3 Introduction This resource has been produced by a senior member of the GCSE (9 1) Food Preparation and Nutrition examining team to offer teachers an insight into how the assessment objectives are applied. It has taken the two high mark questions from the sample question paper and used them to illustrate how the questions might be answered and provide some commentary on what factors contribute to overall levels. As these responses have not been through full moderation, they are banded to give an indication of the level of each response. 5 Examiner commentary All questions on the paper which have an * are extended response and have a banded mark scheme. The mark scheme is extensive, however for candidates to score high marks they do not need to cover all of the points on the mark scheme. Candidates need to be able to write a logical and clear response. This should be completed in full sentences. Where appropriate candidates should give examples to exemplify their ideas. On a question which has 12 marks candidates should spend approximately minutes. If candidates write concisely it is possible to gain marks in the higher mark band without going onto additional pages. If candidates do use additional pages they must ensure this is made clear to the examiner. This candidate clearly thought about the response they were going to give and wrote some key words they wanted to consider in the answer. Although credit is not given for this, it has clearly guided the candidate in their thought process. Most of the key words identified in the plan are used in the response. The underlining of the key words in they question has also helped the candidate to focus on what is required. This is good practice and it is often candidates who do this that score higher marks. The candidates work shown above has been awarded 10 marks out of 12. They have clearly addressed the following points from the mark scheme, and where appropriate they have linked this to examples of foods and illnesses. consuming more calories (energy) than are burnt eating excessive amounts of calorie-rich foods increase in the consumption of fatty and sugary foods inactivity - sitting for long periods of time, watching the TV and playing computer games lack of food education lack of participation in sport limited access to healthy affordable food working parents ready meals/take-aways low-income high calorie foods cheaper than healthy options CHD/heart disease Stroke High blood cholesterol levels Diabetes type 2 Breathing problems Restricts movement/difficulty doing physical activity Where appropriate they have given examples. candidate has made good use of subject specific language. How the response could be improved The candidate makes reference to saturated fats, these do contribute to obesity if eaten in excess. However all other types of fats do as well and therefore it would have been more accurate to have stated all types of fats. Towards the end of the response the candidate writes about not always knowing what is in ready meals and meals eaten out. It is not clear what the candidate is referring to here and this needs more clarity. 5

7 Examiner commentary This candidate clearly knows a variety of reasons why children can become obese. In places they have also been able to give examples of foods which are linked to obesity, however they have repeated examples e.g. examples of foods high in fats and sugars - chips, sweets, burgers and then has repeated these when talking about snacks. There are also general statements made e.g. ready meals are not as good as making your own - this depends on the ingredients or methods of cooking used and therefore lacks clarity. The candidate has however made reference to a number of points from the mark scheme including: increase in the consumption of fatty and sugary foods inactivity - sitting for long periods of time, watching the TV and playing computer games increase in the consumption of fast foods eating high calorie snacks before meals e.g. biscuits, crisps etc. working parents ready meals/take-aways CHD/heart disease Diabetes type 2 Where appropriate they have given examples. candidate has made good use of subject specific language. How the response could be improved The examples given need to be different. Each statement made needs to be fully exemplified. There is only two references made to the impact that childhood obesity could have in later life. Further examples are required. These could have been embedded in the writing of the response. 7

9 Examiner commentary This is a limited response, where the candidate has made a number of correct points however they are not discussed or linked together. eating excessive amounts of calorie-rich foods increase in the consumption of fatty and sugary foods high-energy, sugary drink restricts movement/difficulty doing physical activity There are also a number of incorrect statements made which indicates the candidates lack of understanding. For example, salt linked to obesity, referring to heart attacks and heart problems. The mark scheme makes it clear not to accept reference to heart problems as this is too vague. How the response could be improved The candidate needs to write using full sentences and giving explanations and examples for what they are saying. There is a need to be more specific and to use correct subject specific terminology. 9
