3 A look at sugar s influence on health and consumption In 2016, the Journal of the American Medical Association published an article entitled Sugar Industry and Coronary Heart Disease Research: A Historical Analysis of Internal Industry Documents. This article revealed that during the 60s, the sugar industry funded a large-scale medical review process with the intention of implicating fat and downplaying added sugar as a risk factor for coronary heart disease. 5 In 1967, this sugar industry-funded review was published in the New England Journal of Medicine, (NEJM). (Note: NEJM did not require authors to disclose all conflicts of interest until 1984). Thus began a longstanding trend where health care professionals lost interest in sugar as a clinical concern, while cutting fat out of American diets became a focus for preventing coronary heart disease. 5 With fat no longer providing the taste and texture that consumers preferred in food products, something needed to fill that void. It is probably no coincidence that data show a trend in sugar consumption that has risen steadily since 1970 levels that far exceed the evidence-based recommendations of health organizations worldwide. 4 What does the evidence say about sugar today? Today we know that consumption of added sugars is directly linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Furthermore, continuing medical research has only deepened our understanding of the link between added sugar and increased risk of chronic diseases like obesity, hypertension, and diabetes. 1 Sugar is linked to chronic health conditions 1 Obesity Hypertension Cardiovascular disease Type 2 diabetes Is there a link with cancer? Research is still seeking to understand the complex link between sugar and cancer. One thing we do know, however, is that multiple studies conclusively link obesity directly with: 7 Increased risk for at least 9 cancer types Poorer treatment response Increased cancer-related mortality U.S. guidelines recommend reductions for added sugar. The most recent Dietary Guidelines for Americans published by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) reflect this upward trend in the consumption of added sugar (see Figure 2). 2 Data within the guidelines show that the majority of men and women have an intake of sugar which far exceeds levels that are suggested to promote health, prevent chronic disease, and help people reach and maintain a healthy weight. 2 Figure 2: Added sugars intake compared with recommended limits 2 SOLA used this important information to help guide the creation of SOLA brand products.
