Seeking sugar alternatives to offer sweetness without the backlash Sugar is the current number-one food villain, and consumers also dislike artificial sweeteners. Consumers are highly aware of their sugar and artificial sweetener consumption, but it can be hard to cut down on sweet food and drinks. Why? Sugar consumption is a major concern among consumers Using natural sugars that score low or middling on the glycemic index or other natural sweeteners offers benefits for consumers who find difficult to limit sugar consumption or avoid it altogether. Using plant based options to sweeten products has the potential to provide a healthier image. So what? 4 STEVIA: NATURE S ZERO CALORIE SWEETENER It is a member of the sunflower family. Non-GMO. Discovered more than 200 years ago in Paraguay. It uses at least 92% less water than other natural sweeteners. Originally used to sweeten beverages, like tea. 4 About 3 stevia leaves to replace 25% of the sugar in one can of soda. 30% - 80% less carbon than other natural sweeteners. It uses 1/5 the land of cane sugar.
