Mascagni" - Workshop on: Early evaluation of fetal echocardiography to be held on April 2015 in Siena, Italy.
