Folate Is An Umbrella Term Folic Acid Folinic Acid 5-MTHF There are three forms of folate: Folic acid manmade synthetic form and not ideal if you have the MTHFR gene Folinic acid active form and helps with DNA/purine synthesis and is important in regenerative 5- MTHF 5-MTHF active form that s crucial for DNA/RNA, protein synthesis, fat metabolism, neurotransmitter synthesis.

4 So what might give you clues that folate is low? 1. Anyone on any of these drugs for a period of time. Drugs that affect the methylation cycle Antacids (deplete B12) Cholestyramine (deplete cobalamin and folate absorption) Colestipol (decrease cobalamin and folate absorption) Methotrexade (inhibits DHFR) Nitrous oxide (inactivates MS) High dose Niacin (depletes SAMe and limits pyridoxal kinase active B6) Theophylline (limits pyridoxal kinase = active B6) Cyclosporin A (decreases renal function and increases Hcy) Metformin (decreases cobalamin absorption) Phenytoin (folate antagonist) Oral contraceptives ( deplete folate) Antimalarials JPC-2056, Pyrimethamine, Proguanil (inhibits DHFR) Antibiotic Trimethoprim (inhibits DHFR) Ethanol (depletes folate and cobalamin) Bactrim (inhibits DHFR) Sulfasalazine (inhibits DHFR) Triamterene (inhibits DHFR) 2. Family History of any of the following: - Miscarriage - Anxiety - Depression perhaps antidepressants don t work for you? - Stroke - Heart attack - Chronic fatigue at an early age - multiple chemical sensitivities

5 3. Bloods - Is homocysteine high? - Is MCV (red blood cell marker) high? - Is RDW (red cell distribution width) > 13%? 4. Signs and symptoms - Greying Hair - Fatigue - Mouth sores - Tongue swelling - Growth problems

6 Steps to choose your folate. 1. Avoid folic acid and folic acid containing foods like: - Commercial bread flour - Packaged goods - Protein powders - Protein balls - Breakfast cereals fortified with folic acid (folate) - If any food says folate in the ingredients then it will be folic acid. 2. Folinic vs. methyl? - If you have a family history of oestrogen dominant conditions like endometriosis, fibroids, fibrocystic breasts, etc. then be cautious with methyl s. Start very slowly. - If you have MTHFS ++ then start with folinic and use cofactors for MTHFS like magnesium - If you react to typical B vitamins and feel sick and don t feel good, use 5-MTHF - If you have suffered anxiety and depression and typical antidepressants don t work then a combination of methyl/folinic may be your best option. - If you have COMT++ use folinic and low dose methyl s. Always try to work with a qualified practitioner that will assist you in this process.
